Blind Syrahs at Chevalier (Chicago, IL): Served blind. Pretty tight and brooding nose. Very big and rich on the palate. Loads of black fruit and not much subtlety or complexity. Good balancing structure. In the end, pretty simple and brutish.

Beautiful inky color and glorious nose, but marred by a certain thinness in the mouth and sour quality on the finish. Not nearly as good as the bottle I had a year ago. This could be due to bottle variation, but you may want to consider drinking up.

Very gorgeous wine. Improbably dark black-ruby with no signs of age. Amazing after 13 years. Fabulously rich, expressive nose, with tar, red-purple berries, soy sauce and oriental spices. Wow, really amazingly complex. Huge on the palate, big tannins, very rich, velvety, filled with huge fruit flavors. Very, very ripe. This is a unique, extremely exotic wine from a brilliant winemaker. Took a full day to open. 5-13-16-9: 93/100.

Another Saturday at Chevalier...Mostly Blind (Chicago, IL): Double blind. Lush, fat and dense. Certainly tasty, but on the flabby side. Fun, just not my style.
