Community Tasting Notes (average 91.2 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 52 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Nanda on 8/22/2022 & rated 93 points: In a perfect spot with layers of complexity (slate, mature orchard fruit, sea breeze, spice) complemented by still-fresh fruit and zippy acidity. White WOTN. (985 views)
Tasted by Tony Ling on 5/2/2020 & rated 93 points: PNP into Zalto Burgundy glass (“Fruit” day): Medium golden to the eyes.

“Cool-breeze” sense of reduction notes upfront. This is more towards riper yellow and orchard fruits, hints of exotic fruits like pineapples that might come from the botrytis influence. Dash of white peppers. Some mushroom like notes that makes this all the more interesting.

This is a different profile from the 1997 Montée de Tonnerre tried just a while ago, this is arguably less structured and more ready to be consumed.

Still, 93-94 points for me easily.

1 hour upon opening, second pour, 4/5 left: Freshly baked bread and yeast. Butterscotch and hay. Very nice.

3 hours upon opening, 1/3 left: More complete on the palate now but a little bittersweet on the finish. (1419 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 5/29/2019: Approaching maturity, creamy with notes of cheese, citronella and wet rock. Very distinctive, round and smooth now, soft edges. Great wine. (1619 views)
Tasted by FYC on 5/16/2019: A bit of honey and ripe fruit on the nose. Almost like botrytis. However, on the palate there is good acidity with some waxy round texture. Very full but not flabby. A wonderful wine to start the day. (1625 views)
Tasted by paul195 on 3/20/2019 & rated 94 points: The 4th of 6. The bottle was just singing. Palate even more focused than my last bottle, with rich yellow fruits laced with hints of citrus. Modest acidity, less minerality and chalkiness than the 2000 or 2002. This bottle had a lanolin like texture, which I normally associate with Mersault not Chablis, which coated the fruit and offered a lush, silky, long finish. Certainly an opulent Chablis. (1642 views)
Tasted by Ms. Bubblehead on 2/3/2019: The bottle was in very good condition. Raveneau's distinctive herbs, honey, minerals, white flowers, and stony fruits, on the palate, acidity was crisp and lingering, mint, strong minerals, light Canadian honey, and modest spices. Long lingering finish. (1529 views)
Tasted by Ms. Bubblehead on 10/12/2018: The third bottle we had this year, in good condition. Honey baked almond, citrus pie, good minerality yet with more fruits, on the palate, it has mix of stony and yellow citrus fruits, modest spices, and sea salt minerated orange peel . Butteaux is on left bank of Chablis, soil not as chalky underlying, leading to modest more richness in flavour. (1110 views)
Tasted by Ms. Bubblehead on 7/29/2018: It was more mature than the previous bottles we had, almost felt that it is at peak of its stage. On the nose, yellow fruits, chalky, sea salt, citrus jam, on the palate, acidity, saltiness, and generous tropical fruits came at the same time, quite deep and with good structure (1013 views)
Tasted by Ms. Bubblehead on 4/28/2018: 2001 Raveneau Butteaux (southwest Chablis)
Honey, mint, white flowers on the nose, quite subtle, on palate, slightly more power was shown than the nose, decent amount of yellow fruits, minerality, modest saltines. It might seem to be a bit more fruitier than other Raveneau we tried, but I think this was due to the age and vintage. In my view, younger Raveneau typically showed a lot more sharper and complex minerality and acidity, the palate got more subtle, floral, frutier later on. They did a good job for this vintage. (1255 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 4/22/2018 & rated 90 points: The wine is fat and ripe with lots of tropical fruit and pineapple. The density of the prem cru is there, but it is a bit too ripe which is not surprisingly for the vintage. The raveneau minerality is missing in this bottle. Drink up. (1053 views)
Tasted by paul195 on 5/21/2017 & rated 93 points: First Growth Bordeaux 1978, 1979, 1981 (The Lot): Crisp, fresh, chalky, layers of bright citrus fruit -- a textbook Chablis at mid-maturity. (1896 views)
Tasted by beatles on 1/11/2017 & rated 92 points: Extremely fresh and young showing, this has all the fixers in terms of a creamy texture, mineral undertone, a bright, citrus-like acidity - and a good lenght. Not extremely concentrated, rather light and elegant. #With PB@Anarki (1456 views)
Tasted by Vstalam on 2/27/2016 & rated 90 points: Out of Coravined bottle.

Fat, buttery, and rich honeyed Apple notes. Felt more like a traditional white burgundy than Chablis, but paired well with sole. (1814 views)
Tasted by paul195 on 8/20/2015 & rated 93 points: 2001 Burgundies (Brooklyn Wine Exchange (BWe)): Great color and clarity. Crisp, lively, nice structure and fruit. Classic Chablis, great maker delicious wine (2611 views)
Tasted by BurgAndy on 8/16/2015: Decanted two hours before tasting. Medium dark yellow in the glass. Yellow fruit, petrol nose. On the palate -- white and predominantly yellow stone fruit, saline and stone, requisite acid, hints of sherry and honey on the finish. Well-balanced. Grand Cru burg experience in spite of its premier cru terroir. Last bottle of the lot, caught at its peak.

