A birthday at Bouchon Racine, London (Bouchon Racine, London): Impressive and such a great surprise and albeit usually we are not impressed by their wines ( Is their Clos des Epenaux the perennial wine of disappointment or is it just our luck) this worked beautifully. The 2009 ripeness with the relative shyness and austerity of Volnay produced something pretty. Earthy, well evolved, harmonious and just worked so well. Easy 92 and we would not risk ageing this a lot.

Still young, but drinking well. Good fruit and acidity present. Long life ahead. May be worth a point or two more when tannin is fully resolved. Still better to drink the wine on the way up than on the way down. Lingering finish.

Opened with excitement after almost 10 quiet years in a good cellar, to be met with quite a surprisingly subdued nose, even after a good swirl in a burgundy glass. On the palate, more Pommard power than Volnay elegance, and opening ever so slowly over an hour or more. Enjoyable of course given the pedigree, but like a few others suggested before me, lacking in visceral excitement and not rushing for the next glass. A day later, and it was flatlining. Maybe a bottle 'singularity', and will try again in a year or so.

Dark fruits in the nose. The palate is a bit spritzy. The acid pokes through too. Hmmm.
