  • Brought this bottle to Maialino, and I should have brought it to the restaurant early in the day to have them stand it up. Biggest problem at first was the sediment. I asked our waitress to strain the bottle into a decanter, and that solved the problem. The nose had some oxidative qualities at first that turned sweet and fragrant. On the palate were sweet raspberries and florals with leather and dried cranberries on the deliciously long finish. It was very much alive with no deterioration as it sat in the decanter for the duration of our dinner.

  • Ravishing aromatics that I associate with Cappellano. A wine of great style at a fair price, well-crafted in the traditional vein. A bit lighter and higher toned than some of the other rounder offerings this evening. This went well with our Piemontese dishes served tonight. Revisited later in the evening, increasing complexity with air time.

  • beautiful example, quite tradiitional, ready, neither young nor past its prime, enough tannin to last another 5-10 years? Much more delicate than I would have guessed. Truly a divine experience, and quite a value.

  • Coloring is showing a bit of bricking. Really nice aromas of orange peel, dried cherries and anise are a good sign to start. The initial flavor is all dark cherry and dried mint then there is a huge rush of acidity that just swamps all else. The mid-palate is pretty thin but the cherry/menthol returns with a slight bit of very fined grain tannins for a lengthy finish. It takes a good 6 hours for this wine to balance and fill out. The aroma and flavors get ramped up more, the acidity seems more tame, and the mid-palate fills out. Very enjoyable, well priced barolo, that has lots of life in it.

  • Sampling 2004 Barolo, Part 1: A disappointment after an excellent bottle last month. This showed funky, soft powdery red fruits, some old wood and spice, but also a little weird aromatically. Some complained about VA; I thought it was perhaps lifted but within reasonable limits. Palate is rather dilute and imprecise, with watery red fruits and some fuzzy tannin. Held okay overnight with at best marginal improvement.
