  • Sublime, fin, tannins soyeux.

  • Deep dark blackberry jam colour - more common in a Chilean Pinot than, say, a villages Burgundy. Unusually rich, chocolatey nose, with secondary aromas of toffee and cream. On the palate, sumptuous, luscious and dense, with dominant notes of figs, dates, prunes and ripe blackberries, and an overwhelming chocolate truffle sensation. There is more fruit and sweetness than minerality or acidity. This slight lack of balance is not a defect in my view - there's enough concentration and chewiness here to give huge amounts of pleasure. Just a little more complexity and length, and a touch more acidity to counter the sweetness, and this wine would be in the mid-90s "greatness" zone. It's the first Pinot I've ever had that I could have mistaken for a tempranillo from Ribera del Duero or Toro. Either way, there's no doubt in my mind that Chile has the potential to make outstanding Pinot Noir, alongside Burgundy, Marlborough and Oregon. It will be interesting to see how this ages, but I suspect the relatively low acidity will limit its potential.

  • I first tasted Villard's Pinot in London in '99, the '96 vintage on release, and back then it was the most promising of all Chilean pinots in my book. 12 years later I got my hands on their premium cuvée from '08 and a chance to see how things have evolved.

Concentrated scarlet red, garnet hue, good extraction towards rim. The nose is open and immediate, asking no favours, a broadside of that wonderful almost artificial aroma of burnt rubber, with freshly crushed wild raspberry underneath. Straight from the forest. The palate is round, medium bodied, a perfect pitch between inviting fruit and more serious, savoury tones. Long, velvety finish, excellent acidity. On song. Drink now - 2015.

The estate has, in my opinion, kept to their philosophy to produce more delicate pinots. More Cote-de-Beaune than Yarra Valley, if the metaphor is allowed.
