Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.4 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 180 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by AMC Eagle on 3/10/2024 & rated 91 points: Pnp and served chilled. Medium+ gold-amber in colour. Nose of liquid peaches, apricots, a touch of honey with some lychees. On the palate, there are some sweet apricots with some burnt creme brulee and a bit of honey. Medium bodied with a medium+ finish. Was expecting more out of this since my last tasting of August 2016. Pretty good nonetheless. (456 views)
Tasted by rmh66 on 10/15/2023 & rated 88 points: Light-ish but fun nose of pineapple, apricot, Japanese melon candy, butterscotch, table grapes, hay, sultanas, caramel, and a hint of vegetation. Dried apricot, dried pineapple, caramel, hay, honey, and earth on the palate. Light-ish acidity, med-long but mellow finish. Delicious (of course). I liked this wine young, and I like it now. It's not a powerful or profound Sauternes, so it's less a wine to showcase on its own, than a wine to pair with a dessert. (789 views)
Tasted by super007 on 8/6/2023 & rated 88 points: This was less nectar, syrupy than I prefer some of my sweet wines, but a good wine. Started to shift to more brandy or sherry type notes, so was brighter in expression than dense and sweet. (897 views)
Tasted by Margaux Bro on 3/27/2023 & rated 93 points: Very solid offering (1325 views)
Tasted by eb1202 on 12/26/2022 & rated 90 points: Exotic notes of apricot and ripe melon on the nose. The acid is still there but is slowly weakening. Still a nice balance between sweetness and acidity. On the palate pineapple, apricot, melon, caramel. Very nice to drink now. (1429 views)
Tasted by Decanting Queen on 11/12/2022 & rated 89 points: I am not an expert on sweet wines so I didn’t pick up many nuances and was more focused on the red wine discussion at the table. This was just fine as an accompaniment to a pear and almond tart. Apricot nectar and sweet honey, dark golden color. In its window with I am sure plenty more years to go… (2703 views)
Tasted by ploher on 8/25/2022: Quite an amazing nose here with nuts, ripe, tropical fruit and honey, also something dark and stony. The palate can't quite keep up with that in my opinion. It's borderline sweet missing some acidity and is a tad short on the finish. But no question that this is super delicious and perfect to drink now. 17/20. (1339 views)
Tasted by Jay701 on 6/29/2022 & rated 92 points: Picnic with Nick and Anne and just Jay. Fabulous wine. (1008 views)
Tasted by Leinike on 11/27/2021 & rated 88 points: Strong alcohol. Needs to sit for much longer time. (1700 views)
Tasted by brianngibson on 7/10/2021 & rated 91 points: Apricot, melon. Acidity has faded and does not have the pineapple notes observed in prior bottle 8 years previous. Feel like this is mature and ready. May have peaked. No doubt it will continue to evolve, but hard to expect improvement, just continued evolution. I found this to be reasonably balanced between savory and sweet. (1977 views)
Tasted by Wine_Poobah on 2/20/2021 & rated 96 points: Intense orange and candy aromas — very tropical — with notes of mango, pineapple, peach and dried flowers. Sweet, dried peach flavor with notes of butterfinger / butterscotch. Well balanced, but leans sweet (not syrupy, but close). Very complex, and very good. Drink or hold. (2266 views)
Tasted by Rossodio on 10/24/2020 & rated 90 points: This was my last bottle of the 3 I purchased about 15 years ago. Fully evolved secondary layers of unctuous marzipan, butterscotch, and pineapple. Acidity is there, but not quite enough to balance out the richness here. Finishes nicely. For the price I paid back then, a killer wine. Drink now, as I doubt would get any better than it is, but could absolutely hold for another 5 years or more with perhaps some additional development. (2452 views)
Tasted by jayw on 2/17/2020: OK, but not enough acidity to cut through the cloying sweetness. The nose gives a teasing hint of what this wine might have been with better balance. (2865 views)
 Tasted by cos65 on 1/10/2020: From 375
Sweet and honeyed and very easy to like if not overly complex. This was in great shape.
Drink or hold (2302 views)
Tasted by terry j on 9/9/2019 & rated 88 points: Simple, pleasant dessert wine. Not showing any of the more profound qualities of Sauternes: mild and simple bouquet, soft and short on the palate. Not really meriting the aging given to it.
Nowhere to go ... drink now. (2283 views)
Tasted by bubnos on 4/30/2019 flawed bottle: Dessert Flight: Still barely drinkable, but too oxidized to score properly. (2597 views)
Tasted by OneForTheStairs on 12/25/2018: Very sugary. (2193 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 12/1/2018 & rated 87 points: Kreuzritter - Vol. 3: Tasted blind. The aromatic profile is good but this is just too sweet and fat for my taste and in my opinion, has not enough acidity to improve further.

