Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.8 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 45 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by andtheodor on 11/28/2014 & rated 88 points: Blackberry, smoke, rosemary, grilled meat, mineral, old cellar nose. Dark berry, spicy, a touch barny, maybe a little hollow, finishes bitter. Mature and not going to get better but pretty tasty right now. (3567 views)
Tasted by Old_Winyards on 5/10/2014: Had the '01 Finca Sandoval last night, and it has gotten to a pretty nice place. Lots of blackberry, bing cherry, and plum flavors. The midpalate was initially a little hollow, but seemed to fill in during later glasses. Not oaky. A bit of barnyard and some gamey flavors (but not overwhelming, as my wife is averse to this beyond a certain threshold). Only real negative is that the tannins were a bit chalky (maybe sediment got stirred up?). Definite B+ wine (I'm a pretty tough grader, so this would put the wine solidly into the "would buy again" category).

Performed much better than another '01 FS which I had back in '09 (I would have called that one a B-).

Amused as hell by the CT notes which say this is over the hill. If that's the case, I'd blame poor storage. Otherwise, I'd speculate on the subconscious influence of the "2004 to 2009" Wine Spectator drinking window. (3891 views)
Tasted by gbauer on 3/8/2013: My last one of these, and frankly drinking as well or better than ever. No longer my style, really; but not over the top. Good fruit, but balanced -- maybe a hint of heat from the alcohol. Overall, very nice. (4208 views)
Tasted by GrandeSerataFuori on 3/8/2013 & rated 86 points: I barely remember this from a week ago. I think it was past it's prime but still had an interesting aspect to it. (4067 views)
Tasted by tarheel17 on 6/28/2012 & rated 89 points: STG does Syrah: sweeter and meaty next to the South African wine, it also felt just the teensiest bit flatter, but I enjoyed it. Definitely high on the 'delicious' factor, though not super complex. (5124 views)
Tasted by kirschke on 1/27/2012 & rated 55 points: Not a good wine, period. All 3 of us only finished half our glasses before pouring it out and emptying the decanter. (2245 views)
Tasted by David_T on 11/15/2011: Seems past its prime. Earthy nose and dark fruit flavors on the PnP, but deteriorated over an hour to be hollow with noticeable heat up front and lots of oak on the back end.

