  • Coravin 8/6/15: Deep golden color; intensely aromatic nose with lemon-lime, orange and peach fruit, bursting with spritzy minerality; palate is full bodied, sweet, but it continues to have great acidity that gives it vibrancy and freshness, some fruit but it fades a bit by the midpalate; finish is medium length. Clearly well made, enjoyable now, excellent balance of density or flavor and vibrant freshness. 91-92

  • Wondeful complexity, effervescent, some petrol, flowers, fruit, low alcohol. Not as sweet as my definition of Auslese, but that was fine with me. Great value.

  • AP 3 555 058 9 03; 8 pabv. BP Wines/Rudi Wiest Wines International, San Marcos, CA. $16.50/750 ml.

[ The Herrenberg vineyard is mostly blue slate with a tad of red slate and some quartzite for good measure; it is known for its great structure, nervosity and ageworthiness. The Würzburg, the other vineyard expoloited here, is a more mixed-slate vineyard, steeper, with spicier, broader wine. Part of the historic von Schorlemer group of properties. The Serrig vineyards are the furthest upstream of all the Saar vineyards, and are perhaps the most quintessentially 'Saar-like' of all those plantations. The onset of climate change has allowed us plenty more ripeer vintages in this once-poorly-ripening region, much to our happiness. Another Serrig vineyard known previously for its Eiswein growth was the Vogelsang, owned in the 1970s by the State Domain at Trier. There are also two Serriger Schloss vineyards, often used for Sekt and late harvest wines and perhaps a few other vineyards.]

Enjoyed with Pastor Ron, preceded by an Adam Kabinett Hofberg 2009 and followed by a 2005 Auslese Auction Zilliken Rausch, Trappist ale, and a couple single malts (see the note on the Adam). We had some nice cheeses typical for these wines, including one smoked with apple wood, and some frozen chicken and artichoke sandwiches.

Cork acceptable, not decanted but tasted over 24 hours as it aired. Some spritz visible; very pale color at first taking some gold and brings on much more refractivity with air.

Honied orange and a touch of petrol, fwith a polished Saar-typical focus; ripe mango, and the beginnings of harmonious and attractive lanolin. Stone and luscious apple notes show that development is on its way, but it's not really at its peak left.

Broad and slightly thick but not fully developed, showing mint and a clean apple jelly, the grapiness has an elusive anise-tinged smoked bacon flavors. There are plenty of spicy impressions with tangerine notes and juiicy impressions that will develop as thel skin tones resolve with air. A beautifully balanced wine at this point, with harmonious but slightly punchy acid structure, perfect residual sugar, and a clean finish featuring hickory-tinged bacon fat and creamy botrytis.

Continues to be a great buy for the money. This and other releases from this era are worth watching for. Stylish, carrying a forceful impression of what a late-harvest Saar can be. Not a Ruwer, as a certain critic avers.

This wine should be enjoyable through 2027 or even further. Buy if it can be found under $25 and well-stored.

  • Lite yellow with med-lite viscosity in the glass. Terpene, honey, apple, sage and sunflower on the nose. Medium body and chewy with honey, tropical fruit, guava, pear, apple and minerals on the palate. Secondary salt water taffy. Enough backbone to support its sweetness. Medium finish. Good quality, but not complex.

  • Pale greenish-yellow color; nose has white fruits, peach, slight salinity; palate is medium bodied with good tingly acidity, some subtle white fruits that dissipate quickly, slight minerality; finish is short-medium length. This is enjoyable and has great acidity but seems too simple on both the nose and the palate. From the last time I had it, it has less concentration of fruit and not much to replace it. Drink up now, still good value and a buy at $17.50 for everyday drinking.
