My first Merry Pinot, from what is probably my favorite vineyard in the RRV. Color was a nice medium-dark ruby. Very interesting nose that changed a lot as the wine aired: more floral and spice at first, then Burgundian and earthy, and finally a perplexing dominant marzipan element that elbowed out everything else. Weird, but interesting. The palate featured red fruits more in the raspberry/cherry range, along with a seemingly meaty impression and some pronounced olive notes on the finish. Later, that same marzipan note that came to dominate the aromatics took over the palate as well. Much leaner fruit profile in general, more reminiscent of Burgundy. I can see how maybe it wouldn't be everyone's cup of Pinot, but it seems like an excellent effort in what must have been a difficult vintage.

Two bottles brought from my personal cellar to Cuvee restaurant, enjoyed with the McMillans, Alessios and Stephen Metcalfe. Similar impression as 6/18/02, although the fruit is now more red cherry than black cherry, and there is the addition of Asian spices. The texture remains silky and the wine is truly beautiful. It was definitely a crowd pleaser!

Bright disc with medium ruby robe and red rim. The nose is clean and develops over a period of approximately one hour. At that point, there is intense vanilla, black cherry, smoke and a floral quality reminiscent of violets. The palate is medium-bodied and very silky in texture. The tannins are ample (for a Pinot) but well-integrated. The flavors are similar the nose. Medium-to-long, smooth finish. Will benefit from a year or two in the bottle, but is drinking very nicely now.

A bit overly earthy, better on day 2 oddly enough.
