 Tasted by europat55 on 3/28/2024 & rated 91 points: Domaine Pegau 1995-2008 Vertical: Nose: 91, Palate: 90
My #8, Group's #6. Tasted Blind. (273 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 10/1/2023 & rated 89 points: Started off with a heavy, bruised, slightly oxidized pallor but freshend some with air, gaining meat, olive, pepperoni, fur scents. Palate still kind of ponderous and lacking vivacity. (970 views)
Tasted by short and confused on 1/19/2023: Last bottle and it was pretty rough. No fruit and no pleasure. Ah well (1691 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 12/12/2022 & rated 93 points: Bright medium ruby color. Sweet red berries with orange notes on the nose. Notes of sweet, almost overripe strawberries, pomegranate, cranberries (especially in the finish), and a bitter red berry finish. Soft texture and a long finish. (1677 views)
Tasted by Cutthroat Trout on 10/3/2022 & rated 95 points: Surprisingly the cork came out in 1 piece. Heavy sediment in the neck of the bottle.

Had the bottle upright for about 24 hours but still pours a bit cloudy. Slight browning around the rim of the glass but less than expected for a 27 year old wine.

At first I noticed an earthy hint of Brettanomyces along with an herbal component. The house smells of lamb and rosemary which may be affecting my aroma perception of this wine but I smell a bit of rosemary in the glass.

Now the wine has been open for about an hour. There is subtle red fruit in the nose and most of the Brett has blown off. Still has an earthy herbal character.

The flavor has red fruit flavors, especially dark cherry along with red raspberry. Good acidity allows the fruit flavor to come through along with the herbal component and nice rounded silky tannins. This leads to a very long pleasant finish.

This bottle has been open for about 2 hours now and the fruit continues to open up. I like well aged CDP's and this bottle has all of the organoleptic qualities I enjoy with wines from this region.

Overall this is a very enjoyable well aged CDP. (1809 views)
Tasted by TheFoodieTraveler on 7/4/2022 & rated 94 points: Funky and earthy - some barnyard. Still a little primary fruit. Delicious but drink now (2141 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 7/3/2022 & rated 92 points: Loads of funk on the nose. Even after 30+ minutes it did not blow off completely. On the palate you still have it in your nose but by the back half of the palate the fruit and elegance was showing very well. (1735 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 3/31/2022 & rated 92 points: Clear medium red. Roasted meats, tobacco, blood and black cherry. Dry cherry and spice flavours and a dry finish.

