Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 67 notes)

Tasted by rsbeck on 1/29/2010 & rated 90 points: After five hours of decanting, this wine knit together. Fascinating nose of raspberry pop tarts, cigar box, pencil shavings and savory herbs. Almost, but not quite as exciting on the tongue. Having recently tasted, to my palate, this bottle is a significant step down from the 1990 Pegau Reservee, but it still offers a lot of drinking pleasure and the acidic balance will make this a very good wine to pair with certain dishes. Though the wine shows some signs of development; bricking, some secondary flavors of age, I still believe this needs a few more years to resolve itself. I believe it has the stuffing necessary for improvement. I will probably wait at least a year before drinking another. (214 views)
Tasted by Richard Jennings on 12/31/2009 & rated 95 points: New Year's Eve 2009 Chez Christianne (Chez Christianne, San Francisco, CA): Dark red violet color with pale meniscus; berry, dried berry, brett, bark, mineral, charcoal, pepper nose; tasty, youthful, meaty, black fruit, charcoal palate; medium-plus finish 95+ pts. (481 views)
Tasted by matro on 11/17/2009 & rated 94 points: Fully mature. Slightly spicy on the palate, nice acidity, great food wine. Lots of cherry, smoke, some tobacco on the nose. Almost as good as the '98 I drank earlier this year - would be nice to try them side by side... (800 views)
 Tasted by costamalfitana on 11/8/2009 & rated 88 points: our last bottle;
all in all these bottles showed a lot of variance; on many occasions tasting tight, not revealing much on the nose; this one was ok but not showing its best. (796 views)
Tasted by Rick-again on 11/1/2009 & rated 91 points: lots of mature CdP flavors (904 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 10/17/2009 & rated 94 points: Sacred Cow is released into the wild (Restaurant X, Oklahoma, OK): WIML94+?

Tasted October 17, 2009 at an offline.

Garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of brown sugar, mixed florals, berries, saddlesoap and licorice. Good, solid flavors of berries, plums and reaspberries. Medium to bright acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium body. Right around the 2 hour mark the nose on this wine was absolutely stunning coming in at least at a WIML95+. Palate is just a hair behind right now so overall lets call it a WIML94+. (1013 views)
Tasted by bon vivant on 10/11/2009: Seems like a lot of bottle variance in this wine. The color was good and dark yet there was something off with this bottle, Dried fruit aromatics and Garigue but there was also a dirty component -could be a touch of Bret that if there was more fruit here may have added some charm. Overall this had austere grip - but died up and not very charming. Others commented on some VA on the nose. I would chalk this off as an off bottle, or maybe it's just seen better days? (989 views)
Tasted by ed-d on 10/2/2009 & rated 91 points: Pretty notes of caramel on the nose. Structured, dusty black fruit with a lot of grip. Very closed still. (671 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 9/23/2009: I think this is in its drinking window, and will not get better. Just a bit of stewed fruit and a little short on the finish - but overall a nice, well made wine - just not a great one. B+ (1125 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 9/18/2009: Sidste flaske. Topmoden og lækker, men lidt mere mineralitet og friskhed ville ikke skade. (1122 views)
Tasted by ldorf on 8/31/2009 & rated 96 points: What a bottle of wine. Decanted and let sit for 20 minutes and it opened beautifully and continued to open for the next hour. Still full and rich, dark color. Great nose and a full, long finish. (1151 views)
Tasted by markjanes on 8/25/2009 & rated 85 points: Drank with 95 Beaucastel... appears older with a very bricked out rim... low to moderate depth of color and moderate - extraction. On the nose are very tertiary, evolved aromas dominated by every dried herb you can imagine and cherry fruit. Certainly a whiff of cigar box from oak barrique use... no obvious Brett or sourness to the fruit. On the palate moderate acidity and a slightly firm, low to moderate breadth of a midpalate that transitions quite effortlessly into a slightly coarse and rustic, moderately ripe tannin finish... moderate - alcohol. A balanced wine but is just a bit on the firm side, good length at 45 + sec, good intensity of flavor and great aromatic complexity. Certainly a wine of finesse with average texture and a very clear expression of place and producer. This wine is certainly at the end of its peak drinking window and is a very evolved, aromatically complex, slightly course on the palate kind of wine. (1268 views)
Tasted by king-bing on 8/9/2009 flawed bottle: Just a bit off. Tannic and slightly bitter palate. (1399 views)
Tasted by Bin75 on 7/11/2009 & rated 91 points: Orange-red with slight browning at the rim, followed by a nose of kirsch, wet soil, blood, iron, and fully integrated tannins. Smooth and rustic, but I'd start drinking up 750's now adn over the next 4 years. (1480 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 5/15/2009: Medium red, somewhat cloudy, tawny edge. Very brief burst of leathery fruit, then predominantly powdered black licorice and herbs (garlic?). Again, on the palate, a transient whiff of sweetness, but this peels away quickly to show hard underlying tannins and the acidity of the vintage. OK now, but it strikes me as being near the end of pleasurable drinking. (1823 views)
Tasted by foodandwineblog on 4/21/2009 & rated 93 points: Decanted for sediment and poured into Riedel Vitis Riesling glassware. Subtle bricking- fantastic nose, cherry, rhubarb jam, spice, fully mature, minerals, cedar, finesse, clove, cherry finis... about 1 hour ago'95 Pegau Reserve- fantastic nose, cherry, rhubarb jam, spice, fully mature, minerals, cedar, smoke, finesse, clove, cherry finish- Very nice. (2047 views)
Tasted by Terkel on 2/7/2009 & rated 92 points: Pegau Reserve Vertical Tasting: Medium dark color, showing clear signs of maturing brown on the hue. Classic matured chateauneuf-du-pape nose with horse manure, oranges and a bit of petrol intermixed with sweet prunes. Similarly mature note on the palate, tobacco, rust, prunes, boiled plums, barnyard and petrol. Very sweet first on the taste stands in contrast to the dry finish. Fine length, but it seems the tannins will clearly outlive the fruit. (2228 views)
Tasted by Mrbuzz on 1/28/2009 & rated 89 points: Open in bottle for 2 hrs....first taste when open, it was showing quite a bit....leather, pepper, dusty dried tobacco. At dinner, it shut down. My glass might have been suspect though...I got a lot of must, some dirt, slight leather, not much pepper. As the night went on, I switched pours in another glass....It began to open a little...more pepper, cherries, smoked plum....I thought the acidity and tannins were still grippy.....might need even more time. Tasty when it came out...but not as good as other bottles I've had. (2294 views)
Tasted by Jwobkk on 12/31/2008 & rated 94 points: This wine evolved considerably during a two hour period. Initially it was very dirty tasting, with time it mellowed out and drank beautifully. Very complex with a long finish. (2250 views)
Tasted by costamalfitana on 12/26/2008 & rated 90 points: ligth red color, fine mature nose with impressions of leather and thyme; sweet taste,no tannins noticeable, attractive bottle of mature cndp; to be drunk; improves greatly with 1 hour in the decanter. (2243 views)
Tasted by mimik on 11/7/2008 & rated 95 points: Wine Guy Weekend Chez Doktas Take 2; 11/7/2008-11/8/2008 (Collingwood, Ontario): Wine Guy Weekend 2: Old saddle leather, bananas(yes, I smelled them), kirsch, smoke and some spicy cherries. More cherries and some clove and spices on the palate. Really enticing and unique. Second bottle of this wine and it was great to taste a decently aged CDP like Pegau. Long long finish. Tannins fully integrated but I could use a 1-2 hour decant. Can improve over the next 3-4 years. (2451 views)
Tasted by futronic on 11/7/2008 & rated 94 points: Wino Guys Weekend (WGW) #2; 11/7/2008-11/8/2008: Ruddy garnet colour. Aromas of worn saddle leather, kirsch, cinnamon, milk chocolate, Christmas cake/black forest cake, and starts to show a smokiness/burnt leaf note with time. Medium-full bodied, well-integrated tannins, with kirsch, cinnamon, leather, and spice. Great acidity. Moderate-long finish, ~40-45s, with kirsch and chocolate notes. Very tasty. Drink now-2013. 93-94 points. (1553 views)
Tasted by peblin on 10/30/2008: Domaine de Pègaü vertical tasting with Munskänkarna (Stockholms Vinkällare): Spicy nose with lots of love-or-hate horse dung and garrigue. Blood, iron, medium body with great balance and a long aftertaste. Great wine, but not my style. (2381 views)
Tasted by EhrlichDY on 10/12/2008: Very similar to others recent experiences. A little thin and disjointed on opening. Trademark hard candy and kirsch bouquet appeared after about an hour. This wine gained weight and sweetness with air. Enjoyable but not as easy to love as the 1998 or other vintages. (2320 views)
Tasted by Tree512 on 9/3/2008 & rated 91 points: Very reduced on opening, but blossomed after an hour. Still tannic but fully mature, lots of herbs and lots of fruit. Not quite balanced but very enjoyable and close to its peak. (2434 views)
