  • Back to La Luna finally. With the 9 other wine group boys and one missed absentee due to 25km rules.. 20 bottles consumed. Herewith are my top 6 on the night. However apart from a 95 Giaconda Chardonnay to drink alongside this 94 but was a bad bottle and a corked 1990 Pibarnon Bandol, all the wines were exceptional and deserved of a write up but I will only do these 6. 94 Giaconda Chardonnay ( 97 pts) , 1995 Giaconda Pinot (95 pts), 1993 Bannockburn Pinot ( 97 pts), 1982 Gruaud Larose (94 pts) , 1990 Wendouree Cabernet Malbec ( 96 pts) and 1999 Greenock Creek RR Cabernet ( 95 pts). So onto the Giaconda Chardonnay. and WOW WOW WOW. Along with Gregs 1993 Bannockburn Pinot my 2 WOTN's. Unfortunate the 95 Chard alongside didnt want to party but this bottle was in pristine condition and the colour totally bedazzled most of us with its youth. ( the dodgy 1995 was replaced with 2008 Giaconda Chardonnay ( 95 pts and superb but way too young).
If ever there was proof of Giaconda being the best in Australia and one of the longest living Chardonnays alongside Leeuwin, then this bottle was it. the Nose had a lovely ripe fruited caramel woodyness and palate was long fat rich and oily with Ripe Pear, Honey soaked walnuts and superb 50:50 tannin and acid balance and not one iota of oxidation. Extremely long in the mouth and simply a real treat. Alas my only bottle. i discussed it with Two Shoes and he and I both agreed that it would easily beat the pristine 96 version , which has historically been a favorite. Mr Kinzbrunner you have done it again. And for the readers can I finish with .......ETHEREAL

  • This was a scintillating bottle. There's plenty of struck match to the aroma along with notes of fig, cashew, white peach and nougat. In the mouth it is layered like a great Montrachet. There's plenty of dense orchard fruits, some butterscotch and citrus and minerals. It still has good tension and energy although acidity is softening and length of flavour is superb.
