Hartford zins, with a few years age, are usually just lovely. This one is no different. A little lighter than some of the others I've had this year, it still has a delicious nose of red fruits, with oodles of sweet raspberry on the palate. Drinking nicely.

This was, as we always feel, a Zinfandel in the Turley mode. Very sweet spice nose of clove, etc. Pretty highly extracted and lush on the mouth. Don't feel the alcohol to much, but I don't think these wines will age well. It's our intent to finish the 00s and 01's in the next year or so, just as with the Turleys.

This was the second Hartford of the night, as it followed the ‘00 Hartford Vineyard. What a contrast. Where the '00 Hartford Hartford (HH) is ripe and thick, the '01 Fanucchi is lighter in color and more of what a traditional Zin might be, even at 16.1% (and there is no heat in this, I might add--the alcohol is well integrated). As opposed to the '00 HH, this one shows some of the RRV Zin bouquet of berry pie but more red fruited in nature. When the wine hits the palate, as opposed to the blackberries of the '00 HH, this Fanucchi is all about black raspberries and anise/black licorice, along with spice. In the structure of the wine, there is more acids, more backbone and as opposed to the other Hartford, this one is of medium body. You can feel the youth of the wine and how tightly knit it still is. What is so redeeming about the wine is that it's classic and pure RRV Zin. Fortunately, there is still a glass left, which will go down easy tomorrow.

Black ruby for a zin. Raspberry liquer. Strong bouquet. Can't shake a stick. Great label. Almost communist. Damn, hmm.
