Tasted by steveiiiiii on 3/9/2024 & rated 94 points: What a sweet spot this wine is in. I'm usually a fan of decanting even older wines but this was a pnp. Brett can throw me off but here it plays with the fruit which are on the black spectrum, also herbs, smoke and leather. Velvety tannins. Deserves grilled meat. Drink or hold. (1391 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 3/4/2024 & rated 94 points: Ruby red in color. 14% ABV. Stunning nose of red fruits, blood, Herbes de Provence and leather. Medium body with medium acidity. Rustic fruits in spades. Well balanced. Strawberry, kirsch, iron and roasted herbs on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish with notable tannins. Classic CdP from an overlooked vintage. Best over the next 2-4 years. (1620 views)
Tasted by oldcorke on 3/3/2024 & rated 96 points: Well developed and very drinkable, yet early in drinking window. Substantial wine with very dark core and no evidence of age or decline. Well integrated neutral oak. Grippy tannin, dark blue and black fruits, fresh Provencal herbs, subtle Rhone earth.
Drunk from bottle, over an hour. Deserves 2 hour decant.
Long life ahead in a proper cellar. (1493 views)
Tasted by Yagil on 12/20/2023 & rated 93 points: Chateauneuf du pape tasting (at my home): Nose:
Dark fruit: A powerful array of ripe, dark fruits dominates the nose, including black cherry, blackberry, plum, and cassis. Some suggest hints of blueberry and raspberry may also emerge.
Herbal notes: The classic Southern Rhone garrigue notes of thyme, rosemary, and lavender interweave with the fruit, adding complexity and freshness.
Spices: Subtle hints of pepper, licorice, and even star anise may appear, adding further layers of intrigue.
Oak: While the wine spends time in oak, it's well-integrated and doesn't overpower the fruit. Notes of vanilla, mocha, and tobacco might be present but remain in the background.
Palate:
Full-bodied: This is a rich and powerful wine, but not heavy or cumbersome. It fills the mouth with its dense concentration of fruit.
Velvety tannins: The tannins are ripe and smooth, providing structure without being harsh or astringent.
Balanced acidity: Despite its richness, the wine retains a bright, refreshing acidity that keeps it lively and energetic.
Long finish: The finish is long and lingering, echoing the notes of dark fruit, spice, and garrigue.
Overall:
The 2006 Clos des Papes is a complex, harmonious, and age-worthy wine. It showcases the power and elegance of Châteauneuf-du-Pape at its finest. (2158 views)
Tasted by Vanja1 on 11/29/2023 & rated 93 points: Fortsatt ung og fruktig. Elegant. (2445 views)
Tasted by dizzydd on 11/28/2023: Getting cold here, so felt like picking a Chateuneuf du Pape tonight. This was a classic from a Cdp. Decanted for an hour as the wine is still tannic. Opened up more as the night went along. Dark fruit, perfumed, and some leather. Fantastic CDP (Editor's note: score of 60 removed) (2127 views)
Tasted by acheng on 9/11/2023 & rated 93 points: This one does the job. Finally performing at its potential. Red cherry fruit, generous, garrigue and hiding the alcohol well (2607 views)
(2584 views)
Tasted by WineGuyFL on 7/25/2023 & rated 94 points: This is a moderately expensive wine, but performs at the price point. I originally had 6 bottles. This is the 5th. The 4th bottle was off a little. This one was back to form. It was open for about an hour and a half. I am not going to let the last bottle sit around too long. I have had 2024 down as the last year in the drink window for this one, and I have had more than one case of a CNdP rolling over very quickly near the end of its drink window. (2425 views)
Tasted by hargy on 7/14/2023 & rated 93 points: this has opened up quite beautifully in the last couple of years - very CdP all dark fruits and leather - delicious and probably at tis best (2202 views)
Tasted by Peech on 6/30/2023 & rated 88 points: double-decanted 1½ hours before drinking. Still tannic at first, but smoother on the palate later. A bit of smoke on the nose. (2313 views)
Tasted by redders on 6/5/2023 & rated 94 points: Superb bottle. Light on its feet but profound as well. Ripe damson fruit dancing on palate. With BBQ on sunlit evening (2121 views)
Tasted by Architect817 on 5/27/2023: Great for the first 3 hours, then it started to fade. (1977 views)
