A rich old gold colour with medium+ intensity on the nose. Positives: Heavy on the toasted oak with orange rind, lemon, banana cream pie, mandarin &cloves. Full body with good acidity and a long length. Negatives: Too much oak, slight oxidation & burnt butter lead to a bitter finish. This might have been past its optimal drinking point. Tasted: 14 Nov 12 Score: 8/10, Value: 8.5/10, Score: 16.5/20 Out of 5 stars, I rated this wine: 3

(Hamilton Russell Chardonnay) #2; (tasted blind); COLOR-medium golden; NOSE-more Old World; earthiness, clay; a little pineapple on the back-end; more Burgundian style; PALATE-sour apples; I'd be shocked if this isn't from France; definitely an Old World flavor profile; great with fish dishes; it has great acidity on the back-end; I love the way it completely coats my mouth; subtle butter & exotic hazel nut on the mid-palate; almost a fungus, mushroom flavor on the back-end; this is not fruit driven -- light butter, oak and almond / hazel nuts which is very exciting; a classic Chardonnay style that definitely tastes more expensive; also tastes like it has a little more age on it; this style appeals to my palate; I like it's complexities; good flavoring and great transitions throughout; some wet leaf and pear as well; a very good effort; I like it a lot; GV-91
(Hamilton Russell Chardonnay Estate, Hemel-en-Aarde Valley) 2007 was the first year for the Hemel-en-Aarde WO; previous vintages are labeled Walker Bay. This Chardonnay, aged for seven and a half months in one-third-new French oak, is luscious and toasty, with layered butterscotch, pear, and hazelnut aromas and flavors. Its richness is focused by acidity and a long, minerally finish that ends on an upward note. South Africa's Coastal Districts on the Rise
(Hamilton Russell Vineyards Chardonnay) Medium canary yellow color; a little oxidized, oak and vanilla nose; good tart and juicy lemon palate with acidity; medium finish 90+ pts.

Slightly past its prime, but still very enjoyable. Deep gold, honeyed but still pretty fresh

Oxidized. Probably poor storage at the retailer.

Beautiful color. Strong personality. Not so appropriate for an outside summer lunch in a hot day

Intense color and bouquet. Strong and full of "personality". Not so appropriate for a summer outside lunch.
