Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.9 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 214 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Hamersly on 1/28/2022 & rated 93 points: Pnp. MCLANEW’s notes below are spot on. Still going strong two hours after opening, this is fully mature but not at all over the hill. (1394 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 12/21/2021 & rated 94 points: Popped and poured. This has aged really gracefully. Quite reminiscent of a classic CDP with a little California ripeness evident. Raspberry, black cherry, herbs and smoke come through. Medium bodied, interesting and complex. I would drink this over the next few years. (1363 views)
Tasted by mpdonnel on 5/22/2020 & rated 91 points: Holding up well, probably on a slight decline. Stewed red fruits, some good funk, very smooth. Fruits seem to have faded a bit. I'd be drinking over the next year or two. (1839 views)
Tasted by alohamahalo on 4/4/2020: This aged surprisingly well - we lost track of it and didn’t expect to hold it so long. It is vibrant and complex even after 16 years. (1851 views)
Tasted by dino_mike on 4/6/2019 & rated 92 points: Very fragrant at first opening. Taking on bricky color at this age. After 2 hour open to air, a big spicy nose turns into gobs of cinnamon spiced baked pie cherry flavors that are very rich and smooth. Some chinese five-spic too but overall less red fruit and more rich spice in the mouth. Great finish. It will probably hold but I think its at its peak and should be drunk now or it will just become lighter and thinner. Same for larger formats, enjoy now IMO (2561 views)
Tasted by cos82 on 3/16/2019 & rated 93 points: Wasn't sure what to expect, but I found this to be delicious. No tannin, smooth and balanced. Lots of various black fruits married with spice, leather, cedar and minerals. Pleasant nose and purple black in color. (1757 views)
Tasted by SCM Fan on 11/3/2018 & rated 92 points: From Magnum purchased at winery. Gamey, red fruits on the nose. Color- ruby red, no bricking at the rim. Tannins smooth and resolved. Remarkable wine. (1960 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 7/26/2018 & rated 92 points: Medium red in color. Nice red fruits, grilled herbs, cedar, smooth tannins, with a little smoke. (2122 views)
Tasted by PSirah Tampa on 9/7/2017 & rated 93 points: Yum. It's finally time. (2478 views)
Tasted by hoops92 on 5/11/2017 & rated 91 points: Still drinking nicely. Great balance in this wine from initial taste with a long finish. Nice food wine. (2236 views)
Tasted by Herschel Krustofski on 12/21/2016 & rated 85 points: Promises but does not deliver.
Needs to breath for 30 min. Doesn't improve much with further breathing. Seems past peak.
Comes across as slightly unbalanced with alcohol standing out.
Not something to write home about. (2712 views)
Tasted by mtaczak on 10/6/2016 & rated 91 points: Strange to say it, but I think this is in a closed phase still at 12 years. Did not totally open up even after nearly 2 hours open. You could taste that there was plenty of material there, but it seemed to be hiding and not open for business. Give it plenty of air or maybe another 2-3 years. (2760 views)
Tasted by wilypod on 8/27/2016 & rated 92 points: Dark, brooding red, slightly murky. Could not extract the whole cork (weak core caused it to disintegrate), so poured through an inox mesh. Wine absolutely sound, thank goodness.

Generous Mourvedre character. Complex aromas, meat, game, licorice, sloe gin, blueberry, lavender pastille and garrigue, plus that wild grape note that always reminds me of Welch's grape juice. Medium weight tangy mouth of red and black fruit, Korean BBQ, balsamic notes and silky tannins at the back end. Lots of life left in it. 4+13+17+8 (2675 views)
Tasted by jam71 on 7/10/2016 & rated 90 points: Waited long on this one and it was delicious. I feel it's ready now and would hesitate to stretch it to the end of the drink date listed. (2494 views)
Tasted by treesritter on 2/18/2016 & rated 88 points: Tired (2604 views)
Tasted by Tomrg58 on 2/9/2016 & rated 91 points: Thinner than I expected, but otherwise liked the shape it has taken 12 years in. Showing a French style that so many Paso Robles wines often lack. Was worth the wait. (2690 views)
Tasted by vanpe003 on 1/21/2016: No detailed notes. Thinner than I expected. This particular bottle seemed as though it might be on the decline. Hoping, with 3 other bottles in the cellar, that this one was a "one off". (2508 views)
Tasted by bmr67 on 10/29/2015 & rated 92 points: A little leather. Brambleberry. Blueish berry notes. Very fine tannins. Strong fruit with balanced tannins and acids. Mildly funky nose with slight mushroom. Very very nice with some room for improvement. Decanted for short time. (2779 views)
Tasted by bottlewasher on 5/31/2015 & rated 90 points: Haas and company are finally delivering on their promise to replicate the Beaucastel beauty in California. Always been a big fan of the premium varietals (both white and red) as well as the Espirit white from TC but am now seeing some signs of serious success with their blends. Panoplie still has a way to go to measure up to The Homage. Nice wine worth the wait. Exited to see what the next couple years bring! (2632 views)
Tasted by BakoJon on 5/30/2015 & rated 96 points: Outstanding (2122 views)
Tasted by rsbeck on 1/20/2015 & rated 91 points: Pop and pour. Started nicely, but gained nuance and interest with lots of air. (2585 views)
Tasted by guitarguy on 12/5/2014 & rated 88 points: Mourvedre more prevalent now, bit of skunk and earth, blue berry nose, still a bit dry on finish. Time to drink. (2600 views)
Tasted by Winokdub on 11/3/2014 & rated 92 points: Wow. Nice wine all the way around. Drinking great but not worth holding on to. Drink em if you got em (2595 views)
Tasted by theRealPepe on 9/11/2014: Day 1: Nice bouquet disturbed by strong alcohol smell. Palate is smooth with resolved tannin, cherry and plum. Nice drink but not special. Day 2: Bouquet is day old open wine. Palate is much better than day 1, with cherry melting into raspberry, earth and chocolate. Still, when compared to it's compadres in the Southern Rhone, a slouch.Very Good. (2670 views)
Tasted by J2K on 9/7/2014: Still drinking well and balanced but no reason to sit on these, drink up!! (2899 views)

Tablas Creek

Producer website
Tablas Creek Vineyard, founded by the Perrin family of Chateau de Beaucastel and Robert Haas of Vineyard Brands, is dedicated to growing grape varieties traditional to France's Rhone Valley. The partners chose hilly western Paso Robles for its limestone soils, rugged terrain, and ocean influence. All Tablas Creek wines are estate grown using environmentally sustainable practices.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
