Community Tasting Notes (average 90.2 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 71 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Benoit Hardy on 11/24/2023 & rated 91 points: “Ready to go” style nose which marks a mature Bordeaux: cigar, leather, undergrowth, plum and a little smoke.

Beautiful attack on the palate where the 25% Merlot acts as a shock absorber. It’s flattering on a black fruit with a nice grain on the palate. Then the cabernet takes over with a little pepper, spices, leather and dried herbs. Good balance but the acidity will have a little difficulty in relaunching the wine over the course of the tasting. Good finish on the undergrowth, dried leaves and discreet cedar on a correct length. The wine will still tend to decline towards the end.

Good Bordeaux but lacking breath in the second half of the mouth. (803 views)
Tasted by Mark van Delft on 7/9/2023 & rated 93 points: So fresh and young after 25 years, in a blind tasting the vintage was estimated at 2006 / 2013. Plum, prune, leather, soft oak, blackcurrant, smoke, soft coffee, medium plus body, fruity dry finish - 93. Q-crew Poell event V&F. (1096 views)
Tasted by Decanting Queen on 3/24/2023 & rated 93 points: Drinking very well although probably heading towards the other side of its peak. Smooth and integrated. Plenty of plummy fruit, spice and tobacco. (2188 views)
Tasted by Tao on 11/24/2022 & rated 92 points: Deep core of intense black cabernet fruits, dark ruby in colour, nose of dried herbs and occasionally, fresh mint, a hint of mineral spice, and a little smell of the sea, showing some sort of complexity. Rather smooth on the palate! (1530 views)
Tasted by Baron Slick on 11/13/2022 & rated 92 points: Savory and resolved, this retains an aura of power and concentration throughout. Lovely bouquet and flavors of black cherries, earth, forest floor, leather, and licorice. Shows impressive structure and composure, with very fine and understated tannins, and a refreshing streak of minerality. This is still drinking nicely. (926 views)
Tasted by n.rome on 1/31/2021 & rated 96 points: Spectacular. Loads of mushroom, earthiness and leather to pair with still present fruits. Tasted side by side with 2014 and the '98 was by far the favorite. An incredible experience that punched well above its weight. Still squarely in its window but would drink over the coming years, not sure how it could possibly get much better. (3169 views)
Tasted by Argrath on 3/16/2019 & rated 92 points: (Blind tasting)
Very Bdx. Quite expressive. Developed, spicy nose. Gently oaky. Ink, herbs, cigarre and some grassiness.
Medium-fullish palate. Medium, polished tannins. Quite generous fruit. Almost plummy. Good balance, gently oaky and a nice tobacco finish. (3966 views)
Tasted by mpdonnel on 3/6/2018 & rated 91 points: In a really good place. Nice deep dark red fruit, some tar and barnyard. Good balance and smooth fine tannins. I’m surprised at how youthful the wine is. (5632 views)

Tasted by Cipivts on 10/6/2017 & rated 91 points: Medium ruby garnet, nose is developping from the initial intense barnyard to a leathery, inky, tar, cigar leaf profile. Punchy acidity and tannins, feels much younger than it is, surprised by the freshness. Leather, ink, tar flavors, long finish. Very nice wine (5643 views)
Tasted by danckie on 9/22/2017 & rated 88 points: Not as good as the previous bottle. Fruit has dissapeared for the most part. Better on the second day. Probably bottle variation (4270 views)
 Tasted by NarunP on 9/9/2017 & rated 93 points: 65 % CS, 28 % M, 7 % PV

Bricked garnet, widened rim, but still a lot of youthful sign left.

Superb bouquet of classic mature Bordeaux claret. Complex expression of savory infused cassis, blueberry, dark cherry framed by notes of seabreeze, antique leather, violet, sage, and thyme.

Completely integrated. Smooth and silky mouthfeel. With just a touch of new oak still, this wine is really a result of perfect evolution. Balanced midpalate and finish very long on that enticing savory black fruit note.

