1983 Red Burgundy Flight (Hillside Supper Club, San Francisco): Light red with brown tones. Funky nose. Burly, strapping wine that is all earth and acidity with very little remaining fruit. Still alive but pretty rough going. More than any of the other wines, it brought back memories of the mousy taint that plagued so many wines from this vintage.

The aroma is a pile of autumnal leaves that has just been set alight, a wisp of smoke envelops one’s nostrils. It also smells of moss on a cool rock, cardamom, aniseed and something sweet and vinous. In the mouth it is clean fresh and alive with a streak of electric acidity flashing across the palate. There are black cherry flavours that intensify and congregate at the wines heart and the tertiary elements that are just sneaking in counterbalance the flesh. It has great poise and proportion and finishes a little chewy.
