Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 70 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ID on 9/18/2022: Opened two bottles because the first one was corked and was discarded. As for the second bottle, on the first night it was unpleasant. Had a harsh, green pepper or grass aspect to it. But 24 hours later I found the bottle in the living room, having been left opened, with nearly a glassful still remaining in it; and over the 24 hours, left out like that, it had improved a lot. Became a pleasant, mellow wine. (1185 views)
Tasted by cephomer on 9/29/2021 & rated 92 points: Had 2 bottles over dinner with the LV crew last nite at a midtown Italian eatery (very good food, but I don't recall the name of the place on E.52).
Dark garnet color, no noticeable bricking. Pleasant nose of cherries and plums, with some violet and dust. There's still a good amount of red and black cherry fruit here, with leather and herbs. Pleasingly long and spicy finish. We popped n poured the first bottle, but decanted the 2nd--from which this wine def benefitted. Way WAY overpriced on this wine list, but very enjoyable BdM that still has some life ahead. (2298 views)
Tasted by grossie on 2/7/2021 & rated 90 points: Solid brunello but I was expecting a little more complexity or age or both. I think it might be a bit young. I thought the forward nature of 2007 might show more, ut think this is a bit closed. Next bottle 3 years. (if I remember to wait) (2783 views)
Tasted by CharlieHiker on 12/17/2020 & rated 94 points: Fabulous. Great structure on plalate and plenty of complexity on the nose. Red fruits showing plus aging aromas of leather, mushroom, cedar. Very long lovely finish. 18 points. (2 oz. sample) (2642 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 11/3/2020 flawed bottle: Italian wine swap session. Drank in Gabriel Standart. Tasted blind.
Corked. TCA wet newspaper. Sour fruit and caramel. (2988 views)
(2155 views)
Tasted by pgb67 on 2/18/2020 & rated 93 points: A very satisfying Brunello, especially on open and for the first hour or so. Masculine aromatics of polished leather, iron, and cherry. Palate showed sophisticated blended flavors of ripe cherry, dried dates, mocha, and soy. The wine is structured with adequate acidity and moderately grippy tannins. But the sense is that this is at peak and fading since the wine got decidedly more pedestrian over time, showing a more one-note cherry taste, so drink up. (2265 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 2/7/2020 & rated 92 points: Deep dark garnet in color with ever-so-slight clearing at the edges. Full, forward & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, blackcurrants & plums with overtones of earthy/dusty & floral notes of violets, spices, herbs, tobacco, leather, some tar, anise, iron, minerals & a hint of cedar in the background. Full bodied with very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, blackberries & plums with mushrooms, minerals, cocoa, herbs & spices. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present & at 13 years of age, it should hold onto this current stage of development for a few more years if cellared properly although any further development may be minimal. (1814 views)
Tasted by BHRH on 1/11/2020 & rated 89 points: Slightly brown edge with an interesting, mature note of caramel. Medium bodied and somewhat elegant, but missing distinctive varietal character. Maybe on the downside - beware! (1753 views)
Tasted by bugdoced on 4/19/2019 & rated 91 points: delicious elegant fruit with underlying blueberries
enough tannins to say years of life left and more integration has my mouth watering in anticipation (2283 views)
Tasted by KTelaak_Buffalo on 2/17/2019 & rated 95 points: Drinking fantastic. The bottle size (3.0) helped. Mild tannins, smooth. Good fruit. Everyone enjoyed. (2293 views)
Tasted by Milos on 11/24/2018 & rated 91 points: Mid red indicating moderate age. Forest floor with red fruit notes on the nose. Palate is balanced, with soft ripe tannins supporting the clean red fruit. Very classic Brunello. Drinking beautifully now but no need to rush. (2153 views)
Tasted by brasstab on 11/19/2018 & rated 93 points: Bright red fruit and elegant structure. Purchased at the winery in 2012. Still vibrant and alive. Opened it the Monday before Thanksgiving with the fam, who were with me in Tuscany. (1963 views)
Tasted by John McCabe on 1/22/2017 & rated 95 points: I was a bit taken aback by this. There is a dark, brooding backdrop along with a racy, acidic energy, some oak and forest floor. This is pretty fun and serious stuff. Captivating.