This is definitely past it’s prime but still holding on. Fades in the glass. (1671 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 12/12/2021 & rated 93 points: From Magnum. No decant. Took about an hour to come around, but the Grenache fruit then started to bloom. A somewhat restrained nose by CDP standards, but the Grenache, dried herbs and some some Oak all came through on the nose and palate. Very smooth. Silt stained bottle on the inside. (1880 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 8/21/2021: Another almost unbelievably good bottle of this; the cork was only saturated about 1/4 of the way up; the nose was full of crystalline pure red fruits, tobacco, garrigue, and floral notes; there was definitely some mature notes, but the freshness of the fruit was impressive. The palate was perfectly balanced and showed great fruit and earth notes. Long finish that was all in harmony. This is the type of Chateauneuf I like to drink, but there seems to be less of it around now... (2017 views)
Tasted by Joelene on 8/9/2021 & rated 93 points: Amazing how lively this is, with good acidity and lots algo mouth puckering tannin. Nose of garrique, smoked red meat, lilacs, pork fat, tar and cherry pie. Palate of kirsch, apricot, topsoil, iron and blood. Dry cottonmouth finish, still has plenty of life left. Man I love Pegau, rustic yet complex and satisfying! (1705 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 8/8/2021 & rated 93 points: Nicely mature. (1815 views)
Tasted by TXRhoneRanger on 3/24/2021 & rated 94 points: Wonderfully complete now. Softer Grenache fruit. Savory classic Pegau CDP nose. I think this is at peak maturity, but no hurry to drink it soon. If stored right, then 4-5 years of solid life. Showing the ripe intensity of 1995. Side note, drinking seamlessly on day 2. Well done. (1828 views)
Tasted by DantheMan123 on 12/23/2020 & rated 92 points: Drink it! Its more than ready - what are you waiting for? Don’t miss this. (1681 views)
Tasted by VDLT Wine on 9/11/2020: Opened a few hours before and double decanted off sediment. Really super for a while. Rich, earthy with enduring and complex fruit and formidable tannins. A bit of brett added intrigue. The acid that has defined this vintage of Pegau was in balance. After an hour or so from serving it seemed to lose its vigor - maybe the mountain altitude because a number of other wines have done the same over the last couple of days. (1612 views)
Tasted by europat55 on 9/7/2020 & rated 92 points: Nose: B++/A- Palate: A- Tasted blind. Classic mature CdP. (1605 views)
Tasted by rayq on 5/1/2020 & rated 91 points: Hint of lift/spirit on the nose. Alcohol noticeable on the palate (feels more than 13.5%) Nice sweet aged fruit, tertiary phase. It's pretty much what I expected and it's an enjoyable aged Chateauneuf but let down by being a bit disjointed with that spikey alcohol note. (1893 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 2/24/2020 & rated 93 points: Drinking really well now. Silky, med. body, spices, garrigues, melted licorice, well-integrated, just touch of brett for complexity. :) My WOTN. Hedonists Meet-up at the Red Lion. (1798 views)
Tasted by no leashes on 1/17/2020 & rated 92 points: Still drinking beautifully, sweet red fruit, lavender and a hint of pepper. Paired with grilled marinated flank steaks and it was wonderful. (1571 views)
Tasted by I1bearup on 12/11/2019: Blood iron iodine strange all around but interesting. Palate was flat, a bit flabby, and thin. Not as aged as first bottle. But still not for me. (1548 views)
Tasted by jreynolds3 on 10/6/2019 & rated 92 points: Very nicely aged CdP. It was probably a bit on the downslope, but enjoyable nonetheless. (1831 views)
Tasted by I1bearup on 5/13/2019 & rated 89 points: A bit over the hill it seemed. Just getting into old CDP though so not a lot to go on. Will wait on the next bottle and decant for longer. (1788 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 2/17/2019 & rated 94 points: Chateauneuf and Hermitage: Rocknrollers bottle. Here is another example of a great old CDP. Pencil lead, fresh pepper, iodine and iron, red to black fruit. This was a great bottle. (2307 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 2/17/2019 & rated 95 points: Monthly Tasting Group: Older CDP's and Northern Rhones (P.S. Steak, Mpls): Dark red color. Excellent cork. PNP, drank a glass plus over 2 hours. Now hitting the trifecta with this spectacular trio along with the '94 Beaucastel and '89 Les Cailloux. Holy cow, this takes everything even a half step further for me. The Pegau adds to the complexity with iron, iodine, earthy with the slightest sense of funk, perfumed, garrigue, red cherry and berries, my word this glorious. The palate takes the nose and expands on it, another seamless beauty with great Provencal character, minerals, pretty red fruits, satin texture, really layered, anise, hints of dill and mint, a bit savory with a little roasted meat, wow - this is balanced and has very polished tannins. While this is in a great place, I would surmise that well stored bottles might go another 10 years. Loved it 95+pts to 96pts. (2523 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 1/5/2019 & rated 95 points: Clear bright, light red. Medium intense nose, leather , old furniture, roasted meat, dried cherries and spice. The nose reminds me of a slightly more savoury version of Tondonia. Delicious dry earthy red fruit flavours and a long dry finish.

I am 34 points more then Gilman on this one. (2203 views)

Domaine du Pégau is a beloved icon of traditionalism in Châteauneuf du Pape, crafting wines that dually epitomize the Châteauneuf style of the Southern Rhône while being unmistakably Pégau. Long owned by the Féraud family, the estate is run by the charming Laurence, a Parker Wine Advocate Wine Personality of the Year who was exceptionally well-schooled by her father Paul. Despite receiving six 100-point scores in less than 10 years, Domaine du Pégau is a down to earth specimen of Southern France hospitality.

Pégau produces three high-end Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées: the traditional Cuvée Reservée, the special Cuvée Laurence, and the incredible Cuvée da Capo (made from the best grapes in only the best years). These wines are aged in large old oak foudres for at least 18 months in the case of the Reservée, and much longer for Laurence and Capo.

Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate summarizes the house style as follows: “This superb estate fashions an old style, massive, unbelievably rich, rustic Châteauneuf du Pape. If you want to taste what the old style Châteauneuf du Pape of the forties, fifties, and early sixties tasted like, buy a bottle of Domaine du Pégau. They are rich, rustic, sometimes massive Châteauneuf du Papes made with no concession to modern-day tastes.” Furthermore, he continues “I have long been a huge fan of this estate, and have put my money where my mouth is, having purchased all of Pégau’s vintages since 1979.” Heady praise indeed from the world’s leading wine critic.

Domaine du Pégau’s wine have developed a cult-like following among savvy consumers, who adore their expressive style, unique personality and still-affordable prices for the quality and experience they deliver.

“There is a secret in the knowledge transmitted over generations.” — Laurence Féraud

Domaine du Pegau is run by Laurence Feraud and her father Paul.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
