Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 87.7 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 29 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by djhammond on 6/1/2021 & rated 89 points: This still needs decanting to open up, but it probably is not going to further improve. It is a good solid and enjoyable wine. (1362 views)
Tasted by jmottern on 1/14/2020 & rated 89 points: Very long time to open. Medium body red. Fruit was good but not as robust as I remembered from France. But then that was France. (1453 views)
Tasted by Kiwi5709 on 6/15/2018 & rated 89 points: Brilliant. Much better than the previous bottle. Decanted for > 2 hours. Opened exceptionally with round nose & taste. Improvement unlikely. (1947 views)
Tasted by Kiwi5709 on 5/20/2017 & rated 86 points: Decantered > 2 hours. Terracotta brown colour. Marginal bouquet or taste development over the 2 hours. Will not improve. Drink ASAP. (2400 views)
Tasted by jmottern on 4/2/2016 & rated 90 points: Deep dark red wine. Very closed at bottle opening with fruit not showing until a hour after. Wine paired nicely with duck. Overall a disappointment compared to my introduction several years ago in Normandy. (3477 views)
Tasted by OW_SOSPEL on 10/11/2015 & rated 92 points: Belle couleur grenat profond, ocelle framboise, brillant, lourd, larmes fines, rapides et fréquentes.
(3041 views)
Tasted by jmottern on 12/22/2014 & rated 90 points: I enjoyed this wine in Normandy 2 years ago and was looking forward to drinking it again. The wine was good both times but this time not as good as I remembered; possibly due to food pairing.

The bottle opened with a very nice nose. The fruit presented notes of "woody" blackberry, some cherry and was slightly dry. The finish was forward in my mouth and lingered much longer than other red wines. I thought this was interesting. This wine probably needs several more years to approach its prime drinking window. It should be decanted before drinking. (3429 views)
Tasted by Backdoctor on 8/17/2014 & rated 89 points: still could benefit from some aging but after a vinturi and some time it settled down and was very good. (3294 views)
Tasted by peterchoy on 10/2/2013 & rated 87 points: Appearance: Bright and clear, this wine is of deep ruby color, with legs.
Nose: Clean, the nose shows medium (-) intensity aromas of black fruit such as blackcurrant, dark plum and blackberry, oak notes of cedar, kernel notes of mocha, mineral notes of earth, herbaceous notes of blackcurrant leaf. The wine is youthful.
Palate: Dry with medium acidity, medium tannin of ripe and integrated texture, the wine has medium alcohol and is of medium (+) body with medium intensity flavors of black fruit such as blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherries, oak notes of cedar, kernel notes of mocha. The wine has a medium (-) finish.
Conclusion: Acceptable quality Pessac-Leognan with a nose lacking concentration and fairly simple, the wine is showing a bit of unripe characters. On the palate it shows balance and reasonable intensity, but not having much length. Overall a wine that is not of much interest. Ready to drink now and not suitable for further ageing. (3577 views)
Tasted by zmilan on 4/27/2013 & rated 89 points: Medium body , smooth, elegant , black cherry fruit comes through, nicely balanced . (2602 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 12/6/2011 & rated 85 points: No intensity on the nose. Palate shows some ink, licorice and spice in a medium bodied whole, with oak not integrated - vanilla stands out like an artificial flavoring. Lacks concentration, alcohol is warm, tannins are coarse and mid palate is hollow. Length is rather short. Moreover I could not sense any Pessac typicity. (3326 views)
Tasted by Frommen on 10/2/2011 & rated 90 points: Yes its slighty hollow and yes it wont probably age for decades, but today it really delivers.Tobacco, coffee and dark cherry fruit dominates. Great Bordeaux feel for a song. Must.get.more. (2901 views)
Tasted by Sundbyberg on 3/30/2011 & rated 82 points: My first really big wine experience was drinking a 1995 Carboniux in 2006. 2007 was a challenging year and this producer did not do very well, in my eyes.
This wine was very ligth, did not taste much, and there were no tannins present, so I do not see this vintage of Carboniux going anywhere. (2213 views)
Tasted by Blackland on 3/19/2011 & rated 84 points: A light well balance wine. A little fruit and earth, easy to drink. (2463 views)
Tasted by Jona on 1/27/2011 & rated 85 points: A very light version of Bordeaux with an anonymous nose and a fresh mouth feel. Not really how I like them actually but it was well balanced wine with good freshness.85-86 p. (2336 views)
Tasted by sball on 10/23/2010 & rated 85 points: Black ruby appearance, candied cherry and floral notes, good fruit up front on the palate and refined tannins. A gentle wine. (2352 views)
Tasted by greg533 on 12/4/2009: tres vanillé et boisé, pas très interessant (318 views)

It is said that in the 18th century this wine was introduced to the Sultan of Constantinople’s palace because of its clarity and was called “mineral water from Carbonnieux”, thus defying the Islamic law.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
