Community Tasting Notes (average 90.2 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 104 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by McMalbec on 2/12/2019: Last bottle. As I noted in a prior note, these SB's got lost in my cellar. Interestly, this bottle was better than that bottle. Nevertheless, don't expect too much at this point. (1260 views)
Tasted by McMalbec on 10/13/2018: Held this too long- it has lost its acidity. (1177 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 8/17/2015 & rated 89 points: Opened by tlv. Aromas of grass, lime zest and grapefruit. Gooseberry, citrus and lemongrass on the palate with tart acidity. Very nice. (2782 views)
Tasted by Sonoma-W on 8/8/2015 & rated 87 points: Somewhat sweeter than expected. No grassiness. (1802 views)
Tasted by spidersva on 5/25/2015 & rated 92 points: Really, really yummy. Headed toward creamy - dare I say a little bit Chardonnay-ee... (2592 views)
Tasted by David_T on 12/8/2014: Opened one in December just because. It matches my note from its release just a bit less freshness. I have one bottle left and will likely drink it next summer. Refreshing acidity. (2576 views)
Tasted by dutradan@msn.com on 11/18/2014 & rated 91 points: Superb sav blanc . enjoyed with pupus, different cheeses before moving on to steak and big reds. Awesome crisp, grapefruit, citrus, with a soft side if you look for it. 8 tasted, 8 commented and 8 people gave a big thumbs up. (2529 views)
Tasted by rdf58 on 10/28/2014 & rated 91 points: Light gold color. Lime-citrus flavors give way to peach with some air. Fairly rich, almost chardonnay-like mouthfeel. I prefer the 2012 Kick Ranch to the 2013 counterpart. (2204 views)
Tasted by Acohen on 10/20/2014 & rated 89 points: Slightly larger style of SB with some oak and mouthfeel. Had some grassiness and citrus (1725 views)
Tasted by UofM on 9/3/2014 & rated 89 points: I agree with most recent tasting notes. This doesn't drink like a Sav Blanc. Much more like a Chard and everone agreed. I won't take points away, but I will be sure to consider that next time I have this bottling. (1861 views)
Tasted by Tudz Drkl on 8/12/2014 & rated 87 points: This was a good wine that tasted great but loses points for not tasting very Sauv Blanc. It was rich and tart with some mineral characteristics and expressive fruit that seemed more orchard and less tropical. It stood up well to the meals we had with it. (1697 views)
Tasted by Brian Love on 7/2/2014 & rated 93 points: Excellent rich wine but not over the top. (1739 views)
Tasted by cobbpa on 6/14/2014 & rated 91 points: Muscular texture & weight, but the floral/guava/melon tones create a delicate side. An intriguing wine. (1508 views)
Tasted by twelch on 6/6/2014 & rated 90 points: Much better than the last bottle. Bright acidity with a crisp citrus and tropical fruit nose and palate. A nice streak of minerality pulsed thru this bottle as well. (1784 views)
Tasted by thelostverse on 5/20/2014 & rated 91 points: This has improved since the last bottle opened. Still has the creamy citrus notes, but there seems to be more balance and depth. Just lovely. (1901 views)
Tasted by lvjohn on 4/11/2014 & rated 92 points: The last of three bottles and certainly the best. This was much more complex and intriguing the the other two. Solid but subtle core of citrus, mango, vanilla, and tropical fruit that evolves over time. No impurities, off flavors, or distractions in this honey. (1803 views)
Tasted by riversedge on 3/17/2014 & rated 94 points: Flowers, citrus and a bit of honey. This is not a thin and weak sav blanc. Love this wine. (1898 views)
Tasted by rdf58 on 2/13/2014 & rated 91 points: Nice grapefruit aromas followed by lots of citrus-lime zest flavors and floral notes. Some minerality at the core and slightly tart acidity. Excellent edition of Becrock's SB. (1824 views)
Tasted by fdub on 2/6/2014 & rated 90 points: Crisp clean and refreshing. Shows a lot better balance than other vintages. Some were a bit flabby on the palate. This has great verve and cut to accompany the pear and tropical fruit notes. (1890 views)
Tasted by drdebs on 1/22/2014 & rated 90 points: Very nice SB. Agree with previous taster who mentioned the flowery notes and the plush texture. This is a weighty SB, more substantial then many, with loads of presence in the white grapefruit, pear, flowers, and full mouthfeel. (1956 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 1/7/2014 & rated 91 points: Dinner at Dino's (Dino's - Washington, DC): Another great bottle. This is easily one of my favorite California Sauvignon Blancs. Flowers, sweet herbs, guava and lime on the nose. I love the crisp acid and the plush texture. Guava, apricot and sour patch kids mix with mineral, white flowers and honey. The peanut and hazelnut notes from the oak and acacia wood are well-integrated and nuanced. Delicious stuff, this won over everyone at dinner. Sad to say it's my last bottle. (2109 views)
Tasted by ksmith on 11/18/2013 & rated 90 points: Pale yellow, grapefruit on the nose. Acid, melon and lemon on the palate. Enjoyable, fruity and food friendly SB. Best if you are not that wild about NZ SB. (2112 views)
Tasted by ksmith on 11/6/2013 & rated 91 points: Pale gold color. Nose of pears and melon. Nor your usual NZ SB. Much more a citrus and mineral driven white. This is good for drinking now, no reason to wait. (1913 views)
Tasted by diananm on 10/24/2013 & rated 90 points: Finally enjoyed our 4th bottle of this wine. Don't know if it takes a while to settle after warm weather shipping, or just needs some time in bottle. Either way, high acidity resolved and could taste some fruit and floral notes. Nice with lemon milk chicken! (2283 views)
Tasted by Dagalaifus on 10/8/2013 & rated 91 points: This wine is pale straw in the glass with a marvelous nose of pear. On the palate, citrus, melon, honey, and more subtle notes of toasted oak, vanilla and flowers. As the wine warms and breathes, a cardamon aroma and flavor emerge. The grass and green onion flavors, which you'll invariably taste in New Zealand SB, are conspicuously absent here. The wine has a medium-length, but crisp mineral-driven finish. I understand that some percentage of the wine was fermented in acacia wood and wonder if that wood could have imparted the cardamon flavor. I note that I also detected cardamon in a Bedrock Syrah. On the other hand, is it the use of native yeasts to ferment the wine that is responsible for the spice aroma and flavor? My musings aside, this is an outstanding SB and considerably better than the Bedrock cuvee, which is the California equivalent of a white Bordeaux. The flavor and finish do suffer the next day, so I wouldn't think of cellaring this beauty. (2131 views)

2012 Bedrock Wine Co. Sauvignon Blanc Kick Ranch

2012 Kick Ranch Sauvignon Blanc, This is the best year for this bottling since the inaugural 2009 (in my opinion). The highly aromatic and low-vigor site on the side of rocky hillside in Rincon Valley has created am exotic and aromatically beautiful wine. As in past years the wine was fermented entirely in barrel, with roughly 5% being new Acacia wood. The wine fermented with native yeasts into January and then was sulfured to prevent malolactic. The hope is to create richness from the increased oxidation of the barrel but also to preserve freshness from the reductiveness of the lees and the total lack of malolactic.

Varietal Character

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
