  • WHOA. This bottle was absolutely singing. The cork came out in pristine condition, soaked only to the mid point with a clean intact upper portion—but it seemed wholly original, classic short barolo length with OG imprint. The wine had very little sediment and color was gorgeous--a darker ruby than I would have expected with less bricking too. Smelled like 1949 on the nose but when tasted I would have guessed late 70s because it was still so vibrant and fresh. The red fruit was totally present. (The somm wondered if it had been topped off but he also says zero signs that had happened.) Slight raisin vibe blew off after about an hour in decanter and left with a near perfect old barolo. This was a remarkable and fortunate bottle.

  • Chicago Wine Flock...Gary Opening Well Aged Barolo (Ada Street - Chicago IL): Open and decanted approx an hour before serving. Another very peculiar wine. Musty start that several people insisted was corked; but most of us didn't agree, particularly when that mustiness lessened (vs worsened). But this wine was also darkly intense for a 65 yo Barolo, completely uncharacteristic of old Nebbiolo. At first I wondered if much younger wine was added, but the age of the cork and condition of the capsule hinted that was unlikely. Group considered if this wasn't 100% Nebbiolo, which we considered reasonable. Regardless of why, this was an odd wine inconsistent with any reasonable expectation.
