Community Tasting Notes (average 89.1 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 296 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Juicyfuit on 2/17/2024: PnP and drank throughout the day. On the nose - dried fruit, bitter herbs, and slightly musty. On the palate - plum, dried herb, leather. Nice molasses-like sweetness. Soft, smooth tannins; however the body felt out of balance. (755 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 1/31/2024: Tonight’s bottle restores my faith in this wine; the previous bottle showed aged/raisined fruit, but tonight we are back on the beam. With all due respect to the much lauded 2006, this has long been my favorite Produttori normale, and both my wife and I really enjoyed this paired up with fresh bread and cheese, not to mention a little pesto from Claudio’s 🍷👍 (1015 views)
Tasted by 5laton on 10/14/2023: Opened several hours early; double-decanted for sediment about an hour before tasting. Attractive dried floral nose with some mature notes of beef bouillon and a hint of soy. Really lovely medium plus bodied palate with flavors that follow the nose. Easily the star of our lineup today. This sat in a wide bodied glass for several hours and became more mature tasting yet stern over time, so take care not to over-decant unless you have some animal fat on your plate. Not sure where this stands with respect to the peak, but it seems open for business with the aforementioned caveat. (1226 views)
Tasted by ct4ldr on 10/2/2023 & rated 60 points: Past peak (1388 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 8/7/2023: No great wines, just great bottles, right?

I'm drinking this with the 2010 tonight - I had this exact pairing last year and had a clear preference for this wine (and even remarked in my previous note about the wine's continued ability to age), but tonight this bottle has a prune note on the nose that is distracting. Not to the point of maderization, but if this was your only bottle, a worrisome development. It's actually pretty delicious on the palate, but today it's finishing a clear second to the 2010, which is the exact reverse of my opinion last year when I had these two wines. (1339 views)
Tasted by Ksprbk on 7/27/2023 & rated 94 points: Still going strong. Drank straight from opening and delivered right away. No signs of going downhill the next couple of years. Impressive from an entry barbaresco. (1102 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 3/29/2023: As we approach this wine's 20th birthday, no signs whatsoever of any fatigue. Gorgeous red fruit & menthol on the nose, tart red fruit and good acidity on the palate and just a pleasure to drink. (1388 views)
Tasted by cjtst11 on 1/1/2023 & rated 90 points: Beautiful with truffle cacio e pepe. Drinking well now. (1366 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 12/4/2022 & rated 91 points: I’m a fan. Drinking beautifully. Opened 6 hours in advance. Very classic rose, red fruit and mild tar nose. Light bodied yet full of flavor. Impactful yet not overly complex. Would be a great example for a Barbaresco 101 class. Great dinner wine with porcini risotto. (91) (1453 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 11/24/2022 & rated 91 points: Classic bouquet of roses and tar. Medium to light weight on the palate. Secondary and tertiary flavors, but not very vibrant. Balanced wine. (1191 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 8/6/2022: Red fruits, rose petals & tar on the nose. Good acidity on the palate, tart red fruit - very likable, and similar in terms of aging profile with my previous note in April, '21. If you have this in the cellar and haven't tried it recently, do yourself a favor and check out a bottle. (1678 views)
Tasted by Aztec94 on 4/3/2022 & rated 90 points: A terrific wine with food, a bit flat without it. On its own, the fruit is subtle and faint, with more herbal and tertiary notes. With food (in this case a pork loin) some nice cherry and red fruit mid palate came through before giving away to the more herbal notes. (1733 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 1/28/2022 & rated 91 points: Aged gracefully. Solid acidity and structure with softened fruit. Flavors do not have focus anymore, but still pleasant wine. (1694 views)
Tasted by Phylloxera63 on 10/29/2021 & rated 89 points: Lively color with serious bricking. Great classic nose of tar and earth. Nice acidity gives it lift as well as digestability. Time to drink up, though, as its tannins are slightly drying out. (1891 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 4/16/2021: Off this bottle, I think the wine is now sitting squarely on it's plateau of maturity. No longer drinking young, but with plenty of time in front of it as well. Good acidity to provide some lift on the palate, nice persistence, with some tertiary notes starting to show on the nose. I know I've said this before, but you really wonder how Produttori is able to stuff so much wine enjoyment into such a modestly priced bottle. This is probably the red wine analog of Pepiere's Clos des Briords in that regard. (2497 views)
Tasted by Chocman on 4/10/2021 & rated 91 points: Chewy with a long finish. Best if decanted. (2064 views)
Tasted by FjordogFjell on 3/13/2021 & rated 91 points: Litt ester ala belgisk øl og tranebær på nesen. Rein klar frukt. Taper selge noe etter noen timer i åpen flaske. Klart bedre og mer vital enn 2005. 1 dag i flaske: flott frukt med tobakk og appelsin sammen med relativt ferd morell (2056 views)
Tasted by Phylloxera63 on 12/18/2020 & rated 91 points: This has developed nicely over the years. It has shed its tannic clout and has turned into a mellow wine of contemplation. Starts to get a browny rim although retaining a certain amount of freshness thanks to nice acidity. All components have created a cohesion one could only hope for. Great stuff to accompany food with earthy flavours such as a mushroom risotto or to savour on its own by the fireside. (2026 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 10/8/2020: I haven't tried this in a couple years. Gorgeous nose, with ripe cherry fruit, tar & menthol.

