  • Nose of dark fruited, maturing red burgundy; soft and rich with resolved tannins and balanced acidity; richness of fruit, great balance. Very appealing licorice finish. This is in a great place of secondary maturity with loads of life yet. Another ‘90 with ample ripeness yet not overwrought with it.

  • From my dad's cellar. popped, decanted and poured right at the table. The nose on this is great right from the start with tomato, meat, savory, with red sour fruits and dark fruits - cherry and cranberry and blackberry. Wild with some sauvage elements. Serious umami. The palate is very sour - tomato and savory some sauvage and meat. sour cherry with smoke at the end. While the nose was very perfumed with those flavors, the palate ended up a little tart and harsh - it is possible that this was just a tiny bit corked - I thought I got some hints at points but very slight. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 16.5/20.

  • Ghost of Clos Vougeot: This is much more vibrant and lively than the ‘91 and has more energetic Bright berry fruit on the nose in addition to the great terroir influence. Highly expressive, layered and nuanced. On the palate this is in a great stage of development with secondary and earthy red berry fruit, great balance and structure, and a super flavorful and long finish. Quite clearly the wine of the night. Bottles directly from the domaine.

  • 1990 Haegelen Jayer Clos Vougeot
This is why we buy Burgundy. Poured a glass upon opening and let the bottle be while I prepared dinner. It was much more in sync after an hour, which is when I wrote this note:
Wafting complex aroma of dried dark berries, iron, earth and a touch of mace with a sweet floral perfume haunting the edges of perception. Deep, rich, velvetty iron infused dark berry flavors with an earthiness on the mid palate and semi tart red currant, with its brambles, and cranberries joining on the rear. The finish shows darker fruits again and is very long with blackberry-mineral-violet-mace all revolving over the palate. Tannins show at the end giving a bit of an edginess, but smooth out completely with another 30 - 45 minutes time. Very complex, masculine style Burg that defines delicious while never veering towards yumminess.
