| Community Tasting Notes (average 94.4 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 39 notes) | | | Tasted by Anonymous on 11/15/2009 & rated 90 points: too young, after several hours it gave a hint of what is to come. (854 views) | | | Tasted by pbaek on 11/14/2009: Anders' 50-year birthday at Haga Restaurant in Oslo. RPs comparison to a "top-notch grand cru Burgundy from the Cote de Nuits." is just so off that its not even funny. The 2006 Clos des Papes is a gigantic wine and I am not sure this is meant in a positive way. The color is 'thick' and almost black. Highly expressive nose of garrigue, licorice, ripe black cherry fruit and liquor. Big in the mouth, stains the teeth and overpowers the palate and it is "tipping the scales at 15.2% natural alcohol" (RP) so don't go near this wine with a match. Got better and more civil with air and the quail absorbed some of the alcohol, but still I was left with an impression that Avril is now stepping on the extraction pedal like never before and perhaps Clos des Papes has moved on to a style that I don't appreciate as much as Clos des Papes from the 90s and before that. I'm not so sure a Chateauneuf du Pape should taste like Amarone or Port. Having said that I am willing to give this wine the benefit of the doubt and wait another 7-10 years for final judgement. This is clearly a young wine. But any comparison to a Burgundy is a joke of unheard proportions. (1184 views) | | | Tasted by Jeff W on 10/25/2009: Mute. Tight. Returning to the bottle after 24 hours it is more approachable. Trademark power and finesse. Intense, dark, spicy fruit and solid tannins. This is a huge wine. Give it a massive decant now, but preferably give it a decade or two. exc (1514 views) | | | Tasted by docvin1107 on 10/2/2009 & rated 94 points: Huge wine now - maybe even more to come! Decanted for 2 hours. The nose a little restrained but right of the bat I got lot of rashberries - also some cherries, leather, pepper and minerality dancing in the back. On the palate it knocks you over - huge weight and tons of structure although it is very polished and balanced. Darker fruits attack your palate like a young Mike Tyson and towars the finish it becomes more meaty, earthy and spicy/peppery with very pleasant tannins. This is by no means a simple wine but lacks some complexity to make it extraordinary - already a rockstar but in a quite mainstream way. I hope this develops more personality/complexity over the years to come. Will try it again in 2-3 years. 94+ (2067 views) | | | Tasted by tim m on 9/12/2009 & rated 97 points: Hard to imagine a better CDP. Unbelieveably balanced and long. The fruit really opens up after an hour or two open. I would decant for at least one hour if not longer. The tannins are really fine. Fantastic all around. Will cellar for a long time. Finish just goes on and on. (2304 views) | | | Tasted by dionysis on 8/25/2009 & rated 95 points: New at CDP, so I don't really have the breadth of experience tasting older vintages. That said, this is pretty spot-on, and already has nuances of dark fruit, spice, stone and a long finish. Definitely got better the longer it sat in the glass (2 hours or so). (2948 views) | | | Tasted by spendergast on 8/15/2009 & rated 96 points: Decanted 2 hrs. A great CDP, should be exceptional in a few years. (3405 views) | | | Tasted by slvrfish on 8/1/2009 & rated 92 points: "waiting is the hardest part" Black cherry aromas mixed with spice, graphite. Everything is as it should be at this time. It will be Extraordinary if it gains complexity with further age. (3230 views) | | | Tasted by Frank Murray III on 7/27/2009: This too got decanted, much like the 06 Saxum James Berry, roughly for about 3 hours in total. Enough? Don't have enough experience to know but this wine did not connect with me. Still some chalky edges early on, with strawberry, black cherry and tasted a little sweet, brown sugared. What's the hype? (3795 views) | | | Tasted by lean88j on 7/18/2009 & rated 92 points: guessing the bottle is too early to drink. not too much on the nose yet, some slight smoke, spice, meat, typical rhone flavored wine. dark ruby. on the palate does not have much fruit or tertiary flavor developed yet. licorice and medium bodied on the palate. did not come across as particularly intense. was somewhat acidic (but ripe); so yes similar to what Parker said, as a Burgundian type of cdp, but this wine unlike many which can be heavy came across as more acidic and elegant style. just did not relaly develop much flavor, density, or layers for me so it is a very nice wine but failed to achieve at the heights. (3517 views) | | | Tasted by Jody Smith on 7/7/2009: Pop and poured. Needs decant or years in the cellar. Tight as a drum, and was a complete waste to open this now. Very primary, but offers