Tasted by wineton.mee on 12/28/2023 & rated 93 points: Excellent showing of the Pape clement tonight. No shortage of ash, smoke and voluminous red and black fruits. It has the strength and power of the 90, builds up to long long finish (821 views)
Tasted by Dibbs on 12/28/2023 & rated 95 points: Same bottle as Melvin. Perfect expressions of Graves, still drinking young. The first bottle I opened had a higher degree of elegance this one was missing but great showing nonetheless. (758 views)
Tasted by melvinyeowq on 12/26/2023 & rated 94 points: Boxing day at Caroline's: Easy guess as 1990 for the vintage, more learned Bordeaux drinkers managed to nail this as a Graves. Most vibrant out of the Bordeaux blends tonight, fresh strawberry and cherry fruit. Similar to my previous experience, this exhibited a lovely finesse. Best of the rest today. (1072 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 6/22/2023 flawed bottle: Corked, argh. (2070 views)
Tasted by Chrysostomus on 6/10/2023 & rated 95 points: Needs some air (somebody wrote here, that EVERY wine, even the old ones, needs 4 hours of air), this one was exactly in its sweet spot after a double decant and 4 hours "shoulder free" in the bottle. Then it was singing! (At opening and even after 2 hours it was still a little shy) Beautiful tertiary notes on the nose, like a walk in the forest. Forest floor, wet wood and mushrooms. Berries in the background, but still there. The same on the palate. Fresh, but even with a bit of sweetness that puts some pressure on the palate. Very classical. Very long. Glad to have 2 more... (1384 views)
Tasted by djhammond on 4/4/2023 & rated 94 points: Not quite up to its usual quality, this was carrying a very faint taint. However, that said, it was still highly enjoyable. (1540 views)
Tasted by edjBoca on 3/24/2023: Corked...bummer (1322 views)
Tasted by NoTrollingerPlease on 2/3/2023 & rated 94 points: 1990 Bordeaux plus X (Restaurant Brunnenstube, Beinstein): Tasted blind. Decanted for several hours. Clear deep tawny color. Beautiful fine, fruity nose with some blueberry, herbs and spices. Deep.
Beautiful fruit on the palate, dense and almost creamy. Nice tertiary flavors of tobacco, espresso and spices, some raw meat. Fine extract sweetness. Very long and fruity finish. In a wonderful spot right now. 93-94 (1954 views)
Tasted by CarpeDiem! on 1/21/2023 & rated 97 points: Beautifully matured Pessac, in its very long drinking window, with all the quality of an exceptional vintage. Complex nose, of cedar, vanilla, spices, chocolate. Elegant, well structured, with much finesse. Plum, ripe red fruit, liquorice, raisins, toffee, roast and menthol tones. These are all ingredients you can find in many good Bordeaux bottles, but the distinguishing factor here is the perfect blending of the components to perfect harmony. Exceptional! To be enjoyed for another five years at least. (1219 views)
Tasted by plitton on 12/13/2022 & rated 94 points: Larry and Nancy's 1990 Bordeaux Dinner (University Club, Chicago): Double decanted. Big, bold, robust. Drinking surprisingly young. WOTN. Drink now through 2033. (1397 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 12/9/2022 & rated 90 points: Birthday Celebration (Racquet Club - Chicago IL): Small glass. Very ripe and fleshy, this comes across as fully mature and starting to lose some energy, and while still good, I'd drink up soon. (2194 views)
Tasted by djhammond on 7/17/2022 & rated 96 points: An excellent wine, this is drinking at its peak, and for myself the best pre millennial Pape Clément by a distance. The flavour balance between the Cabernet and Merlot is impeccable with a deeply aromatic nose of black cherry, plum and tobacco with undertones of cedar. The palate is robust and perhaps not to some tastes, but it ticks every box with secondary and early tertiary characteristics. The finish is outstanding with great depth and pushing past 60 seconds. Scored slightly lower this time out but it is par for the course with 30+ year wines. An hour of decanting is beneficial. (1925 views)
Tasted by Jd6725 on 7/2/2022 & rated 94 points: Wonderful 4th of July tasting next to the 1989 Poyferre. This was a tad leaner and had slightly closed down fruit surprisingly. However there were some highs with this wine when it warmed up closer to room temp and eaten with Lamb. The 1986 two nights prior was a better/more complete wine but this was no slouch. (1519 views)
 Tasted by k H i L o on 5/22/2022 & rated 94 points: Bombesque ! Une valeur sûre... (1591 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 4/24/2022 & rated 94 points: 48x 1990 (37x Bdx, 6x Napa, 5x others): Pape Clement usually convinces in larger tastings as it is all about instant hedonistic pleasure and less about nuances which have to be unpacked and discovered over an evening. This 1990 was no exception. Peakish, beautifully mature, ripe fruit and a creamy texture. A crowd pleaser.

