  • A little disappointing. Decanted for two hours. Nose was great. Truffles black fruit mint, alcohol. Very primary On the palette, just way too much alcohol. Fruit was stewed, and no depth. Was hoping the truffles might be brett, but no. Medium acidity and some tannins still present. Mid pallette weight was still solid. With high expectations comes disappointment.

  • This wine just seems to be getting better and better over the past year. Decanted this for 1 hour and drank over the next 2. The nose after 3 hours of air was filled with blueberry pie, chocolate, sage, and a touch of vanilla. This pours a very dark red to almost black - big legs in the glass. The palate is very rich, full bodied, tannins are still quite strong and present, but have mellowed out a bit from the last time I tried this. They are not so much in your face - but they are very velvety and easy drinking. The finish is long - at least 20 seconds. This is a delicious wine, a bit one dimensional in that it overpowers your palate a bit with the big fruit, but it is not over the top. I really enjoyed this wine, Melka and his team did a fantastic job. It is big, powerful, smooth, and well made. Perfect for Thanksgiving leftovers.

  • This is my second time around having this bottle and it is better then I remember. I highly recommend decanting this and filtering it because there was a decent amount of sediment present.

The nose is expressive - ripe currant, blackberries, chocolate, wet gravel, and some hints of licorice. The palate is medium bodied, rich, and with a velvet like smoothness. The tannins are perfectly integrated and are soft and smooth. The finish is long with hints of refreshing red fruit on the tail end. This is overall a very well made Bordeaux style wine. It hits all the necessary points - big, bold, elegant, and just delicious. In a really good spot right now - cant see this improving much more. Will likely stay at peak for the next 3-5 years.

  • Melka Estates Tasting (Napa Grill, Zurich): Big Melka Estates tasting with various wines produced by Philippe and Cherie Melka, both present at the event, including the largest Jumping Goat vertical to date. Selected notes of the winemaker comments included in the tasting story. All wines we tasted showed a European inspired handwriting (Graves, Rhone valley) especially for older vintages with later vintages (2012- 2014) coming across quite heavy on the extraction. But with most scores in the 91-94 range (few exceptions included Jumping Goat 2005 and Martinez 2015, the first vintage for the latter), the line-up struggled to meet my high expectations.

    Tasting note:
A bit more intense fruit, elegant and sexy. Sweek oak and cool wet rock minerality. Shows great and drinks very well.

  • During a vertical tasting, flight one 07-09. well managed Napa CabSav. Richer than the Mekerea but still good balance. Notes of dark fruit, spices. The 05 and 11 had the edge with their composed balance. The 07 was dead with alcoholic, oxidative notes.
