Tasted by bps2266 on 3/15/2023: dense and purple, no bricking. blueberry and blackberry nose with faint herb. a vein of lead and black rock is present. full bodied with good enough acidity to keep it lifted. plenty of ripe dark berry flavors and some root beer. fine sandy tannins on the back. finishes dry and long. end of my bottles but this has another 5-10 years in it. (749 views)
Tasted by brigcampbell on 5/3/2022: Kutch Grand Tasting Round 1; 4/25/2022-5/3/2022 (FMIII in the OC): Smells northern Rhone which is a great start. Cured meat. Dark blackberry and some blueberry. Mineral textures on palate. Very nice. (1710 views)
Tasted by River Rat on 4/30/2022: Kutch Retrospective Sonoma County Chardonnay/Sonoma Cost Pinot Noir; 4/30/2022-5/1/2022 (FMII’s in San Juan Capistrano): My last 2010. Man do these keep getting getter or what? Loads of blueberry, red meat and bacon. Lots of bacon. Palate is still fresh and alive with the stem inclusion adding to the lift. Concentrated dark fruit, wild game and a chalky finish. Easy 5-10 years remaining on this wine. Well done Paul! (1693 views)
Tasted by fred o. on 6/19/2021 & rated 92 points: potpourri gathering (JS's): Nose dark fruited.
Palate tart acidity. Some tannin. Raspberries. A mineral savory note. Still young and vibrant (750 views)
Tasted by maxmanx on 4/23/2021: My last 2 bottles, and still going strong! (1719 views)
Tasted by Backdoctor on 4/18/2021 & rated 92 points: Still plenty fruit on the palate, soft tannins. drinking well now (1147 views)
Tasted by maxmanx on 11/10/2020: Really good even on PnP. (1445 views)
Tasted by td1836 on 7/31/2020 & rated 92 points: Last of my 2010 bottles. This has aged wonderfully and was enjoyable every time over the past 5 years. This bottle was still going strong, delicious on both the first and second day. (1332 views)
Tasted by fred o. on 11/16/2019: Opaque violet. Nose violets, dark fruited. Palate silky dark fruits with some anise, fruity intensity, some cherry brightness.

Great balance with an old-world flair, still drinking strongly. 92 pts (1222 views)
Tasted by Sugarb on 10/19/2019 & rated 93 points: Right around it’s peak at this time. Little decanting required. Not the spiciest of Syrahs, but the fruit and structure offer plenty of depth and character. Paired beautifully with Tri-tip. (1457 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 6/26/2019 & rated 92 points: PnP. Aroma is full of dark berry interlaced with with meat and bacon fat. On the palate is has very good depth and structure with good acidity that doesn’t often come with a wine with this low alcohol. Blackberry meat continues on the palate. (1699 views)
Tasted by David_T on 1/28/2019: Continuing to drink beautifully, notes unchanged. (2000 views)
Tasted by Meerlust on 11/23/2018 & rated 88 points: Dark purple color with a violet rim. Expressive nose of dark cherry, plum, floral elements, and toasty oak. The palate was tart with plum skin, dark cherry, earth, and abundant, toasty oak. This medium-bodied wine has vibrant acidity and some tannin on the finish. Overall, this was expressive on the nose but displayed more oak and tart fruit in this bottle. It paired quite well with beef stew as well as Thanksgiving turkey. (2150 views)
Tasted by EMark on 8/27/2018: Quite aromatic—berry fruit. Not terribly fruit forward—some cherry, raspberry. Tannin is only barely noticeable. Somewhat tart. Not particularly full-bodied. Pretty easy to drink, (2333 views)
Tasted by grafstrb on 4/29/2018: -- decanted 45 min. before initial taste --
-- tasted non-blind over a couple hours --

NOSE: young, inky Syrah; light oak; light stems; pepper; medium expressiveness after one hour open.

BODY: lots of fine particulate matter; some sediment in bottle; black-violet color of great depth; medium to medium-full bodied.

TASTE: good acidity – medium+; purple fruited; light oak; tastes quite young; alc. well-hidden; ripe fruit flavors; not funky; not tannic; Drink Now – 2023. (2709 views)
Tasted by Screameagle on 3/13/2018 & rated 88 points: Not my cup of tea nor Joan’s. (2694 views)
Tasted by Sugarb on 3/12/2018 & rated 93 points: So much better than the last bottle, had ~2 years ago. This is definitely in a good drinking window now. Beautiful nose that carries through to the palate. Has more time, not so sure about the 6 more years of the stated window. (2686 views)
Tasted by Mr.Overhill on 2/4/2018 & rated 92 points: Feels like it is a case study in a very slow and steady evolution; dark and tangy fruit has bracing acidity, strong tannins and subtle stony finish. It was open at first but closed down somewhat in the second day. Let it sleep another 5 years. (2228 views)
Tasted by thalver on 1/27/2018: Drinking well, if a bit on the softer/more rounded end of the spectrum. dark fruits, a bit meaty, but not as aromatically expressive or presenting the cut (and coarser tannins) that a 2009 did recently. With time open, the tannins did make themselves known, and were a bit drying on the finish. I think I'll hold remaining bottles a couple more years to look for more evolution of flavors (2042 views)
Tasted by td1836 on 1/6/2018 & rated 92 points: Tasted as part of a 6 vintage Halcon Alturas tasting (2010-2015). This was my #2, and tied for the group #2. It had the least bright fruit, and was more focused on the meaty and darker berry flavors. Round and supple, very good and is aging well. (1872 views)
Tasted by bps2266 on 1/2/2018 & rated 92 points: drank at cellar temp with no decant. deep crimson color. nose with ample slate, lead, dark berry, and bacon. full bodied with medium acidity. dark cherry, ripe raspberry, blackberry, and stone on the palate. structured fine tannin backbone and a medium length finish. ready to drink, should easily hold 5+ years. (1673 views)
Tasted by David_T on 12/25/2017: Another year and unchanged from my 2016 note. Drinking great now but no rush. Awesome qpr. (1652 views)
Tasted by McMalbec on 10/2/2017 & rated 92 points: Drinking well at this point. (1957 views)
Tasted by EMichels on 2/18/2017 & rated 90 points: Meaty; Fatter than I remember the '09; Good (2690 views)
Tasted by G.A. Parker on 1/28/2017: LA Rookies Syrah Dinner (South Pasadena): Opaque garnet, red fruit, smoked meats, herbaceousness. Balanced, nice acidity throughout the mouth, long finish. (3006 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

North Coast

The North Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA) in California, covering more than three million acres, includes Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake counties, and portions of Marin and Solano counties. (see The Wine Institute for more information)