Stored in Chateau's cellar for 21 years, removed, uncorked on site. Drank at a mille-pates party at the chateau prior to the marathon. 93. (3479 views)
Tasted by Tarpon222 on 8/26/2017 & rated 90 points: I'm not much of an old world wine drinker. It is impressive that a 19 year old wine shows a still beautiful color and a medium body of reasonable substance. Drank over 3 days (VacuVin) and it didn't change. I do miss FRUIT though!!!! (2841 views)
Tasted by danckie on 8/12/2017 & rated 92 points: This is in a truly happy place now. Great aged bordeaux. Ripe tannins, dark fruit, cedar and tobacco, mushrooms. Delicious. Imo there still a good number or years left. (2109 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 3/8/2017 & rated 93 points: Monthly Tasting Group HWS #117; Bordeaux St. Julien except Léoville wines.... (By VD and @ VD): Quite dark ruby red. The bouquet is a bit locked at first, but there are beautiful dark and red berries, some mint and barnyard. On the palate full bodied. Good dark and red forest fruit, some earth, very juicy, beautiful acidity, juicy and ripe tannin, some bell pepper, sweetness and licorice. Overall a full bodied and beautiful wine with a great promise for the future. This could well be one of the most promising left bank wines of the vintage. Still in its young maturity stage. (2793 views)
Tasted by NarunP on 2/4/2017 & rated 91 points: A St Julien kind of Saturday! Lagrange is such a great chateau churning out consistent wine year after year. This 1998 exemplifies this reputation. Despite rated as a mediocre year, this bottle has aged beautifully. Popped and poured. It showed seductively aromatic notes of red currant, leather, and dried mushroom. The palate is well evolved with dried cherry, cassis, cedar, with a hint of wet tobacco. Soft tannin. Very pleasant to drink indeed. Perfect for a beautiful winter day in New York City (2163 views)
Tasted by NiklasT on 12/30/2016 & rated 87 points: Fully mature, to me a bit spoiled by too much brett, others enjoyed it more. Thin but present fruit, reasonably long. (2170 views)
Tasted by dissler on 10/9/2016 & rated 95 points: The wines of this chateau ages well. There are oxidation notes present - typical dried fruits, raisin - but they only add to the taste and not consume it. The wine holds really well together, very well preserved. Gives it a taste only proper aging can bring. (2624 views)
Tasted by figged on 7/28/2016 & rated 91 points: Removed from cellar, opened and decanted straight away 1pm. Fine sediment staining around the collar of bottle as to be expected at almost 18 years old. Tasted bright, no oxidisation at all, Ruby, slight signs of ageing around edge. Excellent legs. Left to open up and started drinking at 8pm with a ribeye. Lovely dark fruit, complex and delicious. I had opened a bottle about 5 years ago and was disappointed as was too young, this was perfect, wish I had more. (2751 views)
Tasted by HavardB on 5/5/2016 & rated 95 points: Very lively, still surprisingly fresh, full bodied, complex, good balance, nice layers, blackcurrant, cedar wood, some liquorice, some eucalyptus, some very ripe strawberries and a bit earthy. Hint of tobacco? Great match for a roasted duck breast with forest mushrooms and green beans. (2653 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 6/22/2015 & rated 90 points: Weekly tasting group #172; Bordeaux 1998 (@ VD): The bouquet is not extremely expressive, but there are dark forest fruits, some chocolate and not unpleasant bell pepper impressions. On the palate a concentrated wine with dark and red berry fruits, earth, pepper, green bell pepper, chocolate, green herbs, good acidity, fairly soft tannin and good bitterness in the finish. Overall a fairly full bodied, firm and juicy wine. Maybe lacking a bit in real finesse at the moment. For tonight 90+, but it might improve…. See also my previous notes. (4596 views)
Tasted by stayhappy21 on 12/22/2014 & rated 92 points: Drank this wine today at Gattopardo with my best mate from University.

Colour is reddish purple. Some cassis, liquorice and oak on the nose, with a good balance of elegance, laden with grace, beauty and charm.

At 16 years of age, this wine still feels young and fresh, with the acidity showing nicely after an hour. The purity of fruit is outstanding, with the tannins nicely dissolved to give it a very rounded and elegant finish.

An excellent choice to pair with the turkey and cheese that we had. (4379 views)
Tasted by FransS on 12/17/2014 & rated 84 points: This wine didn't convince me, modest in every aspect (3917 views)
Tasted by zut alors! on 12/7/2014 & rated 87 points: A little disappointing. Almost at the end of its 'drinkability' range and it showed last night. A nice blend of cab sauv and merlot (50% each), typical of St. Julien, but not copmplex or distinctive. Would be a great mid-week wine, but not at the weekend wine price I paid 14 years ago. (3520 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 9/8/2014: Some moss, cedar and sweet tobacco on the nose at first. It is just a little muddled and lacks real definition but gets better in the glass. There are some cassis fruits, a little smoke and tar, fresh roses and some wet earth flavours. Length of flavour is moderate. I enjoyed this more than the 98 Pontet-Canet. (4083 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Julien

VdB

Read more detailed information on St. Julien and its wines The seventeenth century pioneers Traces are to be found of a Saint-Julien de Rintrac, perhaps Saint-Julien's earliest name, as from the thirteenth century. But we have to wait until the seventeenth century pioneers, urban and rural aristocrats, discover the exceptional merits of these terroirs.
Traces of this system still exist today in the structure of estates within the appellation: by the side of the two villages of Beychevelle and Saint-Julien, the large estates are heavily preponderant, representing more than four fifths of the total surface of vineyards.

The terrain is practically identical over all the commune. Only the proximity of the estuary, sometimes close, sometimes further away, can cause slight variations in climate. In fact, Saint-Julien-Beychevelle's layer of gravel takes the form of a huge rectangle over 3 miles long and 2 miles wide. And the alluvial deposits are particularly well fragmented into ridges of Garonne gravel of the early Quaternary. Accordingly, the vines are safeguarded from stagnant water.

The wines from the Saint-Julien appellation may be recognized by their unparalleled bouquet, particularly harmonious and mild. They have a fine deep colour and combine the finesse of their aromas and a solid constitution. They have body, are very rich in flavour and have a delicious and delicate bouquet.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)
In order to have the right to the Saint-Julien appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:

- come from the commune of Saint-Julien and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cussac, and Saint-Laurent, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions: grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