Light-bodied on the palate, tannins mostly resolved at this point, good acidity & persistence. 15+ years after the vintage and really in the zone - when you think about the purchase price, hard to fathom how they put this level of quality in the bottle. (2208 views)
Tasted by RunarN on 8/1/2020 & rated 91 points: Very nice, great vintage (1847 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 3/28/2020: Showed a bit pruny at first, disjointed and hot. Harmonized after an hour (no decanting) but is, and this shouldn’t be a surprise, way too young. I suspect it will never be a great wine, but it’s a good wine that couldn’t be mistaken for anything other than quality young northern Italian Nebbiolo. (2880 views)
Tasted by drrobvino on 2/15/2020 & rated 90 points: 3rd of 3 bottles. This wine was in perfect condition, but on the slow decline. Stewed tomato, tart red cherries, menthol, beautifully integrated and mature. (2080 views)
Tasted by KriLis on 6/21/2019 & rated 90 points: Light, spicy. Reddish brown color. Long finish. Quite some tannins left (2745 views)
Tasted by FjordogFjell on 5/29/2019 & rated 91 points: Passe moden. ,lukt av tjære og kjeller rett etter åpning. Overaskende fersk frukt gule kirsebær.
Tilgjengelig. Nypekonsentrat, (2615 views)
Tasted by Ian S on 3/9/2019: A bit ho-hum, lacking any great perfume and having quite a simple cherry-led palate with some mushroom emerging. Tannins still of decent intensity and nicely refreshing acidity, however I'm not convinced that the fruit is going to last the course.

Based on the EUR20 price at the time, it's decent enough value, but I do expect a little more from even the standard bottling. (2774 views)

Rockss and Fruit (1/12/2008)
(Produttori de Barbaresco) This had a potent but slightly unfocused nose of tar, leather, cherries and earth. The palate was so forward for such a young Barbaresco from this estate. Still there was nice acid a great clarity to the wine. Powerful and concentrated but in a very accessible way.

2004 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco

The 2004 season has been a "smooth" one for the grapes of Barbaresco, neither too hot or to cold, with average spring rainfall and a relatively dry summer. After the awkward 2002 and 2003 vintages (being the 2002 season very wet and the 2003 very hot and dry) the 2004 was "uneventful" and easy, with nice flowering and fruit - set and therefore resulting in a larger than average crop. Because of that, growers have been very careful all through the summer with severe thinning of the crop in order to have, at the beginning of September a fairly balanced production in the vineyards.

The once again beautiful September weather, warm days and cool nights, allowed a nice ripening of the colour and aromatic compounds, as well as a good sugar accumulation. Harvest started late for the Produttori del Barbaresco, on October 8th with healthy grapes and very good figures. Ratio between skins and juice was more in favour of the latter, which sometimes means a "diluted" vintage: the high level of sugar, colour and fenolic compounds, though, were a good indication of excellent quality. Rain come after October 20th with 80% of the crop already in; nevertheless even the grapes picked after the rain showed good numbers, a proof of the healthy character of the crop itself. 2004 vintage will be a very good one; like most of the late harvesting vintages will show intense flavours and rich fruit; maybe not as tight and tannic as the low producing vintages of 1999 and 2001; more similar to the rich and powerful 1990.

Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco

Producer
Prior to 1894, Nebbiolo grapes were sold to make Barolo wine or simply labeled ”Nebbiolo di Barbaresco”. But in 1894, Domizio Cavazza, headmaster of the Royal Enological School of Alba and a Barbaresco resident, created the first cooperative, the ”Cantine Sociali”, by gathering together nine Barbaresco vineyard owners to make wine in the local castle that he owned. Cavazza understood that there were differences between Nebbiolo grapes grown in the Barolo district versus the same grapes grown in the Barbaresco district and, for the first time, recognized it on the wine label. The ”Cantine Sociali” was forced to close in the 1920’S because of fascist economic rules. In 1958, the priest of the village of Barbaresco, recognizing that the only way the small properties could survive was by joining their efforts, gathered together nineteen small growers and founded the Produttori del Barbaresco. The first three vintages were made in the church basement, and then in the winery built across the square from where the Produttori is still located. United once again, the small growers continued the work started by Domizio Cavazza, producing only Barbaresco wine and enhancing both the reputation of the wine and the village. The proud past of Barbaresco and the dedication of its creators have made the Produttori one of the greatest producers in a great wine-producing area; it... ”continues to set some of the highest standards of wine making for any cooperative in the world”. (Robert M. Parker, Jr.; The Wine Advocate, 2-28-90). The Produttori del Barbaresco, founded in 1958, now has 56 members and 100 hectares (250 acres) of Nebbiolo vineyards in the Barbaresco appellation, which amounts to almost 1/6 of the vineyards of the area. Each family is in full control of its land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with centuries old skill and dedication. The winery produces a Barbaresco D.O.C.G., a blend of Nebbiolo grapes harvested from different vineyards, and a simpler Nebbiolo Langhe suited for earlier consumption. In great vintages, nine single-vineyard Barbarescos are produced from nine classic premium sites within the Barbaresco village boundaries: Asili, Rabaja, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Paje, Montefico, Moccagatta and Rio Sordo. These are the geographical names of sites where Nebbiolo grapes have always been cultivated. The names of the single-vineyards, the total number of bottles produced, and the name of the owners of the vineyards are marked on the labels. The Produttori del Barbaresco, which vinifies only Nebbiolo grapes, produces around 420,000 bottles (35,000 cases) per year. In a good vintage they are divided among Barbaresco (40%), single vineyard Barbarescos (40%) and Nebbiolo Langhe (20%). Produttori del Barbaresco s.a.c.

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
