Community Tasting Notes (average 96.4 pts. and median of 96 pts. in 99 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by sdr on 12/15/2023 & rated 91 points: While the rest of the group chose this tonight as their favorite of the '91 LaLa trio, I demurred. It seemed a little blurry. Arguably too tannic for the fruit as well. Got better with air but a third place showing for me. (546 views)
Tasted by dream on 12/1/2023 & rated 98 points: This is a magnificent as well as powerful vintage of La Mouline that is showing so well now although there is further development ahead. Deep woodsy flavors of campfire char and smoked meats with still vibrant black fruits and great intensity and verve. The finish is a kaleidoscope of complexity with notes of warm asphalt and dark minerals. Really breathtaking and it may still improve from here! 98+ (602 views)
Tasted by MJReb on 4/16/2023 & rated 95 points: Chez JPL: spicy Syrah, with high density and power, well integrated tannins. Excellent! (897 views)
Tasted by Dionysos55 on 12/16/2022 & rated 98 points: Le meilleur vin bu cette année !!!!
(1025 views)
Tasted by jhngo on 5/11/2022 & rated 93 points: Rustic light and very tart. (1533 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 1/21/2022: An evening of Rhone (Ponte Vedre Club): Very excited to try this again as the first bottle that we had was a wow wine for me. I'll agree with the owner that this perhaps isn't quite at that same level, but I still think it's drinking really well. It jumps out of the glass, hint of feral, lots of lavender, lots of freshness, bits of darker fruits. Very enjoyable. (1902 views)
Tasted by bill00 on 6/5/2021 & rated 97 points: Excellent bottle that is in the zone. Smoky dark fruit. Really impressive super smooth texture. Powerful but refined and perfectly balanced. Had next to a bottle of '98 that was great but clearly outclassed by the '91. (2010 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 11/21/2020 & rated 95 points: Young but evolving. Two hour decant called for. 95-96 (2156 views)
Tasted by fclarity on 10/17/2020 & rated 97 points: From a perfect looking bottle, this wine had a deep red center and oranging rims. The high- intensity nose put forth cherries, minerals, roasted meat, roses, and tan spices.

In the mouth, this wine was rich and ripe with fine-grained, integrated tannin and solid acidity. It was gorgeously textured and came across like Grand Cru Burgundy except the flavor profile was different.

This wine was more refined and less "thick" that I recall my last bottle of this tasting. While it will easily last for ten years, it appeared to be in the zone and ready to drink. Enjoy! (2061 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 9/4/2020: Gaining weight with time, quite clear but lacking some structure. Resolved aged nose and almost transparent clarity. Didn’t really find the mineral profile. 93? (1777 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 9/4/2020 & rated 94 points: Slow oxed for 3 hours before decanting. Olives, smoke, currant and herbs. Elegant and ethereal palate. Good depth and weight but light on its feet. (1943 views)
Tasted by LB88 on 7/19/2020 & rated 95 points: For me the WOTN in great company of a 04 bonneau celestins and a 95 chave hermitage. Just beautifully integrated and sublime. (1431 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 5/27/2020 & rated 95 points: Heavier of dark spice and firm fruit. Floral notes and sweet spice had yet to emerge, but eventually would have on this bottle. '91 still needs a lot more time. 95-96 (1355 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 2/8/2020 flawed bottle: Acker Merrall Bicentennial Gala (Cipriani Wall Street - New York NY): Small glass, brief note. Fruit clearly stripped, I think this was ever-so-slightly corked. (2221 views)
Tasted by fclarity on 12/9/2019 & rated 98 points: Tasted blind, this wine had a red/purple center and light red rims. The high intensity nose blasted violets, chocolate, plums, roasted meat, and tan spices.

In the mouth, this wine was rich and ripe with firm acidity and outstanding length. It had a fine grained texture and made the wine feel three dimensional in my mouth.

