Tasted by nicolaes on 1/1/2024 & rated 90 points: Didn’t expect this wine to taste so good in 2023 but it truly hit the spot. Just a tiny bit alcoholic on the nose but the finish was long with nice fruit. Would buy again if I can find it (169 views)
Tasted by Ranjan on 3/24/2017 & rated 91 points: Excellent zin, drinking well now. (3274 views)
Tasted by donash.com on 1/26/2017 & rated 92 points: This one was produced before Orin Swift changed owners. (3434 views)
Tasted by hansende on 10/25/2015 & rated 91 points: Drank over two days. Nice dark berry fruit, cherry, and cola. Soft tannins. Peppery long finish. Not over done. A lovely wine. About as good as zinfandel gets. Better on the first day. (5053 views)
Tasted by eliassen2014 on 9/4/2015 & rated 91 points: absolutely amazing!!! One of my favorite Zinfandels (4992 views)
Tasted by pinot_glenn on 6/11/2015: wild cherries, anise (5314 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 6/10/2015 & rated 88 points: Just not the best year for this wine. Have had other vintages that were just more defined, more zin like. This bottle seems just a bit heavy or muddied, some good zin qualities on the nose but they seemed to dim as the bottle came up to room temp and the palate just never hit a home run as some other years had. Overpriced in my opinion when compared against a few other zin/zin blends. (3314 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 1/17/2015 & rated 90 points: I humbly apologize for the negative notes I wrote about this wine. It may have been bottle variation, or this wine just might have needed more time, but this, my last bottle, was pretty damned tasty. Dark color, nice "zinny" nose, surprising richness, and a very good finish. There are better zins for less money, but not THAT much less. (3807 views)
Tasted by Xfactor on 1/14/2015 & rated 91 points: @Taste of Texas, great bottle and reasonable price. Rich red fruit, bracing acidity initially but composes quickly. Great with a heavily marbled ribeye and seared button mushrooms. Long finish with blue fruit and brown cooking spice. (2263 views)
Tasted by Aparritz on 1/3/2015 & rated 91 points: This needs serious time to open up but it rewards with many different flavor sand profiles along the way. Solid complexity but just a tad thin. Very expensive for what you're getting, but overall this is a great bottle. (2245 views)
Tasted by Pcrage on 12/28/2014 & rated 90 points: Drinking nicely. I would consume over next couple years. (2060 views)
Tasted by mpsocal on 12/27/2014 & rated 89 points: Solid wine. Nice flavor of cherry, decent finish. I'd drink this again. (1949 views)
Tasted by Castle Peak on 12/4/2014 & rated 87 points: Decent Wed night drinker. Nothing memorable. (1485 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 11/28/2014 & rated 88 points: I've written some pretty nasty notes about this wine in the past couple years. At this stage in its development, however, I feel compelled to say that it's not half bad. Decent red fruit on the nose and on the palate. Fairly full-bodied, with a very good, lengthy finish (where the alcohol was a little too prominent). All in all, a pretty good zin, albeit somewhat overpriced. (1452 views)
Tasted by Louisville Vino on 7/20/2014: good wine but not the best from Orin Swift (2497 views)
Tasted by DawnMarieK on 4/27/2014: good - I would buy it again (2942 views)
Tasted by fred0711 on 3/29/2014 & rated 90 points: 2nd bottle. Very tasty. For Kayla's MN party. (3064 views)
Tasted by TSTEW22 on 3/1/2014 & rated 91 points: I need to find more of this fabulous zin! Deep in color, with rich blackberry, dark cherry and vanilla notes. Delish. (3156 views)
Tasted by BeerBudget on 1/7/2014: Opaque, purple-plum color in the glass. Nose of wood smoke and undefined berries. Rich, full, spiced fruitcake palate, but with enough acidity to keep things lively. Quite static structurally, with soft tannins perhaps made to seem sharper by the high alcohol (15.5%). Creamy finish with long fig and strawberry aftertaste. (3775 views)
Tasted by affordableCollector on 1/6/2014 & rated 91 points: red, violet, in color. cherry, raspberry, spice, white pepper, sea salt, clove, campfire, burnt wood, coffee, on the nose. medium acid, medium tannins, on this enjoyable finish. (2166 views)
Tasted by Z1nnfull on 11/29/2013 & rated 90 points: We had a magnum of Saldo, which was more than plenty for four adults for T-giving meal. Let this breathe/decant for a couple hours and it opened up nicely. Nose & taste were of black cherry and some oak. Some earthy touches. Would describe as medium-bodied with just better than a medium finish. Good acidity/integration of the 15.5% alcohol made it a good match for the food. Winemakers notes indicated only 80% Zin & from 6 different AVAs. It struck me as more of a Dry Creek Valley Zin -- not timid, not robust -just elegant.
What it seemed to lack that would have raised the score in my mind was the slightly spicy nature found in some good Zins from any AVA.
Rated a little better than 89 the first night; the second night showed further improvement to be scored a 90. If you have a magnum, I would give it another year, although the standard bottle may be ready now with some breathing and decanting.
This wine was neither a bargain nor overpriced. (2761 views)
Tasted by danershi@gmail.com on 11/17/2013 & rated 90 points: Aromatics from this wine include strawberry and spice. On the palate this wine ripples with power! This is a big wine that envelopes the tongue with dark berries, thick coating tannins and a pop of spice. As the wine unfolds there are hints of tobacco and black cherry. There is a bit of heat as this heavyweight clocks in at 15.5% alcohol. (2725 views)
Tasted by pricseno on 9/19/2013 & rated 89 points: Very drinkable Zin! (3390 views)
Tasted by deon40g on 9/14/2013 & rated 89 points: The 2009 Orin Swift Saldo easily broaches the "Best Wines Under $30" category. It's a great value for the money and serves as a crowd pleaser for red wine drinkers...especially those who like big, fruit-forward wines. However, the 15.5% alcohol shows through on the nose and the palette. Overall, it is a zinfandel that will make a regular appearance on my table. If you like Saldo, try its big brother from Orin Swift, The Prisoner. Wine Spectator rates the 2009 Saldo an 88, whereas the CellarTracker community gives it a 90. I rate it 89 points with a slight downgrade for the alcohol notes. A great wine to have on hand.

Rating Scale: Extraordinary (95-100 points); Outstanding (90-94); Very Good to Excellent (85-89); Good (80-84); Average (75-79); Below average (70-74); Avoid (50-69)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