TN: Sexy mature nose, medium expressive, with ripe fruit, some leather and tobacco notes. Quite pleasant, missing a touch of intensity and precision. On the palate more exiciting with superb freshness, round but not melted tannins, nice creamy texture, no excess weight but not weightless either. The complexity is medium only with tobacco, leather, earth, ripe dark and brighter red fruit, minerality. Quite layered, well definied, drinking beautifully today and at its peak. The finish is rather on the shorter side, otherwise this would have been 95 pts.

Decanting: Quick double decant two+ hours prior to the tasting to remove sediment. It didn‘t need more than that. (2863 views)
Tasted by CarpeDiem! on 2/19/2022 & rated 95 points: Beautifully matured Pessac, in its long drinking window, with all the typical suprerior quality of this wonderful vintage. Complex nose, of cedar, vanilla, spices. Elegant, well structured, with much finesse. Plum, ripe red fruit, liquorice, raisins, toffee and subtle roast tones. Remarkable. (1442 views)
Tasted by Comte Flaneur on 10/14/2021 & rated 91 points: This wine has a strikingly alluring and seductive scorched earth nose, which lures you in, but it doesn’t quite deliver on the palate anymore like it used to ten years ago. It falls off a bit diagonally. I know because I devoured a case of this, fortuitously when it was its prime time drinking window of 2000-2015 - refer back to my note from 11 July 2015. On the night it was shown up in this regard by its Haut-Bailly flight mate, a more complete wine with more substance on the palate. Still pleasurable but drink up. (2097 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 10/14/2021 & rated 94 points: Po's 1990 Bordeaux Dinner (La Trompette, Chiswick): Classic Graves nose - warm earth, tobacco, smoke. Medium bodied, tobacco, earth, some underlying mainly red berry fruit, soft and harmonious, fresh acidity, finish is quite long. Lovely. (2175 views)
Tasted by NickA on 10/14/2021 & rated 94 points: Po's 1990 Bordeaux dinner (La Trompette): Although this wine wasn't hugely interesting on the palate, without particular complexity or definition, I just loved the nose, which variously offered musk, purple flowers, campfire, tobacco, pine needles, incense and something I noted down as 'sweet underbrush' that might actually not exist. An inner core of sweet, juicy red fruit and an attractive floral finish. My #3 tonight. (2123 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 10/14/2021 & rated 89 points: Po’s 1990 Bordeaux (La Trompette, London): Quite dense and savoury. Some licorice. Dark. Savoury. A little bitter in the middle. Opens and rounds with air but I preferred this a decade ago.*** (1933 views)
Tasted by Dibbs on 8/9/2021 & rated 97 points: Glorious wine! Hallelujah level of experience! I can’t add much more to it beyond what the previous tasters have described. See notes from DJHammond & Melvinyeowq (2425 views)
Tasted by melvinyeowq on 8/8/2021: 1990 Bordeaux: Classic Bordeaux, guessed Margaux because of the elegance behind the structured tannins. Lovely weight to it with dense and mature black fruit, this was less ripe, more tannic than many of the other 1990s I have tried, but still had a wonderful finesse to it. Apparently the tell-tale sign to wines from Graves is scorched earth on the finish which was definitely present here. Unfortunately this estate has turned to the dark side, a recent vintage I tried a couple years back was revolting. One of my favourite 1990s that I have tried. (2077 views)
Tasted by djhammond on 8/8/2021 & rated 97 points: Last tasted a year ago this just keeps getting better and is now outperforming some of the stars of the year, and is surely the best vintage from the estate drinking. Now displaying tertiary notes it is seamless and silky on the palate. The nose is deep with blackcurrant, black cherry and tobacco. The balance on the palate and finish is faultless with extraordinary layers of complexity but with a wonderful freshness. My previous observation about the finish being on the shorter side now has resolved and it subtlely pushes 60 seconds. A real cracker of a wine and highly recommended! (2125 views)
Tasted by Rani on 5/8/2021 & rated 92 points: Tasted blind. Ripe nose of purple fruit, bacon, earth notes. Very smooth, fat on the palate. Despite the hot vintage no real heat felt, but this is on the softer side. I’d say this is peaking. (2074 views)
Tasted by Grand Amateur on 3/14/2021 & rated 95 points: The great claret! So complex, smooth, very nice, mostly tertiary aromas, nearly no tannins left. Long. Not a blockbuster but very charming. (2158 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