This wine was coming into its drinking zone and was dramatic and great. It is unclear if it will get better but I wouldn't bet against it. It will also clearly perform, at least, at this level for a decade. A tour de force! (1572 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 10/18/2019 & rated 97 points: Annual Chicago winos visit - Champagne, White Burg, DRC, La La and SQN (Officina - Washington D.C.): Perfectly mature nose displaying subtle red fruit with a hint of blackfruit, strawberry, raspberry, a hint of dry cherry, sous bois, strong cedar, leather, matsutake, tapenade, roasted nuts and mineral. Fully resolved palate, very finely layered sweet red fruit, silky and polished, bright acidity and strong mineral, and a seamless subtle red fruit driven finish with soy and cedar at the end. It is the softest and most ready of the flight which leads me to guess La Turque. With air, it gains weight and becomes more youthful. (2451 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 10/18/2019 & rated 97 points: DC/Chicago Wine Dinner Extravaganza (Officina - Wasington, DC): In 1991 single blind La La horizontal...which I got 100% correct! Alluring aromas made me think there was the most Viognier influence here, which led me to think this La Mouline. Complex array of red black fruit with red cherry hints and even more complex spice. So much here with good+ power, very good length and exceptional finesse. My favorite of the horizontal. My wine of the night. (2855 views)
Tasted by fclarity on 9/14/2019 & rated 98 points: This wine had a deep red/purple center with oranging rims. The high intensity nose showed black cherries, cola, roasted meat, tan spices, and Cuban cigar.

In the mouth, this wine had incredible balance with awesome richness, acidity, and length. The tannins were light and round. It featured flavor intensity without weight. The tannins were barely noticeable and yet the wine was so rich it was almost "chewy".

This is drinking well now after 5+ hours in a decanter. However, there is still a slightly primary edge on top of all that flavor complexity. The only thing that holds it back from a perfect score for me is the slightly rustic nature of the flavors.

This will easily last 10+ years. Wow! (1543 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 9/14/2019 & rated 94 points: Roast meat. Ample fruit palate, seriously intense. Youngster. (1414 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 2/1/2019: La Tablee: Legends Dinner w E. Guigal & after party (Daniel & SommTime): Part of a horizontal of '91 LaLas. This is just a spectacular wine. I'd say it's not even really in the drinking window yet, although very tasty. Very pretty wine. Lots of animal and floral and there's this flavor right in the middle that I couldn't quite put my finger on but seemed to jump things up another level. Added an extra interest level. Really just beautiful. Love these. (2153 views)
Tasted by rlove on 12/23/2018 & rated 96 points: Oh the nose! Dark fruit, roast meat, lavender, and cedar all emerge from the glass, expressive and concentrated. Elegant palate, seemingly weightless, with fine tannins and still-fresh acidity. Finishes long and savory. The 1991 La Mouline is spellbinding. At its peak now but should hold for over a decade. Drink now through 2030. (1759 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 6/8/2018 & rated 95 points: World's Greatest, Hong Kong - Night II (Garden Suite, Peninsula Hotel): This is the second time in two months this awesome wine has been placed at the end of a marathon dinner, which is certainly a disservice to its detail and elegance. Pretty violets and red cherry but less of anything in the way of scorched earth. Palate is youthful and intense. A particularly lush bottle with dense blue and red berry. Delicious. Solid. (3181 views)
Tasted by Ducru@64 on 4/28/2018 & rated 96 points: Structurally complex. Started off passively with little vibes , but became explosive towards the end with rich cherries, berries . Superb wine with more than 30 seconds finish. (2012 views)
Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 4/7/2018 & rated 96 points: Classic La La. Powerful and nuanced at the same time. Lots of animal, meat, grilled notes, lamb, campfire and spices. This is a baby and still on it way up. Awesome wine. (2156 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 4/6/2018 & rated 95 points: Party at My Place: A particularly fresh and youthful bottle. This showing had more in the way of robust red and black berry fruit than smoked meat and earth (although as Kemo Sabe points out this could be due to the comparison to his '79 in the next glass), although these classic aromas were present to be sure. Whiffs of red rose petals. Youthful and intense but so much aromatic expression and complexity. Consistently great every time but have to imagine there is still sizeable upside on good bottles of this. (2491 views)

