Wine was magnificent for the first 10 minutes, then quickly fell apart. I've owned this since first release and it's been stored in exceptional conditions.

The 1988 Mongeard-Mugneret Grands-Echezeaux medium (-) garnet in colour with a nose of dried sweet cherries, dried thyme and roasted Chinese tea leaves. Upon pop and pour, there was an intense nose of packed wet soil composite that can be pretty dirty and muddy. This fades of over hours of decant as fruit and secondary flavours slowly take over.
The wine displays a rustic palate, rust, dried raspberries and dried cherries. Tannins have dried out a little bit, slightly powdery but its presence is still undeniable. There's a mid-palate of pronounced dried tea leaves. Pretty chalky feel on the palate. Impressive for a cool year and such age nonetheless.

Decanted 2.5 hours, elderly with a strong nose, but a muddy taste that did not improve much with aration. By the smell, it was probably spectacular 10 years ago. But served well as a purgative.
