Community Tasting Notes (average 91.2 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 61 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Bonesetter on 11/10/2023 & rated 90 points: Clear. Light brown/red colour. Classic nebbiolo nose. Tannins have softened, now has Turkish delight, sweet cherries and charcoal on the palate. (978 views)
Tasted by acyso on 8/16/2023: Dinner at Chengdu Impression (Chicago, IL): Hard to get a read on this tonight with so much riesling, and nebbiolo isn't exactly a good pairing with Sichuan food either. Comes off with high alcohol and a really disjoint character (and I tried to clear out my palate as best I could). Now this has always been the perennial dog in the Produttori lineup, but I couldn't really distinguish whether it was that playing out again tonight. (1994 views)

Tasted by dkstar1 on 8/26/2022 & rated 91 points: This still has plenty of time to develop but starting to drink better than it did 2 years ago. Needs plenty of air (like 6 hours) if opening now. (2049 views)
Tasted by NiklasT on 7/2/2022 & rated 94 points: Fantastic nebbiolo after 4 hours in decanter. Head and shoulder ahead of 2005 Mortet Gevrey village with mature notes of leather and liquirice with beutiful sour-sweet cherries. For sure more development and tertiary notes to wait for but really delivered on all cylinders this evenening. WOTN. (1005 views)
Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 5/31/2022 & rated 92 points: got better and better with time (decanted 2.5 hours ahead, then drank over 2.5 hours more)... this was really tannic on the pnp but they receded with aeration... red / dark red fruit with high acidity at first but that also mellowed and allowed the body to come through... very nice in the end... would suggest 5 hours of air for now, or wait 5-7 years as I think this will improve for at least that long... have four left so hope I drink at least one in 2035 or later... made for the long haul (1950 views)
Tasted by Winevestor on 2/17/2022 & rated 92 points: Decanted this puppy for 2 hours. Then put half back in the bottle. It was still great 2 days later. Needless to say this although drinking well now, will continue to mature and has a long life left. Not even starting to brick yet. Leather on the nose. Plum, ripe cherry with a good amount of fruit in the mouth. Medium body and long finish. Really lovely wine. The QPR on these Produttori is just wonderful. (2143 views)
Tasted by gbejjani on 11/14/2021 & rated 92 points: This 50-family cooperative makes some of the finest Barbarescos, certainly the Riservas, and certainly for the money! Still tightly wound, delivering hints of what is in store from within its tannic envelope. Classy and tantalizing; if you can't wait 5 years, at least open it 8 hrs ahead :)

Tasted by mclanew on 11/12/2021 & rated 92 points: Decanted two hours. Could have used probably another hour or two. Pretty floral nose with a little bit of herbs mixed in. The palate is medium to full bodied, a little round, showing plum, cherry, spice cake and tar. Quite good. Still has a way to go - guessing 10 to 15 years. (2051 views)
Tasted by bacchusnyon on 10/1/2021 & rated 90 points: after a 2 hour decant, lovely round soft tannins, almost chocolate notes, with dried cherries and fig. Very nice - sorry some people had bad bottle experiences; it was definitely a good quality/price Barbaresco if one is patient (1965 views)
Tasted by chefdilletante on 8/21/2021: Heat damaged. (1894 views)
Tasted by Zoekerdutch on 8/21/2021 & rated 91 points: Appearance
Medium intensity, ruby colour.

Nose
Medium intensity, primary aromas floral (roses?), and prominent red fruit, cherry, kirsch liquor, and some spice, hint of dried herbs, lavender. Tertiary sensations include earth.

Palate
Dry, with high acidity, soft medium tannins, high alcohol and medium bodied. Flavour intensity becomes more than on the nose, pronounced. Red fruit, prominent sour cherry notes, some plum. Also some spiciness, pepper. Some cedar, wood impressions, cloves, maybe some earth-like tertiary aromas. Long finish.

