  • Dinner at Hai Yen (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. Waxy and ripe, with a hyper-tropical nose that made me think gewürztraminer, but this didn't have that gross alcoholic tone. In fact, there was a nice touch of acid here. Guessed late 90s white Rhone -- though the acid didn't seem to fit the profile. Ironically, I had immediately proclaimed that this wasn't chardonnay based on that weird exotic profile.

  • another winning chardonnay from clos pegase. i was amazed to visit this vineyard for which no expense had been spared only to find milk cartons being used to protect new plants from critters. the 2003 vintage follows along in the style for which clos pegase has become known. this bottle required 15 minutes for all of its complexity to burst forth with full expression. a wonderful complex of vanilla and butterscotch with faint highlights of pineapple. although the label indicates all aging done in oak, there are some remnants of steel when the wine is fully chilled. the initial sips are gently seductive. the finish is truly hedonistic, almost producing an alternate state of consciousness. i love this wine. i must confess distress at having to wrestle with the new closure. needed to bring the toolbox in from the garage.