Update: day 2 this has rebounded slightly, served slightly chilled, with notes of dark fruit and chocolate, though still a bit hot and oaky. Would score in the low-mid-80s. (2027 views)
Tasted by VTCellarDweller on 9/4/2011 & rated 90 points: Very similar to my Aug. 2 bottle. This time, I gave it a little more decanter time and the flavors seemed a bit more delineated and the heat in the finish less pronounced. I'm not sure if the bottle was different or just my state of mind had improved. (2445 views)
Tasted by VTCellarDweller on 8/2/2011 & rated 89 points: From our cellar since release with two bottles tasted in prior years but no notes taken. This was decanted for 30 minutes and had a fairly heavy sediment buildup. Deep ruby color that seemed a little dull. The nose was the best part of this wine; blackberry and other dark fruits with a smokey mulled spice edge that was not at all timid.
The flavors were subdued plum and blackberry with an earthy undertone. But it just seemed a bit tired and lacking in focus or definition. Medium full weight with smooth round feel. Acidity was good and the tannins resolved but a little too much heat sticking out in the finish. Consumed over one hour with dinner, it didn't really fade or improve over that time. A fairly pleasant wine that was just past its prime. I will be sure to finish the remaining 4 bottles over this winter. Not a particularly good QPR. (2448 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 2/11/2011: A wine that I kept too long in the cellar. This has lost its structure and definition. Murky, amorphous fruit and palate. Little appeal. 93% Syrah, 7% Mourvedre, and should have been drunk years ago. (1724 views)
Tasted by gbauer on 12/4/2010: Inky dark purple. On the nose, still a little oak, but mostly sweet dark fruit. In the mouth, good acidity to balance a lot of fruit and a tiny bit of spice. Drinking very well now. (1945 views)
Tasted by Biglama on 2/11/2010 & rated 92 points: wijn die veel geeft, rijke rode kleur, heel aantrekkelijke neus met veel indrukken, kersenfruit, jammig, mooie dierlijke tonen, koffie, smaak is heerlijk zwoel en mooi rijp, zachte tannines, helemaal op dronk, mooi drinkbaar, volle wijn met ook wel wat diepgang, heel fraai (2259 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 12/12/2009 & rated 91 points: Bold nose is full of black fruits and a big smoked meat note. Palate is full bodied with rich, chewy black fruit. Herbs, meat and spice notes add complexity. A rich, low acid style that worked well with a spicy Moroccan lamb stew. (2207 views)
Tasted by caboychuck on 9/28/2009: Cassis, dark fruit and black berries on the nose. Round cassis, fruit on the palate backed by terrific acidity and structure. This stuff is terrific. (2333 views)
Tasted by dcclimb on 8/19/2009 & rated 90 points: Not an entirely convincing effort in my opinion.
Brownish garnet colour. Very closed nose at first; earthy pan grille, roasted meat, something vaguely vegetal after about an hour of decanting.
About the same impression on the palate.
Long but not terribly enjoyable finish.
Overall, I was hoping for a bright structured syrah in the Rhone style and found something dark and not altogether endearing. (2499 views)
Tasted by rmodak on 6/12/2009 & rated 91 points: This is drinking at peak now. Initially, there is a hint of brett that blows off. Round blackberry, roasted meat, herbs and earth. The balance between old world terroir with rich fruit is impressive. (2481 views)
Tasted by ToddR911 on 5/24/2009 & rated 89 points: Blackberries, cherries and dirt on the nose. Leather and charcoal once it opens up. Has some spiciness to it as well. Not overly complex but a nice wine. (2442 views)
Tasted by Old_Winyards on 5/13/2009: Didn't take notes, but while I thought this was good, it didn't really wow me, or have any special complexity. Plenty of fruit though, and enough tannins for several more years... possibly it could develop more with additional aging. B- (2527 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 4/11/2009 & rated 91 points: Full nose with a nice mix of black fruit, herbs, earth and licorice. Palate is medium-to-full bodied and full of black fruits. There is medium concentration and richness of fruit here - in contrast to many Cali and Aussie examples of syrah, giving it a more old world feel. Great balance and a medium-long spice-flavored finish. Seemingly at peak to my tastes. (2545 views)
Tasted by J2K on 7/13/2008 & rated 94 points: This was a little funky at first with some licorice on the nose. That blew off fairly quickly to full body tastes of charcoal, and earth earthy with a good mix of dark fruit. Good balance of acidity brought it all together. This was tasting best after about 4 or 5 hours. Kind of an old world new world mix and could last a few more years. (2742 views)
Tasted by jkramer65 on 7/12/2008 flawed bottle: huge bummer. i could tell this wine was fantastic. except it was corked. everything i did to try and remedy failed. very disappointed. (2779 views)
Tasted by Biglama on 5/26/2008 & rated 91 points: rijke rode kleur, mooie kruidige neus met peper en donker rood fruit, smaak is licht romig met veel concentratie en kracht, mooi gemaakte wijn die veel geeft (2870 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 5/1/2008 & rated 92 points: Drinking great, but will last for years. Big, fruity, viscous wine with a hint of roasted earth. (2833 views)
Tasted by ajr on 4/30/2008 & rated 90 points: stll young with moderate tannins but drinkable now. fabuluous wine. will wait about 1 yr. before trying another. (2896 views)
Tasted by ed-d on 12/21/2007 & rated 95 points: Intriguing nose of licorice, charcoal, blackberry & earth. Sweet blackberry fruit wrapped in evident, but sweet tannins. Absolutely delicious! A modern style, but not a fruit bomb. The back end had nice grip that worked stunningly with the grilled lamb chops for dinner. I wish I had more of this wine, as it is drinking well now & has the stuffing to keep for many more years. Nicely done! (3269 views)

(Finca Sandoval) A a nose of blueberries, grilled meats, exotic spice, soy sauce, maybe a hint of kerosene too. Great varietal character on the nose. Supple and silky with great balance. Pure fruit with great concentration and persistence. Dark and meaty flavors persist in the mouth long after swallowed. Thoroughly ripe tannins with ample sweet fruit. Great stuff.

Rockss and Fruit (4/25/2003)
(Finca Sandoval) What a great wine! 93% Syrah and 7% Mourvedre. Nice aromas of grilled meats, scorched earth, mineral, raspberry, chocolate. Beautifully balanced palate with elegant fruit, good amounts of glycerin and very juicy finish. This wine had great symmetry. So well put together.

Spain

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
