An unfiltered Riesling fermented with natural yeasts, aged in wooden barrels.
Slightly watery pale hay yellow color. Oak is evident in the slightly fuggy nose: it lacks the usual Riesling brightness. However, underneath the wood emerge aromas of citrus, pineapple, stony minerality and a touch of vanilla. Though the oak seemed overwhelming at first, it is actually quite balanced once the nose gets used to it. The oak is quite evident on the palate, with the 7 g/l RS only giving it more presence. Peppery spiciness, honey and minerality in the midpalate; the wine turns out to be more structure-and-mineral-oriented than overtly oaky or fruity. Quite some much acidity, but still the wine could use some more due to the rather overpowering oak. Spicy and somewhat creamy aftertaste with more underlined peppery spiciness.
Quite unique and complex Riesling, which is surprisingly light and lively despite its noticeable oak aromatics. The wood is there, but it does not dominate, only complement. Very tasteful and enjoyable, though most likely not for the most extremist Riesling purists; instead a must-try for those who are looking for something new. Worth its price of 26€.

A private dinner (Restaurant Karel V, Utrecht, Netherlands): Rich but elegant, good weight of fruit, light but bright acidity, spicy and earthy, excellent Pfalz typicity, lovely intensity and length.

Weingut Von Winning - "The Wines from Pfalz" (Scandic KNA Oslo): Quite golden. Pineapple on the nose, quite bitter and sharp, yet a bit shut down. Warm, intense and spicy on the palate. Good lenght.
