Community Tasting Notes (average 87.8 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 39 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Jefferyist on 3/13/2024 & rated 90 points: Smells like sweet muscat, a bit of graphite and honey, mildly sweet with slight acidity, nice to drink, aged well, originally buttery when fresh but it's mellowed out. Drink now. (96 views)
Tasted by WYCHRIS on 11/10/2020: Delicious 😋 (736 views)
Tasted by b.w_anderson on 4/11/2020 & rated 81 points: 2014 is probably well past peak, but the malo notes didn’t offend me. Would buy again if I needed a “big-mouth” Chard at a great price. (826 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 4/1/2018 & rated 88 points: Easter Wines with Family (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Light medium golden color. Small glass over 15 minutes. Poured this for my Aunt again who loved it. I found it more interesting now with some additional age on it. Golden delicious apple and pear notes, toffee, wood spice, hints of vanilla, medium body, quite drinkable. A nice quaffer. (2446 views)
Tasted by oldwines on 9/1/2017 & rated 87 points: Tasted before using most of this for a Beurre Blanc. Bright medium golden yellow. Nose/palate was vanilla/oak, butter and a touch of pineapple. Fairly low acidity, but pleasant enough for a pretty straightforward modern Lower end Chard. A bit short on the finish. Worked in the sauce just fine. (2550 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 4/16/2017 & rated 87 points: Just a taste. Very serviceable typical styled Cali chard with butter, golden fruits and oak. Got this for my Aunt who can pound it down and puts ice cubes in it anyway. Actually too good for that purpose. If I could just bring myself to buy $4 Pinot Grigio....87+pts. (3053 views)
Tasted by Tiderunner22 on 3/12/2017 & rated 89 points: Medium body with oak influences however, not overdone with the oak. Fruit is up front with fair amount of acidity. This wine presents well and really matches well with a wide range of foods. (2256 views)
Tasted by SKHof on 2/4/2017 & rated 89 points: Love it. Rich golden color, light nose with foral hints. A bit of the buttery start, but not overwhelming. Classic dry style without too much fruit. Finishes a bit dry, but pleasant. It wants fairly rich food or creamy cheese. (1511 views)
Tasted by bjschmitt on 1/1/2017 & rated 87 points: Served with left-over pork roast and squash/apple sautéed in Calvados.
Pretty yellow/gold wine.
Orange and peach on the nose, with perhaps a touch of honey lurking in the back.
Nice up-front acid, some vanilla pops out. The fruit does balance the acid. Very short finish. Agreeable but not much depth. (1459 views)
Tasted by gravedee on 11/26/2016 & rated 90 points: Nice style - some up front acidity but balanced by vanilla, more savory notes on the back end. Great QPR. (1428 views)
Tasted by eric lemieux on 11/23/2016 & rated 87 points: Bon Q/P dans le style Chardonnay Californien bien beurré. (997 views)
 Tasted by Box57 on 10/17/2016: . (1398 views)
Tasted by wabi47 on 9/26/2016 & rated 87 points: served very cold then warming up on a hot afternoon; round and smooth with notable but well integrated oak. Very serviceable (1101 views)
Tasted by tomoem on 9/7/2016 & rated 87 points: Surprisingly rich at the start. A melancholy aroma and taste at the start. It struck me as buttery and fruit forward. The flavors include peaches and honey but this had a thin backbone. The wine lacked depth or complexity and had virtually no finish. (1147 views)
Tasted by David_T on 5/26/2016 & rated 85 points: Had a taste at a tasting.Aromas of butered popcorn. The palate shows a bit of apple but mostly butter and oak. Okay if you like that style but not for me. (1473 views)
Tasted by DanSm on 4/5/2016 & rated 85 points: Becoming overpriced for what's in the bottle. (1486 views)
Tasted by oakville72 on 4/1/2016 & rated 87 points: Relatively deep gold for such a young Chardonnay. Nose and flavors indicate barrel fermentation and at least partial malolactic conversion. A fairly typical Salinas Valley lowland wine as indicated by the fruit and slightly vegetal accent (from mechanical harvesting?). Flavors are full but acidity lacking, indicating that this wine will be best in its youth.

Fascinating to me that the Cellartracker reviews of this wine say that the price is about $12. That's closer to the prices for the Wente Morning Fog Livermore Valley Chardonnay in my neck of the woods (Minnesota), which Wente apparently deems lesser. Interesting that Wente would market itself as the "first family of California Chardonnay" based on its Livermore Valley origins yet consider its newer Arroyo Seco vineyards as superior. (1385 views)
Tasted by BBinSC on 3/26/2016 & rated 88 points: As before - good bargain at $11.99. (1368 views)
Tasted by BBinSC on 3/12/2016 & rated 88 points: Good, a touch young and not quite harmonic - elegant with a nice finish, mineral notes, nicely balanced between acid and lushness. Great qpr at $11.99 from Costco. (913 views)
Tasted by Kskels on 3/12/2016 & rated 90 points: Slightly tart at the front, but turns buttery and smooth. (1243 views)
Tasted by jrhonda160 on 3/7/2016 & rated 91 points: Very good, always solid, not buttery (767 views)
Tasted by wmccone54 on 12/27/2015 & rated 90 points: A great QPR at less than $13. Slightly tart citrus, vanilla bean, creamy butter, and spicy stone fruits. Balanced and solid. Good finish. Long track record of consistency. (1001 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 11/23/2015 & rated 87 points: Light straw yellow color; apple, butter poached pear nose; medium bodied, ripe apple, baked pear palate with some balancing acidity; medium-plus finish (14.5% alcohol) 87+ points (512 views)
Tasted by surfnturf on 9/17/2015 & rated 93 points: Extremely beautiful and rich Chardonnay. For the price quite possibly the best California Chardonnay available. Lots of ripe apple, pear and tropical fruit balanced by a healthy dose of creamy, cinnamon tinged oak. For such a rich wine extremely balanced and on point in acidity. Highly recommended. Chardonnay

The Chardonnay Grape

Single Vineyard

The wine takes its name from a single vineyard owned by the Scholz family, in the northern area of the Barossa Valley. This single vineyard Shiraz is a great example of vibrant Barossa fruit. Dense dark fruits and a hint of chocolate. An exercise in opulence.

Elegance and fineness wines, sourced from a single vineyard, planted to develop a specific variety.

The vineyard surrounding the 1905 built Ebenezer church in Barossa's north are defined by a distinct bright red clay soil. The Scholz vineyard has a remarkable lack of variation across this block. This area of the Barossa is renowned for its richly flavoured Shiraz with intense and luscious middle palate flavours. The wine from the Scholz Estate vineyard is an excellent example of this.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