Doesn't hold up as well on the 2nd day. The bit if fruit and brightness got lost a bit. Still pleasant though. This is one to finish up on the first day - it has so much delicious vibrancy and energy. (4327 views)
 Tasted by clairenclarence on 12/17/2016 & rated 93 points: nose:plum,cherry,slight brett,.lots of redcurrant..smoky ash,iron,hint of chocolate.VA sign

palate:long finish.ripe tannins.black cherry.leather.sweet red liqourice finishing.has slight mineral to gve elegance n balance

conclusion:despite warmer vintage but somehow still able to display elegance here, highly commendable.definItely get better with more aging (3491 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 12/13/2016 & rated 91 points: Mini Brunello Night (Extra Space): Tasted blind. Poured into decanter and drank over 2.5 hours.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of red cherries, orange peel, slight smoke, bits of earth. Developing.
on the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), medium tannins, full body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of sour red cherries, red plums, bits of leather and earth emerging. Medium+ finish.
Very good quality. Elegant traditional Brunello. This bottle was much tighter than the other bottle I had earlier in the year. Will be interesting to try this again with another 2+ years of age. (3684 views)
Tasted by ozyloy on 12/13/2016: Clear, pale/medium ruby.
This bottle was not giving off much at first. The nose was muted, but with some air, there was tart red cherry, prune, redcurrant, and a hint of tobacco. Some synthetic notes also emerged. On the palate, acidity was still quite high, with a full body and medium tannins. Medium(+) finish.
Austere in style, and surprisingly tight. Would give 90-91 pts on this showing. Bottle variation perhaps? (3322 views)
Tasted by SMHalps on 12/4/2016 & rated 92 points: My only bottle, and I don't remember where I bought it, or why I only bought 1 bottle, but I wish I had bought more. Very enjoyable and balance wine. It paired very well with a number of different foods. It was the WOTN. (3171 views)
Tasted by Rechrom on 7/11/2016 & rated 91 points: In a good drinking window. (2072 views)
Tasted by Ilker Ozdemir on 4/19/2016 & rated 94 points: very complex and intense nose with dried cherry, tobacco, earth, licorice, leather and some dried flowers...Medium body.Silky texture.Soft and round.Medium level fine tannins and acidity. (2388 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 2/5/2016 & rated 91 points: Brunello Night (Extra Space): Tasted blind. Slow-oxed in bottle for 1 hour before drinking.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of classic sour red cherries, leather, earth. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), smooth medium tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of tart sour red cherries (in a good way), tomato, leather, earth. Long finish.
Very good quality. Classic traditional Brunello showing. Was unfortunately tasted in between 2 good Il Poggiones, so suffered the curse of mediocrity in comparison. Drink and enjoy over next 2-3 years.
Aged 3 years in traditional Slavonian oak barrels, and 1 year in bottle. (3415 views)
Tasted by Stavvy on 1/30/2016 & rated 94 points: Drinking nicely now. Intense red fruits, a slight sweetness. Tannins present but soft. (2486 views)
Tasted by Rechrom on 10/25/2015 & rated 93 points: Decanted two hours. Dark red, a bit of browning on the edge. Excellent nose of tart cherry and some leather. Full palate of more tart cherry and spices. Excellent with food, excellent on its own, in great balance with good acidity and structure, so can last. In a very good window right now. (2980 views)
Tasted by Castello della Gatta on 5/2/2015 & rated 92 points: A Good brunello overall. Didn't have time to decant it on first evening, so the second half of the bottle was better after night (closed in fridge). (2783 views)
Tasted by Texas Batard on 7/5/2014 & rated 94 points: The tannins on this wine that others have called "gripping", have integrated seamlessly, and this wine is drinking beautifully right now. Still maintains the cherry, mint, leather, vanilla, all balanced perfectly (4082 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