Tasted by Jaws4096 on 4/12/2023 & rated 96 points: Decanted through a coffee filter for 90 minutes with heavy sediment removed. Toffee and garrigue on both the nose and initial taste. Soft. Well balanced and showing some really interesting secondary flavors. Brick orange / ruby color. Just pretty wonderful all around. (2532 views)
Tasted by Peech on 4/9/2023 & rated 91 points: drank after decanting for 20 minutes. Pretty fragrant nose with dried herbs, eucalyptus. Pretty sweet on the palate but not to the point of jammy or sugary. Woodsy notes emerged after about 1½ hours in the decanter. (1961 views)
Tasted by NickNYC on 3/27/2023 & rated 94 points: Open one hour in advance. What a great bottle. Gorgeous nose displaying complex ripe dark fruits, olive and burnt herbs. All the notes are singing along together. This is harmonious with restrained power. The palate is medium +, wonderful and silky tanins with a lot of freshness. in a great spot now. (2339 views)
50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 10 + Smaak / Afdronk: 17 + Algemeen / potentieel: 9 = 91/100

Colour: Velvety light red with a subtle beginning of discoloration to orange-brown. Aroma / bouquet: Less expressive and less tertiary than the recently drunk '06. Pleasant and vital. Taste / Aftertaste: Soft acidity, refined tannins, a beautiful balance between acidity, tannins, filling and alcohol. Nothing remains of the alcohol content registered in 2014. Long finish. General / potential: Beautiful, matured Ch9dP. And Ch9dP may not have the aging potential of Bordeaux or Burgundy…. But how extremely pleasant these wines are after 15-20 years! 50 + Color: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 10 + Taste / Aftertaste: 17 + General / potential: 9 = 91/100 (2830 views)
Tasted by dlemyre on 1/13/2023 & rated 93 points: Fabuleux! (2599 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 1/11/2023 & rated 96 points: Monthly Tasting Group HWS: Clos des Papes (By AH): Beautiful bouquet with fresh dark berries, herbs and spices like thyme. On the palate beautiful fruits, truffle, juicy and fresh acidity and round tannin. Very delicious and pleasurable and the leftover of 3 cl. kept overnight in the bottle at room temperature, was still a feast the next day. (3092 views)
Tasted by Get Real on 12/25/2022 & rated 94 points: (from Magnum) opened a couple of hours before drinking then drank over next 7 hours. Not significant change over that time though it opened a little. Still a deep red colour without noticeable bricking. Spicy and rich, still plenty of dark fruit but some tertiary notes and a little smoke. Soft tannins and some acidity together with a hint of sweetness. A really enjoyable wine. (2244 views)
Tasted by beatles on 12/24/2022 & rated 95 points: A true neuf - and still young; spicy, rich, a wee bit rustic upon opening. Much better on Day 2, still Southern, but cool, calm and collected, rich, creamy, full bodied. Early drinking window has opened, IMHO.
#X-mas (2861 views)
Tasted by Larre on 11/26/2022 & rated 96 points: Classic, seamless, with a lot of life still. A beauty to enjoy over the next 10 years. 96+ (2126 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 11/18/2022: I should have looked at my previous note before opening this. In the event, it was poured and drunk immediately and while it was pleasant enough, it wasn't hugely expressive. (2153 views)
Tasted by grapist on 11/14/2022 & rated 92 points: Three hour decant was not enough. There was still a tight and bitter finish. All else was spot on. Half an hour in the glass and this smoothed out greatly. Previous bottles were more accessible, and a bit better (2355 views)
Tasted by Caruso on 11/13/2022 & rated 95 points: Ruby to garnet in thin layers. This is a since release optimal stored bottle, with a perfect cork only soaked to 1-2 mm. Sweet cherries, olives, different spicy notes and herbs. On the palate quite smooth with still noticeable but low levels of tannin. In terms of intensity it is a bit behind my expectations given the performance of other bottles. Nevertheless outstanding. Maybe a low performing bottle or on a fast evolutionary track? I don't know. Well, there is at least one bottle left in my cellar. 5/12/18/10. -2030+? (2091 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
