(13%) 95% Tempranillo, 3% Graciano, 2% Garnacha – Dark ruby in the glass with warm herbs, cherry, and black tea on the nose. Nice entry showing rich, lush black fruit and notes of sweet vanilla backed by acidity turning the mid-palate a bit tart and minerally. From there the finish shows well integrated oak and barrel spice along with warm tobacco that lingers with resiny, smooth tannins. Very restrained, understated, smooth, and enjoyable. This one has another 3-5 years in front of it.

Rioja: Senorio de P. Pecina 2003 color: scintillating, med intensity purple, trans nose: med+ intensity, cherry fruit, prince edward tobacco (on fire), palate: dry, acid med + (more than others) tannin med body med alc est 13, finish is prince edward cherry tobacco, good integretation of elements, concentration of fruit, fine tannins (refinned), more cherry ....
Terciary fruit such as mushrooms, moist prunes on the palate, a bit of bacon fat. A well balanced wine with Spanish finesse for braised meats and stews.

I absolutely loved the nose on this wine. Effusive notes of berry, leather, tobacco and the sort-of-aged-wood-that-I-can't-exactly-describe note that I find in so many aged riojas. On the palate it had a roundness and silkiness that created a medium body. Understated fruit, surprising given the vintage. Although seamlessly integrated, the acidity was a bit pronounced given the fruit. I think I was expecting riper fruit given the vintage and that may have led to some disappointment. It also might become great with a couple more years in the bottle. I'll try again with the remaining wine tomorrow night. On the second night, the acidity did remain a bit pronounced.

Smells like vanilla, nutmeg, violet blossoms, oak. Tastes like awesomeness, raspberry, tart cherry, and oaky on the finish.

Very inconsistent with same bottle opened two days earlier. Light body, medium intensity, well integrated but a slight hint of a sour finish.
