  • PnP. Cloudy ruby w/ brick edge in color. Muted nose of morello cherry, tanned leather, aged tobacco and wood spice. A subtle gorgonzola note (blue cheese) popped after ~1 hour of air. On the palate: morello cherry, tanned leather, red delicious apple and sweet earth. Creamy tannins perceived on gums and cheeks. Long finish of red berries, sour cherries & wood spice.

  • I normally say nothing when I do not like a wine. The Altero is known to be a modern style Brunello. Poggio Antico makes "two parallel Brunello styles – the more traditional, larger-barrel Brunello, aged longer in Slavonian oak and the modern, finesse-driven Altero, aged in tonneaux of French oak." This wine had a strong (to me offensixe) smell of old wine barrel that covered all else. It reminded me of older Italian wines aged too long in old, large Slavonian oak or even old chestnut botti. I like to sniff an empty wine glass as one gets often a clear experience of the bouquet. The empty glass actually had classic Brunello finesse. The wine in the glass had old barrel smell. Quite glad it was the only bottle.

  • Brilliant but pale ruby red with medium minus optical density and very high reflectivity. The nose is intense, with classic notes of cherry, tar, roasted aromatic florals, menthol-infused forest, and some underlying balsamic and green olive. The palate shows medium body, very refreshing acidity, and a lively and juicy yet dry texture that is polished and elegant all the way. Tannins are firm, but integrated very nicely. Broad array of flavours on the attack, with balsamic-infused tart cherry, crunchy tobacco, and red forest berries. The midpalate is rich, with an elegance that really makes things shine in layers spread across, showing a lot of depth (laterally), but with a balance of intensity that focuses the flavours nicely. Nothing gets lost here, with complexity and elegance. Flavours at midpalate of aromatic mixed berries and spicy potpourri that provides a lift of savory meatiness under the flavours from the attack that also spread out. Almost perfect balance at this point. The finish has excellent length, and shows smoke and fruit peels. Overall, really nice depth that is elegant and broadcast across the palate rather than just stacked intensity- this is a very nicely done example of BdM that remains classy, elegant, old world all the way.

Really focused and hugely enjoyable wine here. Eschews power in search of harmony and expressiveness. Drinking really nicely at the moment, and should have many years left to develop. The highly perfumed nose and elegantly dense palate are a style that really appeals to me. Really tough to do better at this price point! Well-made, delicious, thoughtful- just Excellent!