Conclusions
A well balanced wine, with well identifiable characteristics, complexity and a long finish. Overall an excellent wine, which should go well with a range of savoury foods, and also very nice to drink on its own. This wine will keep for many years to come and may improve further. (1944 views)
Tasted by HowardNZ on 8/7/2021 & rated 93 points: Opened with the 2008 Paje to see how a couple of the backward 2008 Riservas - compared with the relatively more accessible 2007, 2009 or 2011 Riservas for example - are tracking. The answer is - with a couple of hours of air and even better on the second evening - very well. To drink with food. More red fruited and floral than the Paje, particularly on the nose. Plenty of fruit volume and power. Plums, raspberries and cherries on the mouth. Quite primary, rich but elegant mainly red fruit. Persistent acids and powerful yet smooth tannins. It’ll no doubt improve, and open more, over the next 5+ years, but more than drinkable now. (2135 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 3/27/2021 flawed bottle: Too hard for current drinking when first opened, so recorked and set aside. Two days later--pruney, nasty. Third one of a set of signed bottles with various degrees of 'cooked' that were purchased direct from the winemaker when on a North American tour about ten years ago. (2231 views)
Tasted by norsktorsk on 1/10/2021 & rated 92 points: I didn't read relative to drinking windows before opening. This is young and I would wait another 5 years. (2330 views)
Tasted by Redback on 8/15/2020: Very enjoyable. (2555 views)
Tasted by elyaz on 2/18/2020 & rated 92 points: Apr 2018, not blind, 91

Mar 2018, Tasted blind with porcini & truffle ravioli in butter sauce w/ sage, thyme, also prosciutto, cheese. Open for 1h at beginning, 2h at end. The wines were inside and warmed up a bunch, probably room temp at drinking time. N: deep and rich, black fruit, herb, earth / fruit + shade. P: integrated, balanced, low tannin, coffee? / herbal, complex, some fruit, blackberry, soft. 91

Mar 2018, Tasted blind with grilled pork chop, broccoli, onion, bread. Opened at 3:15, tasted 5:45-7:00. N: herbal, dark. P: herby, dark cherry, med tannin, juicy / P: tannin+. 92

Mar 2018, Tasted blind with mushroom & barley soup, bread, salad. Then later with Tenuta al Barolo cheese. Wines poured at 4pm, tasted 6-8pm. N: clear, black cherry, dark fruit / cool, anise, mint, tar / P: silky & polished, dark fruit, little tannin, good acid / least tannic up front, all on back / complex, dark, sour dark cherry / herbal, drying tannin / wow, herbal, cool earth, cherry. 93 (3201 views)
Tasted by acyso on 9/19/2019 & rated 90 points: HDH auction at Spiaggia; 9/19/2019-9/21/2019 (Chicago, IL): #10601. Stunning nose here, with slightly crunchy red fruit. The palate is still clamped a little tight with a moderate bitter edge because of the intense tannins. Nonetheless, this is incredibly aromatic and expressive on the nose and attack, and it's just a matter of aging this appropriately now (15 years at least?). (4328 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 8/16/2019: I know that everyone seems to love these wines and for some reason I find them always solid, but not truly great. This was opened 1.5 hours before pouring and spent an hour in the decanter. It's black cherry and mouth coating tannins and a kindof dark crispness to it. It seems to be missing just a bit of the je ne sais quoi to it but good for the price point. (3314 views)
Tasted by OldKingBalthazar on 5/3/2019: Any year that Produttori bottles the single vineyard riservas is a treat and this one is no exception. From a cooler vintage, this one is a decade into its life and still is very much about aroma and structure. 2nd bottle of this vintage for me. Decanted and drunk over a couple of hours. Very dark. It showed heavy tar and anise on nose pretty much the entire time in the decanter. On the palate, notes of muted red fruit, spearmint and licorice developed with air. The fruit component never really completely developed. The finish was pretty tannic, somewhat fruitless and relatively short. Good bottle of wine and enjoyable but I am sure more cellaring (or a couple more hours in the decanter) will make this a better drinking Barbaresco. (3243 views)
Tasted by popopdrops on 4/21/2019 & rated 90 points: Dekantert. Ekstremt tilgjengelig og imøtekommende. (3037 views)
Tasted by phil the agony on 3/20/2019 & rated 91 points: Semble faire plus vieux.Sur les fruits sêchés plus que sur la pûreté du fruit.
Moins d'éclat mais très beau quand même.Beaucoup de structure.

Tasted by Nutty08 on 12/26/2018 & rated 92 points: Only given a few hours air and that wasn’t enough. A little shrill. Shows a little tar, some dried fruit. Got better with air. Still some very dry tannin. Still needs some time but give it plenty of air (>4hrs) and it’s enjoyable now. (2758 views)
Tasted by mauropallido on 10/4/2018 & rated 95 points: Barbaresco semplicemente meraviglioso.
(3239 views)
Tasted by rmalloy on 3/16/2018: Intense. Balsamic and tannic. Aromatically closed. Needs time. (3683 views)

Produttori del Barbaresco

O ok just

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
