Great wine, but it was on the decline at time of drinking. A weightless package of beautiful red fruits layered on a forest floor of thinly knit tannins.
The undergrowth has started to overrun the fruits, and muddle their clarity, which was unfortunate. Nevertheless, a beautiful and enjoyable wine.

Lovely showing. In a nice spot, with fruit, sous bois, soil all in balance. Don’t think there’s any point in waiting longer on these. A touch rustic at first but blows off. I think best of the ‘98 Chevillons though Cailles has more fruit at this stage.

This one showed a bit richer that the last bottle which while good, took a while to open up. Showing plums and black earth and a length in the finish. Maybe due to using the Riedel Burg Grand Cru stem? Don't know but this bottle definitely showed better tonight. I still think this is a drink now wine, and it remains a good showing in a difficult vintage, not to the best of Chevillon standards since those are high.

Light/medium ruby color. Nose was faded red fruits, burnt sugar, spice, cinnamon. Medium weight and texture, a bit rustic at this stage. Medium finish. An interesting wine to drink, good but not great (IMO). I think the wine may move to a tertiary phase in the coming years, would drink up

Lost Friday afternoon gathering – 08 Cristal and Dom, Raveneau, Rayas, Chevillon, Gouges and etc. (Black Salt, Washington DC): Beautifully mature nose displaying sweet red fruit, a hint of sous bois, sautéed cep, sweet spices and earth. Fully integrated palate, nicely layered sweet red fruit, silky and polished, good acidity and mineral, and a long sweet red fruit driven finish with noticeable sous bois at the end. Drinking beautifully.
P.S. The CT ratings are mostly in the high 80s. I am not sure how to reconcile the difference as we all loved the bottle.

Dinner organized by Mark T - Generous group of wine enthusiasts, BYO evening, outstanding chef's tasting meal (Vic's Restaurant - New York City): This one brought by Jeff, nice to compare the 1998 vintages, drank next to/after the Meo Camuzet Clos Veugot. Had been open, slow oxed for an hour+ before drinking
