  • Note of chicken broth, herbs, and yellow fruit. Showed notably older than the 89 on the side. While there was still fair amount of acidity, the 86 was on its decline. Other tasters commented on its positive evolution in the glass but I did not have enough to follow it.

  • The 1986 Rapet is another classic from this serious Domaine. Notes of tangerine oil, confit citrus, honey, vanilla and dried flowers (seemingly showing some botrytis influence like many '86s) lead into a glossy, fully-mature Corton-Charlemagne with great dry extract, perfect balance and a precise, lingering finish. Just magical with truffle pasta. This is still a very youthful, complex wine at the peak of its powers at a time when many 1986s are beginning to slide off the far end of their plateaus.

  • Burgundy 2012 Day 2: Visit to Domaine Rapet Pere & Fils (Pernand-Vergelesses): This stunning wine was a real treat. A superb nose offered tons of umami accents, with wafts of chicken broth and cooked pears, and then lovely notes of malt honey drizzled over dried stone fruits and nutty aromas of toasted almonds and macadamias - an amazing nose, almost Tokaji-like at points. What a palate too. Absolutely delicious, with a rich, melting, honeyed attack that layered the mouth with in thick, creamy textures reminiscent of dried apricots and peaches, sultanas and the ripest red apples, all glowing with a matured honeyed sweetness, yet still supported by a lovely sense of structure and juicy acidity that pulled the wine into a long, lively, mouthwatering finish, where savoury, minerally inflections danced alongside wonderful flavours of sweet lemons and honey. A fully matured Corton-Charlemagne drinking at the peak of its powers. This was wonderful.
