I don't think there has yet been a thread for news on recently consumed wine.
I know we all talk about them, but they seem to be mixed up with other threads e.g. -
Best New World Reds
Most Collectable Wine
Thought this might be a good place to highlight topical great successes and great failures (both vital info.).
Obviously the TN section will contain all the formal notes, but this place seems good to get a dialogue going (most of the time of the civilised variety).
Let's see.

And a surprise Voyager 1999 Cab/Merlot - somehow think I missed the goodness in this by popping and pouring.

I opened this up and gave it a go as a benchmark as I have/had 6.  I found it to be superb!

I'd hoped that this thread would end up with a catalogue of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of the wine world.
It appears that the Average is more likely to get a shout.
So here goes - continuing my tasting of d'Arenberg wines:
Stump Jump CS , The Custodian Grenache , The Laughing Magpie ,
And tonight I hit average (well almost) -
The Footbolt Shiraz .
I'd try it again, well I have to I bought three bottles.
Have I proved that the more you pay the better the wine?
I still have Coppermine Road and Dead Arm (cellared) to go, ever hopeful.

I've just poured myself a glass of the non-vintage Alfred Gratien. Deliciously ripe and toasty. It will accompany Tavernier's 'The Watchmaker of St. Paul' on dvd.

Happy drinking!

p.s. can remember consuming tonnes of D'Arenberg's Footbolt Old Vine Shiraz and Lehmann's Barossa Shiraz a few years ago. Ah memories....

2002 Reignac - Surprising good for the producer and the vintage
2003 Bodegas Castano Monastrell Yecla Hecula - One of the greatest bargains out there.  I might have to find more of it.

2001 Hastae Barbera d'Asti Quorum

Enjoyed with some decent chicken parm in a local restaurant after a long day of putting in a koi pond with my son. Really the perfect day from my perspective. Hard but enjoyable work followed by the reward of good food and drink. The wine is beautiful and tastes as good as the aroma's suggest it will. Just enough berries, hint of vanilla, and a nice reminder of the drinkable earthiness of Italian wines. Seems to be in it's prime but I'll wait a bit before delving into the next bottle -- or I'll do my best to try.

CL,
I had the 2005 Dead Arm at a recent Wine Tasting festival. I don't think you will be dissapointed. I bought three bottles, $ 46/each.

I have had most vintages of the Dead Arm in recent years, and found most of them to be really good. About to pop my last remaining 2001. Colonel - if you have a few bottles of the 2005, I would suggest opening one now, the Dead Arms generally drink really well in their youth.

2005 Greg Norman California Estates Petite Sirah

Had at a local restaurant known for its ambience rather than its quality or value and the wine was the perfect complement at $45. Would have been much more enjoyable at retail or a reasonable mark-up. If one could get past that aspect, the mildness of the bottle (berries, slight oak, vanilla, virtually no tannin) went well with the varied entrees of tuna, eggplant, and beef. Strikes me as a good mid-week, burger on the grill bottle.

Yes sitting on 20 of the 2005 and a dozen of the 2004.
Waitrose, a supermarket (on line), had just 8 bottles, which I bought, and then they found another full case.
So it's ideal from my perspective to crack one (or more) open.
Maybe for the CT London Rally (if it actually happens).

I'm out of my 2004s! Those are absolutely lovely. Very different from the 2005s, which seem to have more structure and focus, but the 2004s are just absolutely hedonistic and drank so beautifully in their youth that I finished every single one early. http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=246254 The 2004 is the only Dead Arm that showed rather feminine, with some mint and floral scents - almost Cote Rotie like in that apect (which you will not see on my notes). Hard to choose between the two which is the better wine, my head says the 2005, my heart says the 2004. Haha, if you are planning to crack open a 2005, you might as well do a 2004 as well!

The thing I really liked about the Dead Arms is that they are not your run-of-the-mill hit-you-on-the-head-with-big-alcohol-and-jammy-fruits South Aussie Shirazes. The 2004 is certainly more in your face than the 2005, but it never gets to the overblown stage.

Had this last week (before disappearing offline for some days, lots of traffic here on CT forums!) http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=414460 . Really good wine that is alas made no more.  There appears to be some still available, although I had to order it through Sweden!

'04 BDX...
I haven't had a single bottle. Our local COSTCO was selling 1st growth (4 out of 5, No Marguax) at $169 a bottle, I got a few cases, threw them in the outside storage and don't have a single bottle at home

2004 is probably the last year of decently priced Bordeaux - pity too. I like the classic structure, with the high acid, decent fruit and good typicity. While this has never been a bad vintage, I think this will come really good with time, something like the 1995 vintage. Some of the wines I had were already showing well - last few were the Malescot, Montrose and Lascombes. All very nice.

I too haven't touched 2004, so good to hear +ves about your three Paul, I've also got those stashed away.
Does anyone know whether Parker score Lascombes for 2004?
I assume he must have, but I have what looks like a full list of his 2004 scores and it's missing?
Cheers,
L.

PS  Wish I was near a Costco!