Almost comical that the purchase price was $35 in 2009. (2185 views)
Tasted by paul195 on 8/8/2015 & rated 93 points: In a great place, classic Chablis minerality. See prior note for details (1763 views)
Tasted by paul195 on 7/10/2015 & rated 93 points: Lively nose of bright lemony fruit and chalky limestone. Very lean, linear structure with good acidity. Finishes quite complex with lots of mineral and spice notes. This is a delicious white burgundy that is in a great place. '01 seems to be a vintage that reinforces its classic Chablis qualities, where the '00 and '02 are so much fatter and rounder style. (1672 views)
Tasted by tooch on 1/3/2015 flawed bottle: Holiday Dinner at Nathan's (Nathan's House - Chicago, IL): Some at dinner thought this was corked, but those aromas seemed to go away with time. To me, the palate was a bit tired. It had some of those waxy notes you're always hoping you don't run into with white burgundies and I'm afraid that what we had here was a oxidative Raveneau. It's a shame....I've ran into more and more oxidative wines from Raveneau over the past year than in years past. Boo. (2783 views)
(1949 views)
Tasted by AlScott on 12/30/2013 & rated 88 points: Felt slightly blowsy compared to previous bottles, lost quite a bit of the acid line - I hope a poorly stored bottle. (2229 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 11/19/2013 & rated 90 points: Rotating Dinner Series-Wines Jimmy Likes (Acadia, Chicago IL): Nose: There is a waxiness that strikes right away along with brioche, red apples, crushed rocks, and peaches. The nose was a bit on the advanced side as this was lacking some gun flint, but it was also very well balanced.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium acidity. The feel is well balanced with wax, brioche, red apples, and some crushed rocks. There is nice layering, but it is lacking a crispness to it.

Overall: This wasn't premox'd, but it was on the slightly advanced side. It was still very enjoyable to drink as was, but this was showing some more wear than one would expect from a chablis of this age. (3069 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 5/24/2013 flawed bottle: Birthday Celebration (Chicago, IL): An odd bottle with a reasonable aromatic start but showing little fruit on palate and a bitter finish. (3371 views)
Tasted by AlScott on 11/27/2012 & rated 93 points: Taken to specialist white Burgundy lunch and stood up very well vs heavyweight competition. Not sure if much more to come but good weight, nice acid and loads of citric/shellfish touches and a touch of chalk, lovely length and kept devloping. (2725 views)
Tasted by BurgAndy on 7/24/2012: Spectacular. Pale yellow/gold. Nose was initially exotic with aromas of tropical fruit and pineapple. With some time and air, the nose became more focused and chiseled -- minerals, citrus, and white stone fruits. Impressive flavors of pear, apple, tart melon, some citrus pith, yellow plum pit, and rocks on the palate. Huge midpalate and a finish that never ended. Threw a lot of sediment. Crazy powerful and painfully intense. Youthful. Really surprised by how this showed -- prior bottles were a bit tame, this one showed just why Raveneau chablis can be in a class of its own. Drank over three hours. (2678 views)
Tasted by tooch on 7/21/2012 & rated 92 points: Dinner at Restaurant Zoe (Restaurant Zoe - Seattle, WA): Just kept getting better with time...sadly, we just couldn't keep our hands off of it! Nose was shy at first, but soon developed beautiful flint, tidal pool, and pear tones. The flavors were deep and dense - the pear and seashell tone really dominated the palate. With air, it seemed to gained weight. Really good stuff. (3150 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Chablis

Chablis (Fédération de Défense de l'Appellation Chablis) | Chablis (Burgundy Wines)

2014 Vintage Notes:
"... a hybrid of 2004/2007 and 2010. The stone, citrus and limestone amalgam is exactly what we search for in Chablis as the style harkens to a day in the Cote de Beaune proper (1960's - 1980's) when wine was not meant to be consumed the week it was released, battonage was not used by all and new oak was rarely seen ... the texture is natural and 'of the vintage' not 'of the winemaker' .... Like Sancerre or the Loire in general, 2014 in Chablis is one of those rare years with extract and transparency. It appears to be a vintage for the "neoclassic" ages and those of us intent on cellaring the most terroir-driven (but still powerful) examples of vineyard, site-place and varietal will want to invest (heavily) in the magnetic and electric 2014's." - Jon Rimmerman

2018 Vintage Notes:
"There’s not that razor sharp Chablis acidity in 2018,” says Patrick Piuze. “But there is good definition of place. The dry conditions drove vines to drink deeper down in the soil profile."
