  • The 2004 Ghemme, yes this is the "entry-level" wine of Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo, is simply breathtaking tonight, sweetly floral with vivid crushed black cherries, plums, lavender and rose. And while finessed, it's silky with a core of zesty, tart red fruits enlivened by saline-infused acidity all under an air of worn leather and inner earth tones. The 2004 leaves a subtle staining of silty tannins that add a grippy feel without ever getting in the way as hints of licorice and hard red candies slowly fade.

  • The '04 Cantalupo Ghemme is showing beautifully tonight, with a dark woodsy display of crushed black cherry, clove, animal musk, tobacco and dried flowers. On the palate, I found soft-silky textures with vibrant acidity adding freshness, as tart cherry, sweet herbal tones and cedar tones washed against the senses. It's tannins have taken a back seat, allowing the '04 to appear both youthfully spry yet on the verge of maturity. Red berry tones saturated the senses throughout the finish along with hints of dried apple and cinnamon.

It could use a bit more depth on the palate, but there are no complaints here, as this is in a perfect place tonight.

  • Medium bodied can be mistaken by a light barolo. Nice nose after decanting, vanilla aromas followed by leather, minerals and herbs - light touch of raisin. The palate is crisp and balanced , wood, leather with tannins deliver a medium finish. A very nice bottle of Nebbiolo.

  • On the nose, I found Strawberry, plum, undergrowth and animal muskiness. On the palate, sour wild berries were prominent, tobacco and herbs with vibrant acidity and fine tannins leading to a dry red fruit finish. I will try not to touch another bottle of at least 3 more years.

  • A 91 for overall composition but a little on the light side for me, especially considering its origin. Initially vanilla giving way to stewed bing cherries peeping through a beautiful perfumed violet cloud. Hints of lanolin and wet fur. A long, crisp, focused finish, this wine continually changed over time and really kept ones interest.
