Community Tasting Notes (5) Avg Score: 92 points

  • Listening to Morgan and Chris talk on the Bedrock podcast about the skill and care that went into blending the Ravenswood Vintner’s Blend and designate wines made me decide to open this one. It’s amazing that a wine that cost maybe $12 on release could go this long and be this good. It’s another strong point that Zinfandel can age and develop just as well as the commonly accepted “great” grapes. There’s lots of bottle age sweetness here, as well as ample red fruit. Saddle leather, heart and parched gravel notes fill out the range until a subtle hit of spice comes in at the end. Opened three hours ago it’s still going strong. Makes me wish that Joel was making a regional wine for Once & Future. I would put away cases of it.

  • I wish I could rate this one higher because all of the other bottles I purchased from the Once & Future library release have been wonderful. A score of 89 still signals a very good bottle of wine. I like tasting these older bottles of wine within minutes of pouring the first glass, this wine had some spiciness and heat on the first tasting. We continued to get that spiciness over the next hour or so, and detected a slight licorice flagrance.

  • Three words: storage, storage, and storage. This wine has so much life left in it, thanks to perfect storage, what a treat! The slightest pruning of the fruit on the nose and immediately on the palate shows its age, but cigar box, sweet jammy dark fruit, and tiny dusty tannins still give this wine life and interest. Finish lingers for a good 20 seconds, delivering more red fruits, some anise, and earth. Acid still remains, rather strong for a Zinfandel and its age, gorgeous color. A treat!

  • Leslie Fisher Hits the East Bay: 90 Ravenswood, Copain, Niepoort, etc.. (Rockridge, CA (Oakland)): Paired next to the Ravenswood 1990 Merlot (Sangiacomo Vineyard, Carneros). Showing very claret like with notes of tobacco, cedar and a little blackberry fruit. It has decent acidity hanging in there and nice chewy finish. All in all for a Sonoma County wine (probably not their best barrel selection) this is hanging in nicely and was a real treat to drink.
