From a half bottle of a full case bought a Sotheby’s, this must have been stored in a perfect, very cool cellar (refer to my tasting note on the 1987 Mount Eden Cabernet bought at the same auction in a case from the same cellar, which, was also incredibly young). Much less evolved than previous bottles, this still kind of feels like an infant. Intense minerality, olives, dark brooding fruit and some dried meat with a palate that shows potential but isn’t as charming as previous bottles from other sources. Needed lots of air to open up. Shows promise for the future.

We bought this bottle due to the high rating of CT user G_H (see comment below) and it did not disappoint. The highlights are the impressive complexity and marvellous concentration without being too heavy. The reason it didn’t get a higher rating: I found the aromatic balance, the profile not overly appealing. A bit too much on the meaty/earthy side with not enough fruit and sweetness to balance it out.
TN: Black chocolate, beef jerky, cured mead, dry herbs, dark fruits on the nose. Intense, well delineated and intellectually appealing. The same aromas with more beef-derived aromas, lots of dark fruit, dark chocolate, black olives, tobacco, dark wet soil, green bell pepper and herbs on the palate. Again good intensity and precision but overall a bit challenging to fully enjoy with so much meaty notes and dried herbs. Only with time it got a bit sweeter. Otherwise, the structure was very good with fine tannins and a good acidity. Good length.
Decanting: No decant. Good from the start, didn’t move much while sitting in a decanter during our 2 hour dinner but still, the last glass was the best as more sweet tones appeared. Probably a 3-4 hour decant will do good things (but it depends on the bottle condition).

Black fruit, blueberry pie, cedar, all-spice, pepper, cinnamon, leather, and earthy notes. Beautiful complexity, and a strong finish. A

Tasted blind and it blew all of us away!
Warm nose, velvety, harmonious, some fruit, some herbs, minerals, licorice, very very long and intense. Wow, what a surprise.

Best during the first 60 minutes. Should probably be consumed by 2017.
