  • Strong on acid and tannins to begin with. Opened up after an hour with more fruit presence. Absolutely great shape given its age. Perfectly balanced with Peking Duck.

  • Opened an hour prior, followed over 2 hours. Medium garnet, some bricking at rim. Compote nose with sandalwood and cedar notes. Brisk attack, complex mid-palate of crushed raspberries and cedar. Medium to full bodied. Acidity nicely balanced and gives good lift towards the long, harmonious final.

This was my 3rd and final bottle of these and the best by a good measure. Seems to have needed the full measure of time to knit itself together.

  • Half-bottle purchased off the wine list at Tour d'Argent 4/16/14 after discussion with the sommelier. Still dark ruby color. Nose notable for rocky, earthy scents later joined by notes of blackberry, raspberry, violets, and acacia. On the palate, still surprisingly tight for about half the meal, but waking up to reveal iron, stone, tons of masculine black fruit, and anise. A featheriness and elegance began to apply, particularly on the finish. Tannins powerful but ultimately filed-off and buried by strong black fruit, with acidity quite enough to add freshness and vivacity. Longer finish of iron, black raspberry, grip and stones. A great example of an excellent NSG premier just waking up, and quite delicious with the meal.

  • Double decanted back into bottle and slow O'd 2 hours. Served at 12C. Pale with bricking at rim. Heady bouquet of licorice, plum, kirsch and some alcohol. On the palate this was a bit more together than my first bottle, consumed 3 years ago. Whereas my earlier bottle of this came across as a bit prickly, with a stewed plum character this seemed more homogenous. It is still a bit of a bruiser, with a decidedly muddled character as it warms in the glass, but when cooler this gave a good deal more pleasure tonight....full on burgundy with a high toned cherry character, mostly soft tannins with a bit of dryness on the final, and a long final. This is not subtle or elegant, and was a striking difference to a '99 Chambolle Musigny from Ghislaine Barthod that served as a counterpoint. I have only one more bottle of this and want to give it at least another 5 years before trying it.

  • Decanted 3 hours served at 14C. Somewhat limpid with pale garnet and some bricking at rim. Notes of alcohol, red fruite compote, tar and licorice on the bouquet. Attack marked by acidity and fine tannins and a relatively strong, somewhat bitter tar component. This builds to red fruit in the mid-palate although accompanied by some heat and bitterness. The finish is of moderate length with persistent bitterness and heat. Overall this is decent but a bit of a disappointment. 50+4+12+15+7=88.
