  • Dark fruit (cherry, blueberry), spice, tobacco, slight soy?/ off taste, good acidity. Lingering finish. Enjoyable.

  • Slightly off smell at first thought it might be corked.
After a couple hours air nice red fruit (cherry), slight tobacco, nice acidity. Lingering finish. Seem to be some residual tannins.

  • In fact, we shouldnt call this wine a Brunello. Altero is made since the early eighties as an alternative for brunello. 2 years on wood and so outside the Brunello laws. Since 2000, when brunello laws were changed, this wine is called Brunello Altero. It's the same wine though.

This evening the 1990 with a nice tournedos. And again... 1990 proves to be a big vintage for Sangiovese. Earlier this week I had the Fontalloro, a great wine indeed, but this one is slightly better and has a longer life ahead. More fruit left and acidity to back it up for years.

The color is the color of blood in the middle turning slightly brown at the edge.

It has a powerful, distinguished nose of cherry's, berry's tobacco, leather, raspberries, iron and hay.

In the mouth there's immediately that Sangiovese fresh acidity of berry's. lot's of fruit. blood, forestfruits, cranberry even. licorice... great scala off flavours. tannins have completely smotthened out so no harsh finish. a bit alocoholic finish.. warm...

in short: a smooth powerful wine... and no.. that is not a contradiction.

A wine that makes an evening....

I really thinking of increasing my 1990 section in my cellar...

ciao! oh by the way... this wine is worth every:
