Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.1 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 20 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by AMC Eagle on 4/3/2018 & rated 92 points: Pnp through a vinturri. Medium purple in appearance; nose of red licorice and spice box with some dusty raspberries and black peppers. On the palate, there are some sour black plums, tarty cherries, and black peppers; some espresso at the end. Some tannins still remain; medium bodied with a medium finish. Opened up nicely after some more air. Last tasted September 2014. 91-92 pts. (1703 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 12/5/2016 & rated 90 points: Similar to last year. Loads of white and black pepper and a little mocha mixed in. Purple fruit on the palate with rather heavy winemaking giving this an rather lazy palate--though tasty enough. Moderate finish. Nice mid-week wine. (2315 views)
Tasted by RajivAyyangar on 3/8/2016 & rated 88 points: Northern Rhone with Jordan Mackay (SF Wine Center): Medium ruby to a red rim.
Reductive nose, hints of burnt toast (20% new oak, 40% 1-year, 40% 2-year) - holds the oak well. Black pepper, white pepper, underripe green olive, tart blackberry, rosemary, herbs-du-provence. Lean and aggressive acid.
Medium body, moderate plus alcohol - 13.5%? (correct), medium plus acid - strong, medium tannins.

Tasted by JulieFerguson on 11/17/2015 & rated 84 points: First glass very nice. Smooth and well balanced. Looking forward to the next bottle. Hoping it ages well. (2639 views)
Tasted by Lavan79 on 9/6/2015 & rated 91 points: nose is big with dark cherries, earth & green tomatoes
palate is full with very well integrated acidity & long spicy finish
defiantly a high class & well made syrah
not overpowering, classy & takes time to open up
a little young & will get better in the next 3-6 years (2296 views)
Tasted by rlove on 4/19/2015 & rated 92 points: Allegedly 100% Serine (an ancestor of Syrah). Exotic nose of black tea and white pepper. White pepper in the mouth with a finish of dark fruit. Likely been drinking well for some years; drink in the next two. (1835 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 3/30/2015 & rated 90 points: Importer tasting: According to the fact sheet the wine is made of 100% Serine (which is ancient Syrah) and not destemmed. The wine gets 20% new oak. The result is a classical wine with that typical Northern Rhone bouquet with minerals, leather and meaty impressions. Good garrigue and red and black berries and cherries as well. Good fresh acidity as well as a touch of sweetness, pleasant tannin. An elegant and beautiful wine. Early maturity now. (2508 views)
Tasted by Barolo Drunkard on 3/13/2015 & rated 92 points: This Saint- Joseph by Chateau de Saint Cosme is made with 100% Sérine, an ancient clone of Syrah grape, originating from the Northern Rhône (some people think it´s a grape of it`s own, rather than clone). Some also claim that Sérine has actually more complexity, and even more pronounced "Northern Rhône Syrah typicity" of smoke, pepper, olives, bacon fat etc. than regular Syrah. Well, this wine certainly doesn`t debunk that claim.
Wine is aged in 20% new oak – 40% in one year old barrels – 40% in two years old barrels.
Nice, quite transparent, ruby red color.
Not super strong, but inviting bouqet; ripe strawberries, plums, smoke, a bit of oak(that faded away pretty fast), vanilla and black pepper.
On the palate wine feels very fresh, with strawberries, boysenberries, a bit af gaminess, and a good touch of pepper. Has also a strong smokey and savory characters, which is highly delicious. Good acidity, and polished tannins. Alcohol is totally hidden. Medium to long aftertaste of strawberries, smoke and a total white and black pepper galore, almost like a pepper bomb explosion.
Not an easy wine to understand maybe, even feels at first a bit introvert. But It`s a wine that grows on you slowly, and at the end you`re totally hooked, maybe like the Northern Rhône as a wine region in general. Excellent and pure Northern Rhône Syrah(or Sérine) typicity. Elegant, and classical wine, which is not trying too hard. Though, I must say that this has all the elements of being even a much greater wine, and with just a little more umpf(better vintage? ageing?) it could be just that. Nevertheless an absolutely beautiful wine.

Tasted by Tetherton on 2/22/2015 & rated 90 points: Decanted the wine for 30 minutes prior to drinking. On opening, there was lots of spice, and some wet wood on the nose. The wood aroma faded quickly. The wine was filled with dark fruit and some pepper. After an hour, the wine had opened and was very enjoyable. (1052 views)
Tasted by S_stas on 1/29/2015 & rated 90 points: This is a very nicely styled vintage for the cosme St. Joe. Highly recommended for the price. (972 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 1/11/2015 & rated 90 points: Lots of white pepper on the nose, to the point it was almost off putting. But a touch animal savagery made it quite interesting. Fine palate, with a bit of angular acidity that softened with time. Finished fresh, bright, and adding some smoke. Great for the price. Drink or hold medium term. (898 views)
Tasted by AMC Eagle on 9/28/2014 & rated 92 points: Vinturied into a decanter for 90 minutes. Ruby-purple in colour; nose of black and red liquorice, some blackberries, and a hint of rose petals. Tarty black peppers, ripe red plums, and some dark red fruits along with raspberries on the palate. The tannins are still present in the front palate but fades pretty quickly. Medium bodied with a medium finish. (1008 views)
Tasted by RyanWu on 1/22/2014 & rated 87 points: It's made from 100% Serine (ancient syrah). Decanted for one hour, pepper smell flies out the current forest. This complex nose has ripen berries for everybody and pepper for wine experts, what a two bird wine. On the palate, pepper flavor dominants the whole mouth, but fades away quickly. One of the disadvantage is that there is not too much tannin to hold the lasting, so I will drink it in next 2 years. It seems like that it is not required to have bottle age to resolve and integrate all flavors. By the way, it's a little bit sour, so the texture is much more like tomato juice. If there is a possible improvement for this wine, I will definitely say tannin. I really hope this alluring wine could be more chewy. (1413 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.
