Community Tasting Notes (15) Median Score: 90 points

  • In my 4/20/2021 tasting note on this wine, I had thought that was my last bottle, but I just found another in the buried part of my cellar where I intentionally stash a few bottles with the intent of forgetting about them and not drinking them for a long time. Now way past the CellarTracker date of 2001, I figured that I had better drink it. And after a long hard day in the lab where I work (insulting George Washington and all subsequent presidents), I figured that I deserved something special this evening. The fill was about 1 inch below the cork. The cork came out in three pieces, but was not soaked all the way to the top. The wine was still bright red with no sign of browning. Still loaded with strawberry and a little sweetness, without which I would have bumped up the score a little higher. I note that without one earlier negative reviewer who gave this wine a 65, the average would be well above 90. A real pleasure to drink a mature, mellow wine with no serious flaws after 38 years. If you have this gem, I suggest drinking it soon.

  • Fill and color good. Opened an hour or so before drinking.
Nice red fruit (strawberry, raspberry, slight cherry), spice, nice floral, slight earth. Good acidity. Really enjoyable

  • Yikes! According to the Cellar Tracker drink window, this wine was 10 years overdue. I found a lone bottle while rummaging through my cellar (passively cooled, 58 F in winter, 68 F in summer, with slow change), and figured that I had better drink it as opposed to serving it to guests. It was clearly on old, somewhat "tired" wine, but nonetheless a real pleasure to drink. Reddish in color with very little brown. A tad sweet, but very fruity and estery, with lots of strawberry. No tannins whatsoever. Surprisingly tasty and rich for such an old geezer of a wine. I vaguely remember the other members of the case being pretty good as well when they were younger.

  • Southern Rhone WIMPS (The Ledbury, London): Magnum. Quick sip. Mellow and mature nose, somewhat farmyardy. All together on the palate, mature, interesting but nothing profound. Very pleasant. ***1/2

  • Definitive Rhone (Fabi and Rosi European Kitchen Austin, Texas): This wine had aged gracefully, and most tasters enjoyed it. It had a pretty nose, good acidity, a nice mid-palate, good ripeness, and resolved tannins. Rustic, but with pretty notes of baked red fruit, tart raspberry, cedar box, stewed tomato, rosemary, clove, and stewed blackberry with plum and strawberry overtones. Some tasters had difficulty finding the fruit and thought it tired and musty, while others found the wine surprisingly lively, a quarter century old and still kicking.