TN: Lots of boytritis, crème brulée, apricots and quince with hints of white tea. Thick, cloying and fat. The balance here is not ideal.

Decanting. PnPed. Not sure if a decant would change anything. (2607 views)
Tasted by jkoenen on 8/14/2018 & rated 93 points: Liked this one quite a bit more than the critics did...!
It's voluptuous and complex, great prutiy and balance. Very well defined and full of detail.
Beautiful! (2240 views)
Tasted by jmoore431 on 7/13/2018 & rated 92 points: Deep golden; classic nose of apricot and melon with acidity you can actually smell; nice tension of that acid keeping the rich, unctuous sweetness in balance. Richly viscous and just a bit of heady alcohol on the finish. (2012 views)
Tasted by Heynetty on 6/11/2018: Wine Dojo - Week 13 - A Sticky Situation!!! (Annette's Place): Tasted Blind

A: Medium to deep amber
N: Ginger, SAFFRON, honey, caramel, sultanas, very ripe apricot. Missing a subtle high note to me. Seems developing and medium intensity
P: Medium sweet, medium acid (others got higher acid but i didn't), full body, medium (+) intensity and finish. 14% abv
C: $50/bottle. Very Good Quality but i would like more acidity for balance. Not sure that i would keep this more than 5 years because that acidity should be higher. 2003 was a HEATWAVE year which would account for the lower acidity.

GUESSES:
Guessed this was Sauternes through process of elimination. (2162 views)
Tasted by Double-A on 3/20/2018 & rated 93 points: Deep golden amber colour. Dried apricot and apple with honey, spice and earth notes. Very flavourful, medium sweet palate with balanced acidity and a long complex, minerally finish.
4.5/5 (2064 views)
Tasted by cannym on 12/31/2017 & rated 91 points: Light gold, shining clear. Rich and sweet of course but much more finesse than I anticipated. Good acidity for the vintage. Loads of stone fruit like apricot, barley sugar, lemon, floral honey. Orange marmalade. Good length too. Lovely wine. (2015 views)
Tasted by Winedog1 on 11/23/2017 & rated 92 points: Tan in color. (1910 views)
Tasted by NewFrenchClaret on 5/9/2017 & rated 93 points: This is a fantastic effort for the vintage. Great concentration and botrytis as you would expect in this vintage, but with far more acidity than its contemporaries, which gives it the verve they lack.

The heat of the vintage isn't invisible of course- the alcohol is noticeable, and though it settles down after a day or so in the fridge, there's still some heat on the nose. I don't find it especially intrusive though, and it's far more welcome than the flabby, unfocused profile of the other 2003's I've tasted. (2874 views)

Bordeaux Wine Guide

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Sauternes

– Read more about the 1855 Sauternes Barsac Classification

Forty kilometres south of Bordeaux, Sauternes is an AOC that includes together 5 communes, including Barsac. For centuries, humans have been patiently learning to master this region's climate, soils and grape varieties. But Mother Nature did a good job laying the foundation. The Sauternes terroir is distinguished by a geological predisposition to gravel and pebbles that cover limestone streaked with veins of clay. In the communes of Fargues and Sauternes, a layer of hardpan (iron-oxide cemented sand) in which vines flourish can be found. The vineyards at the highest elevations and farthest from the river have the best terroirs and produce the majority of the Crus Classés, including the monumental Château Yquem.Sauternes wines are made from Sémillon (80% of vines planted) and Sauvignon (15%) grapes. A bit of Muscadelle occasionally is used to give the wines an untamed touch. Sauternes have an "aged gold" colour that is denser and darker than other dessert wines. When they age, they develop a stunning amber colour. The nose has aromas of flowers and fruit that melt together to create a bouquet of remarkable complexity and balance. The primary aromas include almond, quince, mango, pineapple, stewed peach, dried apricot and passion fruit. There are also floral notes, with touches of linden, acacia, mimosa and honeysuckle. And as is typical with Sémillon, there are also notes of beeswax, almond and hazelnut. In the mouth, Sauternes wines have a powerful style that is viscous but extremely elegant. Its strong sweetness is captivating. Finally, its aromatic finish is something that simply must be experienced.

2013 Vintage Notes:
"the extractive ratios in th[is] year are in the phenomenal range and there's ripeness/botrytis to cover two treks around the globe [...] so appealing is the immediacy of the wines. Many can be enjoyed now for their sheer joy and delicious nature. [Some] should also age" - Jon Rimmerman

2014 Vintage Notes:
"a golden vintage for Sauternes. It may not have the depth or weight of 2010, but it has some of the richness. What has set 2014 apart is the intense lime and lemon flavors that cut into any overblown cloying character and allow both the fruit and the honeyed noble rot to sing." - Wine Enthusiast