A FAMILY HISTORY
Land with 24 centuries of history behind it, worked and preserved by three generations of winemakers with family values at their core and a commitment to an illustrious terrain that produces prestigious wines. This, in a nutshell, is the Maison Guigal. Right from the beginning the motto, “No Pains No Gains” underpins the promise made to Etienne Guigal. A commitment to work together to follow in his footsteps, to communicate the family’s passion and create so many emotions. Today, Marcel and Philippe, along with their wives, are the guardians of this exceptional domain which combines history, devotion and a sense of togetherness. A breath of inspiration for generations to come.

CÔTE-RÔTIE
1
Planted on slopes by the Romans 24 centuries ago, this illustrious vineyard is made up of the Côte Brune, upstream of the Reynard and the Côte Blonde which is downstream. Planted almost exclusively with Syrah, the Côte Brune produces a powerful, intense wine. Thanks to a dash of Viognier which compliments the Syrah, the Côte Blonde is more subtle. There is a charming legend attached to this appellation and the Château d’Ampuis: “the sire of this place had two daughters, one with hair as dark as the night and the other blonde like a field of wheat. When they got married he endowed each with two of his best slopes. This is how we inherited the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde”

CONDRIEU
2
With its steep terraces which plunge towards the Rhône, this vineyard is planted solely with Viognier. A rare grape varietal imported by the Greeks at the beginning of our era, combined with granite soils its naturally complex character produces a unique white wine with a yellow golden hue and intense and subtle notes of delicate apricot and white peach.

SAINT-JOSEPH
3
Enjoyed at the table of kings, this illustrious wine’s name hails back to the 16th Century and the Jesuit monks of Tournon. The reds are made from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. These grape varieties grown on a South to South East facing steeply sloped vineyard with granite soils produce elegant, luscious wines.

HERMITAGE
4
A prestigious appellation since ancient times, it is named after a 13th Century hermit who sought redemption by devoting himself to prayer and the cultivation of vines. Enjoyed by the Russian Court and the great and the good of Europe, this rich and powerful wine with intense aromas is produced from Syrah for the reds and Marsanne and Roussanne for the whites.

CROZES-HERMITAGE
5
A typical wine of the northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage benefits from warm pebbly soils with good drainage. This is a vast appellation partially planted on slopes. The reds are produced from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. The red wine is deep ruby in colour, full of savoury flavour and well-balanced. The white wines are dry and aromatic with floral notes.

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
6
These soils are composed of calcareous round pebbles and the vineyards are swept by the Mistral winds and warmed by the Provencal sunshine, resulting in wines with unmistakable flavours of the South. These southern wines are produced from a complex blend of the 13 grape varieties of the appellation with Grenache as the main component. They are complex with soft and powerful tannins and are characterised by a generous and strong personality.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Côte-Rôtie

Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The Appellation cover three communes - Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône, Ampuis and Tupin-Semons - on the right Rhône river bank, within the Rhône "département".

• Soils : In the northern part of the vineyard, the Côte Brune, consists of extremely steep, terraced slopes of ferruginous mica schists which are covered with schist sand (arzel). The Côte Blonde has a varied geology with gneiss and granite predominating at the most southern side of the appellation.

• Climate : tempered continental. Dry, hot summers and frequent rainfalls during the other seasons. History : one of the oldest vineyards in France, first developed by the Romans. It is said that during the Middle Ages, "The Seigneur de Maugiron" bequeathed a hillside to each of his daughters, one was brunette and the other fair. Thus, were born the names of "Côte Brune" and "Côte Blonde".

• Area planted : 230 hectares (568 acres), for an annual production of 8,400 hectoliters (93,333 cases). Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2,3 US tons/acre).

• Grape Varieties : Syrah (80% minimum). An addition of up to 20% of Viognier grapes in the crop is allowed.
