  • Clear, bright, hay-like golden colour. Oxidation has significantly dulled the flavour of this wine, but it's still nice to drink. Marshmallow-soft mouthfeel, with flavours of mineral water, orange blossom, grapefruit and lemon cream. There's moderate crackling acidity, and the floral/citrus flavours are sweet and powerful, but it's all corrupted by a stale oxidative note. Hard to evaluate a wine like this; it's enjoyable in spite of the oxidation, but it's clearly not as its maker intended.

  • Loire Odyssey, Part I - the Non-Chenin Whites (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): Did not know quite what to make out of this wine. It obviously had some quality juice, but was just all that enjoyable, buried as it was under layers of sweet oak. It came about almost as a bit over "made". The nose showed sweet corn galore, almost corn bread-like mixed up with some popcorn scents. Hard to get past that. The palate was a bit better, but there was so much popcorny oak on the attack that it more about masks other flavours, so that I could hardly pick out the sweet lemons underneath. The finish was all toffee, caramel and more nutty popcorn. There was clearly good balance . In spite of some obvious richness, there was a backbone of zippy acidity and solid core which showed nice depth and structure. Will the oak unveil and reveal something special in the years down the road I am really not sure. At the moment, it remains a wine with good raw material, but all rather tight and buried.

  • My last two bottles of this suggested that this wine was past its prime and really needed to be consumed. “Palomino gold,” proclaims the scion; and so it is with a straw-like yellow blondness. A hint of green comes through on the edges still after all these years. The lsat two bottles of this indicated that the wine had passed its prime and expecting anything more than an old Sancerre. This bottle was a wonderful data point on bottle variation. Part of a case purchased from the producer and properly stored, this, the last bottle of the case, could not have more perfectly expressed the character of Sauvignon Blanc. Barrel fermented, the wine displays rich creamed corn, citrus, tangerine, white grapefruit, smoke and mineral . . . and this is just the nose. Deep and rich, not a thing out of place. A tad of age showing through but nothing like the past two bottles. 13% alc. With pesto covered gemelli & shrimp; an excellent pairing. Highly Recommended.

  • My next to last bottle of this and only to discover it’s a weeper! With my breathe duly held, the cork is pulled. Pale golden moon in the glass. A somewhat muted nose of mineral, smoke and lime. No boxwood and no creamed corn. An initial lemon-lime drop on the attack followed by a bit of flint that fades to some toastiness and a slight oxidation on the finish. Drinkable, but definitely on the downhill slide. 13% alc. With pan seared scallops with pesto sauce over pasta. 09.02.06.

  • Sunday, April 21, 2002 Light yellow gold color. Crisp nose of fruit, pear, boxwood. The wine has a good crispness with balanced acidity and yet a certain creaminess. Classic boxwood with a touch of toastiness from the new french oak on the finish. Not too much. Very well made. 13%. With mustard marinaded swordfish and roasted red pepper/corn relish. Both this and the Pinard Harmonie 99 with dinner. The Harmonie paired with dinner a little better, but this was the preferred wine. After Phoebe’s dance recital with Aunt B, Uncle H and Grandmother. Phoebe helped to plan the dinner.
Saturday, September 13, 2003 Light yellow gold in color. Nose of smoke, wet limestone, tropical fruits (pineapple dominates), toast. Good SB fruit - lively and crisp. Added flavors of subtle vanilla and butter. A clean, crisp finish of some length. Great mouth feel - round yet without losing its crispness. However, this is not seamless like the Generation cuvee as it has a certain amount of heat just before the finish. Barrel fermented and aged. 13% alc. With Bolognese Veal Cutlets topped with country ham and parmesan in a cream sauce. A very nice pairing.
Thursday, May 05, 2005 Of late, I’ve had a hankering for testing the sliding scale of acidity to see how acidity in wine can change and change the wine as the acidity decreases over time as it were. This seems to make for evolving, changing wines in some instances and diminished wines in other instances. About 18 months had passed since testing one of these. This seemed like a good test subject for another data point. While still a pale silver, a tinge of gold has developed; yet a slight green still presents on the rim. Limestone, smoke, toast and a faint scent of boxwood complete the bouquet. This is a beautifully balanced wine with flavors of lime, limestone, flint, smoke, and ever so slight apricot. Vanilla and creamed corn as the wine opens. Toast on the finish is apparent from the barrel fermentation this wine sees. Great mouthfeel. Subtly bespeaks this wine; nothing is overdone. 13% alc. Sure this wine appears less crisp, less acidic than it did 2 years ago. But it is every bit as balanced and beautiful. Fully mature/drink now. With bacon wrapped shrimp in redeye gravy with mushrooms and tomatoes.
Thursday, August 18, 2005 Creamed corn, flint, smoke, mineral with some anise on the finish. So much like the Generation XIX from the week before, but not quite as rich and full bodied. Yet such a wonderful wine. Holding its own but probably best to drink now. 13% alc. With basil pesto over linguine topped with proscutto wrapped scallops.