a sense of concentration and elegance. A bit warm, low pH, and firm, but classy structure. (4156 views) | | | Tasted by mye on 6/5/2009 & rated 96 points: Purple in color. Pepper spices, dark fruit on the nose. Wow i can smell this all day. It was at a restaurant so I couldnt' take too detailed notes. Approachable for a 2006 but definitely young. Decanted for 1 hour, and notes of cherry came out. Shut down after 1 hour, but reopened up at about 1 hour 45 mins. Well balanced, lush tannins, long lingering finish. Fantastic. Enjoyed with a Lobster pot pie, and a sea scallop with Risotto. (4223 views) | | | Tasted by Niagara on 6/2/2009 & rated 94 points: Young and/but delicious -- cherry jam, stones, and smoke on the nose and on the palate, with a 20+ second finish, during which the wine turns peppery and a touch musky. This promises to develop into an extraordinary wine, and is very nearly one already. (4453 views) | | | Tasted by JJL on 5/10/2009 & rated 94 points: White pepper and garrigue on the nose. Big tannins with good acidity. Tea, white pepper, red licorice and cinnamon on the palate. Not nearly as sweet as the '05. (4779 views) | | | Tasted by rmodak on 5/10/2009 & rated 94 points: Lush round and youthful, a mouthful of black cherry, licorice, herbs de provence. This is a clean wine with tremendous purity of fruit, pleasure driven at this point, and very youthful (4671 views) | | | Tasted by lek55 on 5/5/2009 & rated 95 points: (3471 views) | | | Tasted by brewking on 5/4/2009 & rated 93 points: (3651 views) | | | Tasted by Anonymous on 5/2/2009: Fairly dark. Extremely forward, attractive nose with strawberry, caramel, fig, and a whiff of surmaturite. Very lush, round, with great mouth coverage, low acidity and melting tannin. This somehow manages to remain a sense of lightness despite its scale. Long core of sappy darker fruit and olive on the very long finish. Although this is shockingly approachable for a young Clos des Papes (especially compared to pre-2003 vintages), I'm afraid I must agree with the critics that this is a fantastic Chateauneuf. (4621 views) | | | Tasted by Yiannis on 4/30/2009 & rated 94 points: Purple. Still locked, but showing terrific minerals, eycalyptus, kirsch fruit and spices. Full bodied, smooth and balanced, but merely giving an idea of what is to be expected from this wine in the future. Long finish. Patience will be rewarded. After 2012. (5099 views) | | | Tasted by windgod on 4/19/2009 & rated 91 points: 14.6%. A similarly dark colored babe. Its clear nose with raspberries, black pepper and kirsch liqueur-like notes. Fresh palate that is elegantly textured with some old vine grenache sap. Herbs, spices and hints of sweet strawberries. A long finish and a touch of spicy-sweet grip at the end. This was clearly out shadowed by the Mordoree, both paired side by side the grilled meat. I liked this, just that Mordoree stole the show. (5364 views) | | | Tasted by Harry Cantrell on 3/17/2009 & rated 93 points: medium garnet. Nose of raspberries and cream, mouth medium weight seamless but playing close to the chest. Give it some age. (6093 views) | | | Tasted by cct on 2/8/2009 & rated 96 points: decanted fo r4 hours prior to serving.
Deep ruby with a flat out gorgeous nose of pure Grenache. Almost like condensing all the complexity and beauty that grenache has in a pure, very precise and balanced jewel of a wine. Very young, yet approachable. A primary showing for sure. On the palate, what impressed me was the clarity and focus combined with its size and depth. Mostly fruit driven with tons of structure right now. Really multifaceted and with an almost Burgundian transparency and precision. Some provencal herbs, and meaty notes in the background but at this point in time this is just a lesson in youthful, unmanipulated Grenache done damn well. Fantastic stuff. 96 pts (6359 views) | | | Tasted by Terkel on 2/7/2009 & rated 94 points: Pegau Reserve Vertical Tasting: Dark red color with a bluish rim. At first mostly milk product on the nose, but it blows of and opens with pure and delicate forest berries. Supple, refreshing fruit on the taste, primarily pure raspberries. Gaining more weight and masculinity over the midpalate to the finish, with nuanced notes of pepper and licorice. Great length, super acidity and well integrated tannins. I enjoy this still very much. (6029 views) | | | Tasted by wallnib on 2/1/2009 & rated 97 points: 3 hour decant... Wow! Expectations were high for this one and nobody was disappointed. Fantastic concentration with its deep purple/blue hue and explosive aromas of boysenberry, huckleberry and milk chocolate. The palate was of course somewhat young and grippy, but the lush fruit-driven mouth-feel was like a kind of iron velvet! The finish lasted and seduced for over a minute... Tremendous.
