(1910 views) | | Tasted by John Fitz on 6/12/2019: CellarTracker says I should have drank this in 2016, let’s see if it is past it’s prime and ready to make salad dressing. Still pretty smooth in my book. (2334 views) | | Tasted by jicreixell on 5/2/2019 & rated 95 points: Deep Ruby red in appearance. Long less. Strong aromas of raspberry and cherry, with hints of vanilla. Low on the acidity, but and tannin content. Full bodied. Overall, balanced and enjoyable. This wine has definitely gotten better with age and it is in its prime. (2289 views) | | Tasted by walla_wallou on 9/22/2018 & rated 92 points: Really goooooooooooood! (2532 views) | | Tasted by Jkuryak on 1/12/2018 & rated 92 points: a big, unctuous, flavorful zin. A little surprised since its an '09. (3032 views) | | Tasted by Wine4Life on 12/10/2017 & rated 91 points: Lovely deep ruby, open black currant nose, nice big fruity body with great balance and a long finish. No reason to wait drink-up and enjoy. (2494 views) | | Tasted by dex8 on 1/31/2017 & rated 88 points: waited too long, past it's peak. Was better a year or so ago (2961 views) | | Tasted by Rickyd007 on 11/13/2016 & rated 92 points: Can't get enough, this wine rocks! (3173 views) | | Tasted by BordFan on 4/17/2016 & rated 88 points: Opened in spring 2016, probably about a year past its peak. Still plenty of fruit and chocolate notes, silky tannins but has gone a bit soft. Late opening showed very slight turn towards those caramel characteristics of a turn towards oxidation. This actually added a bit to the flavour spectrum, I'm guessing this wine won't last more than a day now that the bottle's been opened. (3491 views) | | Tasted by Jkuryak on 4/14/2016 & rated 93 points: delicious! full of flavor and fruit. great glass!! (2985 views) | | Tasted by carisua78 on 2/4/2016 & rated 92 points: Drinking well, consistent with my notes from 2014. (3155 views) | | Tasted by redbrix on 12/18/2015 & rated 93 points: Absolutely amazing! (2304 views) | | Tasted by Buhever on 6/14/2015 & rated 91 points: Full bodied with red and dark fruit including ripe cherry, and blackberry with some mild heat. More cab-like than most zins. Went great with a grilled burger topped with aged cheddar and horseradish. It's very good now and will probably good for another 3 to 5 years. (2821 views) | | Tasted by Saint-Exupéry on 11/30/2014 & rated 91 points: Dark purple with a black core. Very open, fruit forward nose of berry pie, chocolate, vanilla and some Zin spice. Full body, smooth tannins and creamy texture, maybe lacking a bit in the acidity department. A touch of heat in the otherwise very pleasant and fairly long finish. (2985 views) | | Tasted by Dblmilk1sugar on 8/6/2014: - Medium forming legs - Enjoyed on the deck with Jen during and after shrimp feta linguine. (3750 views) | | Tasted by Chriskrueger on 4/15/2014 & rated 90 points: Kinda jammy (3800 views) | | Tasted by carisua78 on 4/12/2014 & rated 91 points: Well balanced and silk finish. On the nose hints of caramel, dark chocolate. (3509 views) | | Tasted by CP4 on 2/14/2014 & rated 92 points: Very enjoyable zin. Well integrated and balanced smooth medium to long finish. (3381 views) | | Tasted by Wine4Life on 12/28/2013 & rated 90 points: Deep dark purple, quiet nose of black cherry, big bold taste, black currant, oak and earth. good balance considering the alcohol, long finish, drinking well but will cellar nicely for a few more years. (3066 views) | | Tasted by Chateau du Fey 1994 on 12/26/2013 & rated 89 points: - Violet color. It's somewhat balanced with a medium/full body. Juicy texture with a medium finish - Not really my style but good. Definitely fruit forward but still interesting. A little too much heat on the nose and finish. Read a lot of suggestions to pair turkey dinner with a zin and i must agree this worked well. Correct. (2540 views) | | Tasted by HenrikJ on 11/14/2013 & rated 88 points: A buttery aroma with inky fruit, coffee, violets, licorice, birch resin and red berries. Quite sweet on the palate with some slightly overripe currants. A slight acidity does a decent job with holding the wine together. This wine is not really up my alley, but for what it is it's very good. (2733 views) | | Tasted by RobbieC on 11/11/2013 & rated 91 points: Not for a deep thinker. Muted nose. It's a big, dark fruit wine in a simple straight forward package. Even though it's big and heavy, it's still smooth. Chocolate and blackberry flavors. (2463 views) | | Tasted by Lee Fining on 10/28/2013 & rated 90 points: Smooth, rich and a bit fruit forward. Well crafted on the elegant side of Zins (2425 views) | | Tasted by Miceri on 10/27/2013 & rated 94 points: Very dark red; intense young fruity nose, blueberry, hint of vanilla, slight alcohol burn; very smooth lovely chocolate-like, well balanced; a very good zinfandel (2355 views) | | Only displaying the 25 most recent notes - click to see all notes for this wine... |
| Caymus Producer website 2009 Caymus ZinfandelAlthough Caymus Vineyards is best known for Cabernet Sauvignon, the Wagner family also produces a small amount of Zinfandel, which was a favorite of Caymus' Charlie Wagner. In many ways, Zinfandel is a quintessential California wine. It was one of the early varieties to be planted in Northern California by immigrants from Europe. Limited production.
About This Wine: We get our grapes from some exceptional vineyards in the Napa Valley. Our primary site is Butala Vineyard in St. Helena, where brothers Al and Ernie Butala grow old, crown-pruned vines on highly-graveled soil. Also included in the blend is some Petite Sirah, a traditional blending partner to Zinfandel. The wine lots were aged separately in a combination of French barrels, over 70 percent of them seasoned rather than new to maintain the dominance of the fruit. Wine Profile: Vintage: 2009 Wine Type: Red Wine Varietal: Zinfandel Alcohol %: 15.5 Tasting Notes:
A deep, purplish-red color, this vintage offers a rich raspberry aroma which includes ripeness and rustic qualities. Abundant black cherry and plum are full, forward and richly-flavored, with the zinfandel’s high acidity balanced by fruit. Winemaker Notes: Chuck Wagner Food Pairing: BBQ Short Ribs
Zinfandel ZAP: Zinfandel Advocates & Producers | Varietal character (Appellation America) | Wikipedia-ZinfandelUSAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Napa Valley Napa Valley Wineries and Wine (Napa Valley Vintners)Napa ValleySt. Helena |
