La Paulée de New York - The Verticals (Eventi Hotel - New York NY): Walk around tasting, in 11/10/08 vertical. Ripe, dense and very powerful black berries and cherries with sweet spice. There is still a little pronounced new oak, but otherwise this is a ripe beauty that still needs a little time to soften. Good now, better in another five years, and probably even better yet in ten.

The Verticals Tasting at 2020 La Paulée de New York (Eventi Hotel, New York): Sappy sweet fruit and fine acidity (rather than the all too frequent mouth scrunching 2008 variety). This was astoundingly good, particularly compared to some of the other 2008 wines at this event, and today it outpaced the excellent 2010. A huge surprise and one of the best red wines poured today. Simply outstanding.

2008 red Burgundies are maturing faster than neighbouring vintages, this 2008 Domaine d’Eugenie Grands Echezeaux already has the maturity of a 2000/ 01 Burgundy but tannins require a few more years to soften. Tasted blind - Nuanced deep earth and mixed berries, earthy minerality, slightly rustic. Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru? 2008? (88/100)

Seductive nose of cherry, spiced plum, freshly grated ginger and sandalwood. It has exquisite balance and poise and is so lacy against the gums. It is perfectly ripe and shows excellent transparancy. It has great drive and really fans out on the finish. Superb young Burgundy.

Less nuance and aromatic than Engel alongside. New oak became more apparent with time in glass with vanilla and caramel smells.
